I’m Australian and I live in a big city (Sydney) but I spent the first 18 years of my life in rural Australia and we had wombats (and kangaroos, koalas, birds) that would come into our yard because behind our home was forest. Wombats are usually shy and not aggressive, some will want attention or food (it gets very hot and they love bowls of cold water) or are just curious about their surroundings. Some will come right up to you, others will run away: they’re like cats that way. If you’re patient with shy ones and don’t chase after them, they will eventually see that you’re not a threat and let you pet and hold them. You just need to keep in mind that they’re burrowing mammals, they will dig holes. You can let them inside your home, but legally they can’t be kept as indoor pets because they require the outside as their natural habitat. They also have sharp teeth and claws, although you’d have to be doing something mean or really scary to them for them to bite or scratch hard enough to draw blood. I’ve never been bit or scratched by one, and I don’t know or anyone who has, but it can happen. The little girl in this video is proof of how gentle they are when you’re kind to them. Kangaroos are usually friendly and fun, but if you’re mean or aggressive they can kick you HARD or swat you with their strong and thick tail. What you do need to avoid in Australia is the snakes, the majority of which are poisonous, but it’s not like they’re everywhere all the time. I’ve lived in Sydney for 17 years and the only snakes I’ve seen were at the zoos.

​@Mike-rk8px I'm from Adelaide. I see snakes on my local beach fairly regularly. Eastern browns. As for wombats I went to Maria Island in Tasmania and I was told by a ranger that tourists try to pick up baby wombats for selfies and their mothers will rip you up to defend their young. The other thing she said was that they are incredibly aggressive to the Tasmanian devils. Apparently, the devils use unused old wombat burrows but when they get it wrong and try to occupy an active burrow, the wombat uses the hard plate in their butt to crush the devil against the walls of the burrow. Quite a few devils died this way. Long story short, they are lovely as long as they're respected.
