The reason you aren't supposed to do knots with the thread is because those knot sit up from the surface of the leather and are more likely to rub against things and get worn through, causing the bag to start to come apart from the wear and tear. When using nylon or poly thread, you can melt the ends causing it to sit down into the holes where it mushrooms out a little and bonds with the threads there, so it is very secure. If you are using cotton or linen thread, then you use a toothpick to dab some glue into the hole to achieve the same thing. Hope that helps you understand why they say not to knot the thread.

I love Babylon Leather. I have made two beautiful handbags, and my friends are amazed at how wonderful they are. All designer bags are handmade, so I felt wonderful having made my own. It’s also great learning a new skill. I’m now thinking about ordering a third. I’m glad you’ve discovered this too Catherine 😊

So glad I watched this, although I always watch your videos, the cross stitching you did is something I’ve been trying to find the “way” to do it, because I have a leather bag from my grandmother that the stitching had broken out of so now I can restitch and carry the wonderful bag.

Really beautiful! I had a similar handled bag and after a bit I lost the decorative screw - I replaced it with something functional, but the bag wasn't as pretty - I would recommend some locktight on the screws so you don't lose one over time!

For the cost, it's probably OK for one or two bags. For that bag, you'd need about $20 worth of tools and leather runs $6 to $12 square foot, so if a person really wants to dive in to leather working, it's a pretty affordable pastime.

That project just looks like so much fun, and the leather and design is just beautiful. I took a quick look at what they offer, but I'm going to sleep on it a bit. Might be something to work on during the winter! The difference between "your" bag and the purchased bag was amazing. Just looking at one detail, the long straps: the leather on "your" bag looked soft and pliable, and on the other one, the leather stood straight up. *Wow.* Loved seeing you work on this and hearing you describe how satisfying and relaxing it was to execute.

This is off-topic, but could you do an up cycle where you take a pair of sweatpants that don’t have side seam pockets and put in a pair of pockets? also, I just saw a sweater with a V-neck that has an attached collar and cuff on it. So it gives the look of two a shirt under the sweater but it’s only one piece of clothing. That could be a fun up cycle to do as well thanks.

Catherine- I was inspired to order 2 of the bags after seeing the construction you were able to easily complete. I am a New York State, USA customer and can tell you that I have now tried to place the order 3 times with 2 different banks and 2 different bank cards. (I verified that funds are available in both accounts.) The transactions have been denied each time in spite of my verifying that I was actually making the order and entering verification codes provided by each bank. Of course I will contact each bank when they open and I have written Babylon Leather to alert them to the issue; however, I thought I should let you know that ordering is not going smoothly at all and while your tutorial was inspiring, this ordering experience is quickly dampening my enthusiasm for the project (and the project I hoped to give as a Christmas gift). Reviews on line seem to be good, but -so far-the ordering experience is far from favorable.

Depending on what they are, you might want to consider a leather conditioner. Leather dries out as it ages. At some point it starts to deteriorate to the point where conditioner won't save it.
