@higgolini Well Stephen was actually born in Telford, so I am guessing he moved to Sheffield at some point and met the rest of the band in Sheffield? I mean just listen to their first single released off Ugly Beautiful (1996) Goodnight, it sounds like.. PULP! another Sheffield band! saw them support Dodgy in 2019 at the Birmingham O2 Institute and bumped into Stephen! shook his hand ✋️ and had a brief chat and slipped in You're gorgeous which he kinda smiled at. Nice bloke who has actually had a hard life.

Been watching the weekly repeats of Top of the Pops on BBC iPlayer, which have now got up to 1996. The most recent one which I watched last night had this song on it. I'll be honest I'd forgotten about it but it's still a great song, the lyrics and how dark they are juxtapose totally with the production and the melody behind it!

The darkest song to ever claw it's way into the British top ten. A Trojan horse of a melody with a twisted underbelly of a lyric. Babybird seagulled millions with this, and most of them licked their wrists and thought it was ice cream.

I always felt really sad when j heard this. Even before I knew the motivation behind it. The woman in the story implicitly trusts the man because she is in love with him. The guy, on the other hand, doesn't care about her at all and is using her sexually. His actions are sad, lame and pathetic.

At a high school dance in the 90s, I strongly considered asking the DJ to play this song and dedicate it to the girl I had a crush on. Later I actually listened properly to the lyrics, not just the chorus, and I was very, very, VERY glad I didn't do it. And skimming the comments here it seems a lot of people haven't listened properly either.
