I always liked Chakotay and felt they did him (and Harry Kim) a disservice. Kim should have been promoted at least to Lt. and Chakotay should have had a lot more compelling stories.

Same. I think its because they never really did anything with it. He doesn't describe his personal ancestry, he has no decoration or personal effects. No different lifestyle. Cherokee have different traditions from Navajo, Crow, Shawnee, and so on. There are no traditions that we see, nothing on the Holodeck. He could have easily played something out on the holodeck, creating a life for himself within a tribe. It could have played a part in his decision to work on the maquis, it could have played any part. IT was just relegated to a tattoo. Or even better, don't give him a tribe, and allow him to to figure out his spirituality and identity on his own, adapting to life away from his native planet.

I’ve always referred to him as ‘Mayincaztecan’ because so much of the symbology associated with him is mixed and blended. And my references to Mayan, Incan, and Aztecan cultural notes don’t even account for the South-West USA inclusions visible with his dream quests and some of the blankets and art in his quarters. He’s a very 90s ‘this guy is native’ kind of character without much grounding in reality. (care of an over-analytical cultural anthropologist and lifelong Trekkie).

One thing I always liked about Chakotay was that, despite his genuine respect for Janeway and basically rejoining Starfleet by coming on board of Voyager, he still had genuine doubts about Starfleet protocols and rules, that originally pushed to join Maquis in the first place. At several points during the series, you can tell that he followed Janeway's orders almost without question, but he did show he had huge reservations about alot of them.

purely depends on rank and the short hand that military uses. being within a ship he could easily be called the XO (2nd in command) but he's never referred to that way because its not the starfleet way. B'elanna Torres is the best example she's called chief because she holds the job chief engineer but really she's a lieutenant junior grade, this is their rank "slang" that starfleet has adopted and B'elanna or even scotty (a lieutenant commander) would never be introduced by their rank they will be introduced by the position they hold, chief engineer.

it's pretty common in the US Military to abbreviate rank names in less-than-formal conversation. In most cases, you wouldn't make a distinction between a First Lieutenant and a Second Lieutenant, nor between a Sergeant and a Staff Sergeant. You might occasionally see a Private First Class referred to as "PFC [Whoever]" but equally likely to see them referred to as simply Private. In fact, the reason we have the phrase "Full Bird Colonel" is because referring to a Lieutenant Colonel as simply Colonel is so common, people felt a need to emphasize the higher rank. My experience is in the Army, not the Navy, but I imagine the same holds true. Sincerely (former) Specialist (Full Bird Private) RL Dodson.

Regarding rank in Star Trek: It is tradition in the US Navy to refer to address fellow officers as "Ensign," "Lieutenant," and "Commander." Also, communication brevity is valued in the Navy. If Commander Chakotay were ever to be addressed as "Lieutenant Commander," it would be by Captain Janeway and only if he were in SERIOUS TROUBLE .. or getting promoted .. or being buried .. which are similar to being in trouble.

If they went with 'Seven likes girls' plot back then, it would be brave for time period and more logical in the way. Chakotay may only have/use a single name, similar to Klingons. Spock mentions in TOS that he does in fact have a last name but it's unpronounceable by humans so the same might apply to Tuvok with Tuvok being his given name. Neelix may also only have one name, a family name was never mentioned but Neelix is certainly his first name. The mistake here is assuming all cultures must use two names.

I'm Dene and was really looking forward to having someone from a culture somewhat close to mine. I can't describe how disappointed I was when even at 13 year old I could recognize anything to do with his heritage was blackface style stereotypes.

Except....nobody but you is saying that. 20 plus years gone by, never heard anyone complain about how Chakotay's Heritage worked, other than to say there wasn't enough clarity, or consistency. Or just the plain old "wanting more Chakotay centered stories/episodes". I certainly would have preferred that over Janeways Hologram Love Interest crap, or anything Kazon. What ur on about....is only relevant in your head dude. Chakotay's backstory is nowhere near a "blackface" event. I feel bad for you that you see such negativity in something that was written as an allegory to what happened to indigenous people, so that it doesn't happen again. That was the whole point. To make people aware that shitty things happened to a certain people, for no good reason, and we should know better by now.

8:45 You say its common in Starfleet to "replace" a lower rank with the higher on; but this is actually a common US military custom. Lieutenants JG and 2nd Lieutenants are habitually simply referred to as "Lieutenant" (Although so are 1st Lieutenants); Lieutenant Commanders as Commander; Lieutenant Colonels as Colonel. Its simply shorthand, because people are lazy and don't want to use the full rank.

I was glad when a native American character was included but somehow never particularly liked the character and found him boring. I don't know if this is due to Beltram as an actor not being particularly dynamic or his character becoming more of a background character or his character not being fleshed out. The character of Kim although under utilized and not full fleshed out was actually a very likable character. Chakotay with his ancestral tattoo felt in danger of being characterture of a native American. It may be due to my heritage my expectations were too high or toothed actors were simply much more dynamic but came across as one of the more forgettable characters.

the Seven/Chakotay romance was horrible. I remember a poll at the time which (rightly) called it the worst romance on television. If Seven HAD to get together with someone, either The Doctor or Kim would have been better. As for Chakotay, they needed to somehow increase his usefullness...perhaps by playing more into his former link to the new Collective.

the rank naming thing is from the navy. lt cmdr is cmdr, ltjg is lt, petty officer third through first class are just petty officers. the only exceptions youll see are chief petty officer and above with senior chief petty officer being cut to senior and master chief petty officer to master chief.

He's referred to as Commander, which is appropriate for a Lt Cmdr and a full Commander. Also, he's Operations Officer/Ship XO; the position adds a certain degree to the rank.

Well, technically, Chakotay served as father figure to Harry and, highely reluctantly, to Tom Paris. And that is shown in many episodes. You could count that as being kind of a mentor to both of them.

I hated Chakotay's exploration of spirituality and I hated it even more when Earth mythologies and even dinosaurs posted up in the delta quadrant. It completely ruined all immersion for me. I also hated the cloned Voyager episode and anything to do with time travel. I also disliked any episodes related to Q. It made a lot of sense for Q to show up in TNG and even DS9 but not Voyager. With a wave of his hand he could have sent everyone home yet didn't. The funny thing about this is it would have been a better series if that happened. The "stranded far from home" trope was milked to death and should have ended in season one. I would have loved to see Voyager exploring star systems in the alpha quadrant like TNG.

Robert Beltran was actually unhappy with the show and wanted to leave it at several points, even going as far as to ask to be killed off permanently. Similar thing happened to Harry Kim. However, they changed their minds eventually and producers had Kes removed from the show instead.

I enjoy watching Voyager. But it's distracting to know how much better the series could've been. The show went downhill after Seven was introduced. It is commonly thought that Seven helped the show have higher ratings but that is not true. Seven got screen time because Jeri Ryan was doing the show runner.

Hi, If Chakotay resigned his commission. That ment he was just an ordinary person. on the street. With some Star Fleet training. Its like you leave your channel. you are no longer one of the presenters of the channel TrekCulture on KZbin. You are just one of the people who watch the channel. He should not have the rank he has on Voyager. You can't say he got the rank, because they where so far away from Earth. What would have made sense. Is you see all the Marquee going through some sort of exams to prove they are upto the standared of the Star feet. Then getting the rank they where in Star Fleet. Now Im saying only make it a one or two episods. And then get one with the show.

well you might ask what happened to the maquis and what happened to the cardassians by the time they got back. 2373 Maquis destroyed , with only a few members able to evade capture or death, 2375 by the end of the Dominion War Cardassia Prime was in ashes; devastated by the Jem'Hadar, who had been ordered to wipe out the Cardassian species for their betrayal. Over eight hundred million men, women and children were slaughtered in this planet-wide genocide. 2378 voyager returns. 800 years later Cardasians are part of starfleet?
