Hey, it's been a long time 😜🤘 Awadama Fever means "bubblegum fever", this song was created by the same composer who wrote Gimme Chocolate!! (no wonder you get the same vibes) and it was intended to release before GC! blew up going viral in 2014 and getting mix critics overseas including some saying they're doing "bubblegum pop music", either way is a good song for some fans to think they did this as a way to respond to those. I think they're so respectful and polite and they even said that they take critics from everyone and will try to learn and get better instead of doing a song as a way to give a sort of middle finger to anyone, they will only raise the kitsune up.🦊🤘 Anyway this song sounds heavy and got some riffs and rhythms you might probably already heard before, for me I can even hear some drums elements from ska songs but if you want a clearly ska rhythm song i recommend "YAVA!" with the Kami Band intro live at Big Fox Festival 2017. Since the composer Takeshi Ueda got a punk and digital hardcore background this song got some of those elements and even some of the drum & bass, again don't want to give spoilers but one of the new songs got more clear d&b element, you'll hear it for sure. The heavy riff you heard here is probably the same from "The Powerpuff Girls" cartoon show, you know, three girls with super powers just like our girls here. You also missed the rare Kami Band intro to this song at Five Fox Festival 2017 (Red Fox and Silver Fox got that intro), but sadly you won't find that at BMRR, only a live comp around YT, I do like this version either way as well the whole Trilogy Of 2015 live concerts. Song is about traveling with a bubblegum mint flavored time machine to reach your dreams, trippy maybe but like with Gimme Chocolate!! and some others songs is all about to just have fun and party. There's a funny interview with the girls and the western journalist ask them if they ever went on travel with a mint flavored time machine (?) and SuMetal said just "No!" (like "you kidding me?") lmao Thanks for sharing this, sad about you needed to cut a section because of the blocked but we totally understand. Kitsune up! 🦊🤘🔥

'Awadama Fever' is a song about chewing bubble gum. Adawama a brand of Japanese bubble gum. It might be the only metal song ever in history about bubble gum. This song was written by Takeshi Ueda for Babymetal as a big middle finger to their critics who said Babymetal is only pop music (J-pop, idol pop, etc) or bubblegum pop. So what does he do? He wrote and arranged the most poppiest of any Babymetal songs.

The Japanese word, 'awa (泡, あわ,アワ)' means 'bubble'. The word, 'dama' is actually written as 'tama (玉, たま)', and it means 'ball'. But when we connected them to one word, 'awa-tama', the 'ta' is pronounced as a muddled 'da'. The word, 'awadama' is not found in any Japanese dictionary I have, so I believe it was coined one for this song. I think it is an image of bubble gum, chewing gum, etc. I heard that overseas, transient and boring pop songs are called 'bubblegum pops'. I didn't know that, and it seems that BM haters initially attacked this song as being exactly the kind of bubblegum song it is. But I love this song because it's very bright and very fun, about putting our(awa) dreams on bubbles and going wherever you want to go! It is also very BM-like in the way it gets heavier in the bridge. The 'bubbles' they represent is also 'a mint-flavored time machine', haha. I think the bridge dance of the girls represents that time machine. However, this song reminds me of the famous Japanese children's song, 'シャボン玉 (Shabon-dama, Soap Bubbles)' written by Ujo Noguchi (野口雨情). Ujo is the one who also wrote the lyrics to 'Red Shoes' which appears in the lyrics of CMIYC. 'Soap Bubbles' is a bright and cute song too, but the lyrics hint at a bit of sadness and I love it... And I think you have good eyes / ears if you associate this song with Gimme Choco. Both songs were composed by Takeshi Ueda of the Japanese hardcore, punk, mixture metal band, 'The Mad Capsule Markets'. I am not familiar with metal music at all, but many metalheads in Japan often have said, 'Awadama Fever' has much MCM vibes. Pleaes check its song, 'Chaos Step' out! Thank you from Japan.

Actually "Bubble Gum" music is a 1960's term! A popular band that was first labeled bubble gum music was "Ohio Express." They're biggest hit was "Yummy, Yummy, Yummy." Another band called 1910 Fruit Gum Company also had some mediocre hits.

Professor AJ Heartley provided a great lyrics explanation on his KZbin channel. AFAIR Awadama is a Japanese brand of candies/bubblegum. Chewing Awadama bubblegum is like a mint-flavoured time-machine, where you can relax and let your thoughts wander freely; quite poetic for such a happy/silly song; one of my favourite songs by BM 🤘👍

Here is my personal interpretation of the lyrics (regardless of the middle finger to the haters complaining about bubblegum pop or bubblegum metal): In Japan an old candy exists called: awadama. You can see the candy in the video on KZbin by Duane-metal: Learning Japanese with BABYMETAL (80) Awadama Fever-3 the lyrics are about bubblegum which will allow you to travel in time... I think the song writer probably had this candy in their youth and sometimes tastes and smells can trigger memories, I think that is what this candy does for the song writer... 🙂

Hearing the studio version in full quality (preferably with IEMs) is so cool. This song might be the only of theirs where the studio version is a better experience because of the exceptional mixing. The electronic sound is circulating around the head and the drums go from side to side in front of the face. Very uplifting song too, gets my head bobbing.

The lyrics to Awadama Fever (Bubblegum Fever) might just be the cutest middle finger ever to the critics who said Babymetal wasn't metal and was just "bubblegum pop". Babymetal's "mint flavored time machine" takes us anywhere and I take that to mean that BM/Koba have the freedom to do any style of music they want. But the ironic pop/rave references start even before the first words with the drum beats which are the now almost banal "amen" drum break. It was also used in the opening theme to "The Powerpuff Girls"...who are also three cute girls who are strong and fierce. So we get a very "bubblegum pop" first half of the song and then maybe the heaviest metal breakdown in BM's catalog. The only more rave/dubstep/ironic song BM have is "Headbanger Night of 15 Mix" which is definitely worth a watch as it is purposefully mimed. But you should react to BM's greatest achievement "Tales of the Destinies".

Great reaction. You couldn't have done two much more different songs than this and FDTD in one day. "Awadama Fever" is just great fun, definitely up there among my own favourite BABYMETAL songs. I see Jake Muller already told you the same composer - Takeshi Ueda - wrote this and 'Gimme Chocolate' (I think he is best known for his band Mad Capsule Markets). The (almost certainly imaginary) story behind 'Awadama Fever' ... DISCLAIMER: This has never been said by them or anybody connected with the band at all, so it is only my own take on it and I (or someone - I can't recall exactly where I got it from) probably made this whole thing up, so I will emphasise THERE IS ALMOST CERTAINLY NO TRUTH IN IT and it should probably be taken with the biggest pinch of salt - but it would amuse me no end if there was even a little bit of truth in it: Some interpret how and why this song came about as being because they were criticised early on (possibly after 'Gimme Chocolate' went viral, possibly even before that) for producing "Bubblegum pop-metal with squeaky high voices". Next thing you know, a song about bubblegum - but not just any bubblegum, this bubblegum has special properties. Chew on this bubblegum and it can take you wherever you dream of going, it's a mint flavoured time machine - step aboard and see how far this dream might go, the only limit is your imagination or how much you can dream. They took everything the critics and haters said they didn't like and turned it all up to 11. Quite possibly the most polite middle finger to haters ever given ... far more likely (as they don't do middle fingers or take offence and every opinion matters to them) it is their "Criticise us and we'll take it - and then we will make something great of it" attitude.

Early in their career alot of metal heads and critics did call a gimmick or bubblegum band . But after their first music festival in the UK in 2014. The people started to take them as a metal band. They have done two world tours one in 2016 and one in 2018/19 . They also have toured with greats of the rock and metal band.

Oh a pity you missed the version with the Kami Band intro! In the Silver Fox and Red Fox festival, when they perform this song the crowd sings along a lot :D This is also one of my favourite songs from the second album :) When you do a reaction to Yava from second album and Kagerou from third album, be aware that there are performances with a Kami Intro: you might want to look for those :D
