Dragon Ball Dissection concludes its look at the original 13 DBZ films. There's a hero trapped in a music box, and he's the coolest thing ever. Or at least Trunks thinks so! What does Goku have to do with this? Less than the title would suggest.

Actually fun fact about that near identical younger brother? You know how you mentioned his similarity to Link? Well guess what, his voice actress, Matsumoto Sachi, would not only pop up in the _other_ N64 Zelda game as Skull Kid, but would actually end up playing Link himself in Wind Waker, and since that's technically a different Link from the usual child Link incarnations (Bless the art style shift) she's technically still playing the role... assuming they're not just using stock audio anyway.

12:31 I think the reason why Trunks is so trusting of Tapion despite him being so rude to him could be because Trunks is used to getting the somewhat similar treatment from Vegeta. Maybe. I don't know, maybe I'm putting too much thought into it, or not enough.

A very poetic end for the DBZ movies. What better way to go out then to sum up the last arc we just watched? Goku in the background while other characters get developed for most of the time and coming in at the very end to steal everyone's thunder to save the day. Good job movie 13, good job.

I haven't seen this movie before, so it came as something of a surprise to hear that Videl gave someone the LowTierGod speech. That said, I wish Great Saiyaman 2 was canon to the manga as opposed to Videl just being a house-wife. It would've been a nice way to show that the events of the Buu Arc did at least take her in a different positive direction.

24:28 I've always had a theory regarding Vegeta's absence for most of the movie. I don't know enough real-life details to know how plausible actually is. After movie 12, it's clear that Toei completely bought what Toriyama (through Piccolo) said just before Vegeta's sacrifice that he would be gone for good. In movie 12, it's made obvious that Vegeta is only coming back because of the Janemba chaos, and he disappears again when everything is solved. Probably manga readers were expecting Vegeta to come back at some moment, but it seems Toei believed what Piccolo said. I think movie 13 was developed according to what Toei thought was the most likely outcome after the Buu arc: that everything would return to normal and almost everyone would return to life, but Vegeta wouldn't. Thus, they didn't include Vegeta in the movie. However, eventually Toriyama brought Vegeta back to life. I suppose these movies take some development time, and Vegeta's manga revival happened when the movie was too far in development to make major changes. All Toei could do was to add a single extra scene where Vegeta appeared, to avoid people wondering where he was. Again, I don't know how plausible this is.

Very. if this movie comes out about a month and a half after the manga ends, that means Vegeta's revival (Chapter 514 of 519) would have been all of 5 weeks before the end of the manga. - The staff would only have had around 2.5 months to sort the situation out. Not nearly enough time to write a new draft, but plenty of time to slip a single scene that adds nothing into the movie. Just make it pretty and you're good to go.

Man, the theme song for this film rocks. I love it so much! Anyhow, I think most of the "wait, what's the intention here?" stuff is just down to this being like, 90 minutes' worth of movie in 50 minutes. Sure, Bulma's artificial box-room (sure, this is a wild cartoon universe where magic and sci-fi blur into each other) was *meant* to make you think it'll work, but we don't have time to show multiple days where it does at first and then it doesn't. Videl's *meant* to be just generally grumpy at Hoi at first and slowly start feeling the adventure, but we don't have time to do more than suddenly cut to her being excited. ...speaking of Videl, maaaaaan do I prefer her snappy characterisation and "on the same wavelength of goofy cosplay fun" relationship with Gohan than her weird depressing transformation into a meek housewife in modern Dragon Ball. Like, people like to joke Toriyama ends up doing that with female characters, but none of the others' *personalities* actually change (#18 remains as menacing as ever)...but Videl is like, unrecognisable, to the point Super is able to get a /surprise/ moment out of her acting strong-willed for a change.

Regarding Bluma's Box I think it's just the 'science can't compare to magic' trope, and Tapion accepted because he *wanted to believe*. I mean, the man had been sleepless for god knows how long. I would be ecstatic if I was offered the opportunity. Ultimately, I think both 'it didn't work' and 'Hirudegarn became too strong' work together, in a diminished capacity; Bluma had an idea that maybe could have worked at some point, but it was too late. All in all, man, I love this movie. Even the Bakuretsu Ryuken, being a self-indulgent out-of-context setpiece, it looks cool as fuck. And they could've included it in the movie's plot! Maybe Tapion knew the attack as some sort of ancient konnatsian technique and only goku at super saiyan 3 was strong enough to use it properly. They wouldn't even need more action, just dialogue.

Lately I've been watching a lot of the older Ultraman shows from the 70s, and I'm now actually seeing a lot of similarities between this movie's plot and a typical episode of those shows. Random evil alien shows up and charms the good guys. Convoluted plan to release a Kaiju on the city. Good guys fight kaiju but are ineffective. Titular hero shows up at last minute and kills kaiju.

He has no relevance to the plot and it should have been Trunks or Tapion (or even both) that took down Hirudegarn. This could have easily been achieved by setting it before the 25th Budokai, because then Goku would be dead, but oh well.

27:27 I have mixed opinions on the "Is Ultimate Gohan a transformation or a permanent state" argument. On the one hand, the idea that's presented in the manga - that Gohan can access his full power without the need to transform - is just about the only interesting thing about it, which is ruined if you treat it like a black haired Super Saiyan form. On the other, Ultimate Gohan *_is_* admittedly a huge downgrade visually from his normal design, so it's nice that they didn't throw away his normal look entirely in this version.

I personally don't think it really matters and Ultimate Gohan is just like something that's really easy for him to tap into which is part of what makes it really powerful, it's like a lightswitch for him or something. I'm kinda inclined to prefer it as a transformation, if only because it allows Gohan to continue looking like his old more carefree self when not fighting. That said, I think the light switch analogy works best. Unlike Super Saiyan, it's not something he should have to power up into. The power is always there just beneath the surface and Gohan can pull it out with little more than a blink of his eyes which are the only thing of substance that changes. It's less of a physical transformation and more like a state of mind, it's what happens the instant Gohan starts taking a fight seriously. *Addendum:* to be clear, I'm specifically referring to this younger version of Gohan, when I say the power is always there and he can pull it out in a blink. I'm conversely fine with how DBS handled it, that with lack of training he lost access to this state for most of that series, and how even upon regaining it he still couldn't use it quite so effortlessly anymore. It's sorta to Gohan what Ultra Instinct is to his dad, a power that can be integrated into his base form, but which still requires discipline and training to achieve that state.

Ye same, while it bugs me, if they’re not gonna use it the way its meant to be used, good, ultimate gohan looks like shit a third of the time anyways. At most i just wish we had a DragonBall brotherhood or jojo adaption treatment that had the hindsight to foreshadow and streamline plot details that wind up accidentally going to nothing in later parts of the story. When you know what Ultimate Gohan is supposed to be, even if you don’t like it, it makes seeing it used in such an odd way, distracting but ultimately leaves you feeling like the transformation was even more pointless than it already was.

Speaking of the sword. I do recall a few fan attempts to adapt the plot here to the Future Timeline in order to make Future Trunk's sword to be that sword. It's... probably one of the better elements of the comic. I don't think it works entirely, because Buu Saga level threat versus Weak Future Gohan and Pre-Super Saiyan Trunks isn't really a good idea. And even if we're to remove the power scaling. The Android's presence would probably end up with Gohan and Trunks dead even if they won.

Interesting little tidbit there how Tapion's sword looks almost identical to Future Trunks' own. This is clearly some cute little Easter Egg type reference they threw in there. I only really like, in terms of the original 13 Dragon Ball Z movies, Cooler's Revenge, Broly: The Legendary Super Saiyan and this one. To speak about its visual value, Wrath of the Dragon has great art work. Not only that, but the character focus is what really intrigues me. The fact that Tapion, a character who we have not met before and has such prominence, makes the film feel original. Its identity is like that of a final ballet. And that's what this is. It is the final of the original Dragon Ball films. And honestly, I think they go out on a high note.

This dragon ball z movie is my personal favorite. Manly because unlike the other movies this one doesn't have that a lot of action and is saved towards the end rather than in the middle. Meaning we get more character moments and see them interact before the big fight. I also like how it isn’t focused on the main villain but rather it focuses on a new character Tapion and how his struggle is related to the monster Hirudegarn. But also I’m a huge Kaiju fan so seeing them fight a Kaiju like Hirudegarn was a real treat. And while I’m kind of disappointed that Goku was the one to defeat Hirudegarn I really really like the Dragon Fist move. So I feel okay about that. It's by no means perfect but it's easily my favorite DBZ film just for that. and I'm really exited for the review of the TV adaptation of the Boo arc.

I’m going to be honest, homie, because of my attachment to DB and your knowledge on the series, I’m always delighted to hear your praise it. Especially the Z material. I know you don’t hate Dragon Ball or anything but I know it’s a lot more flawed than we sometimes give it credit for. So you criticizing it is completely valid. That’s what we’re here for. But, I’m always a little disheartened to hear folks ripping it apart. Ya know brand loyalty, nostalgia. Anyways! Always happy to see you post.

Definitely not in a hurry XD I wondered if Vegeta's almost non-existence in this movie is because near the very end they realized, or were told, that Vegeta would still be alive and they sort of haphazardly slotted him in at the last second?

I love kaijus and the fact that there is more dialogue and character momments in this movie, this one felt like one of the least formulaic of the DBZ movies, i have praise it for the incredible animation, this one and janembas movie are eaily among the best animated material in dragon ball history. Also since the villain is a kaiju the fighting scenes were completely different from what you usually get from DBZ, but its abvious why TOEI doesnt do it often, as it can only be done with a movie budget.

I remember when I first got into Dragon Ball. I did start with the Anime, but I started watching after TOEI started animating original Dragon Ball, so despite all the filler, I was able to watch the entire Anime story from beginning to end, then I watched all the Movies and Specials, then GT. At that point I didn't even know what a Manga was, or even Dragon Ball was even based on one, so it was surprising to me when I discovered it years later. I remember when Message Forums were the big thing, I was on the old MFG Forums with my Anime only logic and story...I thought I knew it all, and well I'm sure all of you know how well that went from me. I used that as a learning experience, much like Muten Roshi taught Son Goku and Kuririn about strength, there will always be someone out there who knows more than me, and never be lazy complacient or arrogant about what I know, and I've taken that to heart all of these years. Dragon Ball was there for me through some really messed up times, but it helped me through it. I have criticized Toriyama and TOEI on a lot, but in the end I will always be grateful to Toriyama for creating such an amazing story, and to TOEI for animating and in several ways expanding on the story that forever changed my life.

I doesn't feel like it would take too much to tweak this and fix it. Could tell the exact same story with only changing the details and have it make perfect sense. The one thing that stands out with this (and with the History of Trunk special), is the tone. I absolutely love and prefer the more serious tone and the bigger emphasis on the characters instead of the battles. The fights might be shorter, but they're more impactful; they carry more weight and meaning because of the character development and build up. The movies that are just one big fight from start to finish kinda bore me. It's also part of why I love the Great Saiyaman arc and would love to see more of Gohan's slice of life exploits. Instead of Super I'd rather just have an anime that continues from the Buu saga and follows Gohan and Videl and their superheroing - trying to balance school/work/their relationship, etc. It's criminal that we didn't get any of that in Super.

I remember getting a Japanese VHS of this film from a google threader named Rev Otana when I went to London in 2002 & 2003. I managed to get a lot of manga of the Piccolo Daimou Arc and 23rd Budokai (this was a few years before Viz published them) People who complain that Super was the first to treat Ultimate as a transformation forget it goes back here. I do wish they used Gohan more in the film. His spotting Tapion was a big moment which goes no where. The film does interest me. Being a fan of Kamesennin Gi/Kamisama Shirt & Boots Gohan attracts me, although the film does cement the Jinx that affects Gohan when he wears it. He does well in the Saiyaman suit against Hildegard, but when he wears the Gi,- ass kicked. Which will also happen in the BoG movie and the One Piece/Toriko x over. It’s not until the Universal Survival Arc that things go well for Gohan in the Gi. This movie does make me wish there was more stories from this period: Gohan in high school had such potential. I wish to note certain things I liked: Goten is dressed in Goku’s Kamesennin training clothes, the scene of Gohan blocking Kamesennin from Videl, Goku noting Trunks feeling for a shikabob, and helping him.
