I think it goes for most reptiles, but it seems like when they're young they have more focus on survival, eating, and growing. Once they're bigger and feel more secure and confident, the fruits of working with them will start to show more, as well as more of their curiosity and intelligence. I've seen so many interesting videos, so it seems like don't be afraid to try to teach your monitor tricks or behaviors! I got Clawdius at just over a year old from someone who didn't have the time to keep him anymore, so I didn't get to experience his time when he was small. Fortunately he has always been mellow. After having him over 6 months I've really come to learn a lot and love him a lot. He always surprises me, and I feel like we've reached a good point in trust. He likes to be out and about, climb things, and cause trouble! But he is so much fun. He has gotten more into climbing on me because he wants to which makes me happy. I think it has been helpful that his tank in in my workroom next to my computer, so I am near him a lot of the time. He likes to watch me. When he was more timid, he would find a good hiding spot and watch me lots. They are so food motivated, so I always feed with tongs! Once they are more comfortable coming onto your hand for food, you can expand that to coming up your arm onto your shoulder (wear a long sleeve shirt!). I try to sit on his level too, like on the floor, sometimes when I feed him I make him come up on my leg or arm to get his food. Dog IQ toys and cat treat balls can be useful fun stimulation for a monitor too! I also got one of those "slow eater" dog bowls that has the shapes in it to dump crickets or whatnot into, to make him poke around and use his hands to get at them. Anyhow, I didn't know having a monitor lizard could be so fun and rewarding :D It's actually kind of exciting when I get to bring him home different foods, since there is a lot of different insects and other things he can eat, like quail eggs, live crawfish, f/t chicks, large raw shrimp, etc.

I just recumend you to put a guard around the heat lamp when he gets a bit biger because he could jump on it and burn his skin. It's not a hate coment or anything like that just a advise.

I got my Savannah monitor as a hatchling as well. In the beginning it was very untrusting except when being tong fed. When he got bigger and I didn’t force myself on him for the first year, I started doing the small positive interaction method that NERD talks about and it didn’t take long after that, now he hangs out with me and enjoys getting all sorts of massages.

Sorry for not being Josser, but Savannah Monitors get quite large as adults (4-5 ft+ in length, low to the ground but still big lizards) and they grow rather quickly as we've been seeing with cute lil Pancake! They're great, intelligent animals, but they're also quite wild a lot of the time (a lot of keepers talk about how they may never warm up to you at all, but that's mostly luck and technique I think) and as they're carnivorous they can do quite a bit of damage with their jaws if they wish to. Not to scare you off, by the way, just letting you know the realities of the species! If you're super passionate about them and have the time/space/money then they're really awesome, interactive reptiles to work with.

@@Blovee3 I'm a tad late to this video but I'm pretty sure that the sneezing sound you're hearing is just him huffing out air. My juvenile boa makes a similar noise when he's slightly unhappy with me/nervous/startled. I think it's a reptile thing in general to get all huffy and puffy lol.

@@saif3197, usually before shedding, you will notice reclusive behavior too. for example, its around feeding time and you notice your snake hasn't been out at all the last couple days. pay attention to their behavior. they are usually consistent and never really change their routine unless something is up like shed, poop, etc.
