The best substrate for humidity in my opinion is a mixture of eco earth and sand mixed together and 4-5 inches deep so they can burrow. My savannah loves that mixture and it holds all his burrows, never have any shedding problems.

If they enjoy a humid hide, I would recommend getting a humidity box with moss and other stuff in it. That way they can also regulate how much humidity they're getting.

I realize this is an older video but thank you for the content just the same ascI suddenly have a baby Savannah on my hands. I've kept reptiles for about 20 years but a Savannah was never on my list... not that I really have a list... but I've actually never bought a single reptile. They are all rescue/rehoming/rehab situations. I've rescued & rehabbed for release (native species)... and some I've rescued and given to good homes but many gave stayed with as you know how easy it is ti fall in love. I've never has a monitor though. In the past they just weren't that common in our local pet trade but I guess it's picking up. Thus past weekend I went to my favorite locally owned pet store, where they know me well, to pick up some feeder insects and rodents. The next think I know the manager say ti hold out my hands and plops a very agitated baby Savannah in my hands and says... " You NEED to take this home. No charge and habitat included." I could see right away the habitat wasn't great. The size is ok for the time being... but there were no lights... especially no UV. You could tell the water hadn't been poured out for travel but had evaporated at some point as there was a lot of white residue and dried poop in the dish. I'm not sure what the substrate is but itsso that needs to be improved.

If you're having issues with keeping the humidity, I would suggest using Coco husk and sphagnum moss. Instead of misting, you just need to mix water into the substrate and the moss, and make sure that it's not dripping wet. It should be moist to the touch!

Watching you’re video. Some good some bad. The Exo Terra’s are not good for enclosures because of the thermal gradient. Monitors need a hot spot of 120-130 degrees. You mentioned obese monitors. This is because most people do not practice proper husbandry an many die of fatty livers because temps aren’t right. Will a Savannah live at 80-90 degrees? Yes, but their metabolism isn’t working, hence the obesity. They need a large enclosure with a minimum of 18” of burrowing. Once properly heated and active with humid hides they are super active! For babies I use a Retes stack for thermal gradients. Over 14” they need a huge space. A super underrated species that is imported far too often to languish and die due to bad husbandry.

Commenting seeking help I have a baby but hes bigger than your little dude/dudette. Ive made him a burrow under his basking aria and used a slice of bark for that then got two sticks and another slice of bark on top and two smaller pieces with slate on top at the basking area which sits at 34.2c he got potting soil mixed with tortoise soil. The cool end has another corner hide that he never uses and a tub of water for a pool and hes got a sprinkle of bark on the top of the current soil, hes got a few decor pieces so fake plants for hides and artificially rock formations, the cold side sit at 24c via heat mat on the outside of the glass. He’s had 1 locust in three days and he stays in. The pre made burrow and never basks or come out. He has layers of stuck shed and is missing a toe (pet shop bought) he has a bowl of fresh water, bowl of small and normal medal words and locust and brown crickets all over yet just hiding. Ive tried to google the issue as I can’t find an exotic vet near me. Any tips? Ive even tried a large tub of water and kept him inside to try soak of the shed hes got. Humidity is 66%

Mine is about the same age as yours and she’s growing like crazy. She hasn’t pooped in about 5 days... I was wondering if anyone had any answers for that. Her enclosure is super accurate with temps and humidity. She’s very alert and active too and eats every day. Also she is shedding right now, maybe that could be the reason for no poop?

Hi. It’s clear from this video that you are passionate about your animals, but it’s not a good idea to be holding them when you’ve had them for just a couple of weeks. Gaining their trust is a process and they come from a very grim industry that sees them shipped across the world just days after hatching, then being re-packed and shipped to distributors and pet stores, then being plopped into an improper setup until the time of sale. When they are held outside of their tanks they lose heat and humidity rapidly along with the fact that this added stress can cause their health to deteriorate fast. There are also a lot of good reasons not to keep them in tanks. Wish you and those savs the best and keep learning.

Hi! I need some good advices. My less than a year old Western Hognose male hasn't eaten for over a month now and I'm a bit worried because he's still so young. I got him into a bigger enclosure but he stopped eating there and a couple weeks ago I switched him back to his old smaller enclosure but he still hasn't eaten. :/ I've warmed the pinkies with a hair dryer, tried to scent them with tuna and brained the pinkies but nothing has helped. :/ I haven't handled him unless in necessary situations. Should I just give him more time to settle back into his smaller enclosure or should I go to see a vet? He has plenty of substrate to burrow in, a lot of hiding places and temps are okay but he still ain't eating. :/
@Ricardowieringa
@Ricardowieringa 5 жыл бұрын
Kosmik hi from what j can see from the one video you have posted of him you seem to feed him outside of the enclosure when you do that snakes are more often prone to not eat other than that just keep waiting and moniter his weight if he drops with about 10% go see the vet immediatly other and watch out for a spine that is visible at all times that is a clear sign of an underweight snake good luck
