Just wait until you see them live, that is where they really shine. Su, the lead singer said in an interview last year or 21 that the most important show they ever did was in the UK at Sonisphere 2014. The song Ijime Dame Zettai, it was their 1st big show outside Japan. See how the UK festival crowd reacted when most did not know them or were pissed that gimmick band was playing Reading.

It is indeed worth watching the video of that festival, as much for the story behind that festival as the performance.

The video was released June of 2013 making Su 15 at the time. Moa and Yui would have been 13. The song is basically telling the story of how women are expected to "act" a certain way. Crying on the inside while smiling on the outside. When Su has the spoken line and displays the tanto (knife) she is quoting a Japanese gangster movie, where the gangster's daughter says "Maiden......should not be underestimated" I always had issues telling Moa and Yui apart. But if the show their faces and the lighting is right you will see Yui has a rounder face and black hair while Moa has a more pear-shaped face, dimples and brown hair.

_Sore!_ 🦊🤘🔥 Glad to see you're back with this suggestion, you can enjoy the song with the live sound of the Kami Band at Budokan 2014 or Budokan 2021 with the new formation. Fans were enjoying and having so much fun watching this live every night at Sabaton's Europe Tour and later at Asian and Australian Tour, they also got another Europe headline tour in November, along with the Babyklok Tour in the US, you don't wanna miss the chance to see them live and performing this song like they did recently in all these concerts, we always love the shanenigans between the girls in the middle section after the breakdown. This was released in 2013 when having around 13/14 (Yui and MoaMetal )and 15 yo (SuMetal, the lead singer), so is one of their early hits and is full of japanese elements, like the "shamizen", a japanese traditional instrument, and is a party festival song (matsuri). "Sore" "seiya" and "soya" are typical shouts among Japanese festival and it works like a "c'mon!" or "let's go" for them. During the breakdown you can hear another typical japanese folk song called "Sakura Sakura" and they're doing a traditional Japanese dance. In summary, song is about female empowerment and if you follow the lyrics you'll see about it, "Megitsune" means female fox (vixen) and they talk about women acting with a smile in their face while crying inside, just to fit in society or what is expected from them, when they're kind to you they're not trying to make falling in love with them, they're just being their own way, and men tend to confuse and think they're cheating or deceiving like the mythological fox. "Megitsune" used to be a peyorative term in Japanese culture, pretty much just like around the world, but BM is using this as a way to empower women despite the meaning itself. When SuMetal is pulling out the "tanto" she's saying "maidens shouldn't be underestimated", that refers to a japanese mob film about some boss mafia daughter before attacking someone. During live performance she does something different and looks really cool doing it. Megitsune is a quintessential BM song and among top ranking songs by fans, SuMetal said she didn't mastered yet, that's why she used to sound check with this song before live concerts. The origin of the "fox sign" is really long to explained but here's a short summary: The Fox God (Kitsune Sama) is the Metal God who sent these girls (and Kami Band after to help them with the metal sound) to unify the world and set them free from Jpop slavery. The kitsune sign came out by accident around the time they created the group by the girls when trying to imitate the typical metal horn sign they noticed it was similar when doing fox shadow shape, they implemented this as part of the lore, imagery, theme and live concerts, the lore is huge so take your time and keep digging and riding the Foxhole 🦊🤘 Btw they praised for real and made a ritual to the Fox God for this song to be a hit and successful, and thanks to the Fox God this is one of their major hits and favorite BM fan songs. -NotACult- 👀 This is a song with the arrangements by YuppeMetal, he took inspiration from "Memphis May Fire - The Sinner" for the drum section, another song that i recommend you for your own time if you want. Next suggestion: - Road Of Resistance live in Japan official live, in case you get some block issues try using some filters. I really enjoyed your reaction and how you got shocked with this song. See you next time. 🦊🤘🔥

Great reaction, thanks! Yeah, we know, believe me. "Megitsune" is one of their most loved songs and their most played live one (277 times and counting!) since they play it in almost every concert. And yes this is three years (give or take) previous to "Karate". But unlike that, this is metalcore based, electronicore actually with a really cool Japanese touch. That brutal breakdown hides a well known Japanese folk song called "Sakura Sakura" (cherry blossoms) which can be read as an homage to their origins as a sub-unit of Sakura Gakuin, a J-pop idol group. At the time they produced this song, they just split from SG. Did you notice we put "kitsunes" up all the time? 😁 🤘🦊

Megitsune:- "Megitsune" (メギツネ, "Vixen") is the second major label single by the Japanese kawaii metal band Babymetal. It was released in Japan on June 19, 2013 as the fifth single from the album Babymetal. It is also the first single released independently from the idol group Sakura Gakuin. The single was first announced for a June release on April 1, 2013. The single was released in four versions: a standard edition and three limited editions. The "Ki", "Tsu", and "Ne" (Kitsune means "fox" in Japanese) limited editions included single artwork focused on Nakamoto, Mizuno, and Kikuchi respectively, and their included DVDs feature footage of two songs from each of the live performances from Live: Legend I, D, Z Apocalypse. Additionally, the single included a chance to contain a ticket to the premium event Kitsune Festival at Meguro Rock May Kan on July 14, 2013. To promote the release, the band was featured in the June issue of Marquee and on the cover of the July issue of Hedoban, in addition to collaborating with Tower Records for the 34th rendition of the event No Music, No Idol?. Babymetal concert chronology:- •Babymetal Death Match Tour 2013: May Revolution (2013) •Babymetal World Tour 2014 (2014). The Babymetal Death Match Tour 2013: May Revolution (BABYMETAL DEATH MATCH TOUR 2013 -五月革命-, Babymetal Death Match Tour 2013 -Gogatsu Kakumei-) was a promotional concert tour by Babymetal, occurring in conjunction with the promotion of "Megitsune". The band performed four shows, with two on the final tour date, at the same venue. Customers who purchased tickets to the tour could receive an exclusive edition of the single, with a remix by Yuyoyuppe, under the name DJ'Tekina//Something. According to Mizuno, the tour was designed to be a "training tour". During each of the four shows the three members wore stage costumes for the eras of "Doki Doki ☆ Morning" (which had become nostalgically small for them), "Headbangeeeeerrrrr!!!!!", and "Ijime, Dame, Zettai", respectively, with the final show premiering new costumes for "Megitsune". Welcome to Babymetal's Foxhole. The Fox God is Babymetal's patron deity and so you'll see lots of foxes and this song is drawing parallels with the traits of foxes in Japanese myths and the traditional way Japanese women (and maybe all women) have been expected to behave in patriarchal societies. Megitsune is an early Babymetal song released in 2013 so Su will be 15 in the video and Moa and Yui are 13. Megitsune, or vixen, is one of BM's female empowerment songs. The temple and the Japanese instruments sets a very traditional tone, but right from the start old Japanese values are challenged as Yui and Moa pull on Su's obi (sash) to release her from her kimono so she can do the high leg lift dance. That dance contrasts with the traditional restrained dance in the break down. That break down is a very old song called "Sakura, Sakura" and is about the cherry blossom, but BM even subvert that and Su sing's "kitsune, kitsune" (fox, fox). This also might be an expression of BM moving away from their parent idol group which was Sakura Gakuin or Cherry Blossom Academy. In Japan the fox is seen as a clever shape shifter and the lyrics liken women to female foxes in the way they have to change themselves to please others or to hide their true feelings. In the dance BM mime wearing a mask and also putting on make up as another way to hide themselves. But the strength of women is emphasized and the expression of this peaks when Su shouts: "Otome wa nametara ikan zeyo" and draws a knife from her microphone. The phrase is translated as "Maidens shouldn’t be underestimated" (credit Du-metal), although that is a polite interpretation. It's also used in a famous Japanese gangster film called Onimasa and is translated there as " don't you sh*t with me". Some of BM's lyrics can be quite shocking to Japanese audiences and native speakers say that gets lost on non-Japanese speakers who have to experience Babymetal's lyrics through the distorting lens of translation. For your next video react to a live performance, BM are always best live. Look at "Babymetal Headbanger - Legend 1997".

The vocals are something you get acclimated to. And once you make it further down the fox hole, vocals that used to bug might not anymore. It's just an unusual combination, and it takes some adjustment. Headbanger would be a great next watch. *But not the MV.* Headbanger Live from the Legend of 1997 concert is a must-watch. We always say BabyMetal is best live, and you've just knocked out the two possible exceptions to that rule with the Karate and Megitsune MVs. So def go live from this point forward. Trust us.🤘🦊🤘

Lead singer Su-metal, was chosen because her vocals are powerful enough not to out done by the heavy music. Yui- metal, Moa -metal are the back up. Where babymetal shines are defiantly live performances. I would suggest... Headbangerr live in Tokyo. Road of Resistance live in Japan ijime dame zettai live sonisphere Those are amazing performances. You will be amazed how they can capture an audience. You will soon hear people say. " it's not a cult" lol. Now there first video was " Doki Doki Morning" that's when they were youngest and perhaps the cutest video for them .

This song was the first single released after Babymetal separated from their parent Idol group, Sakura Gakuin, at the end of March 2013. Su-, who was the lead member, "graduated" out as the group was age limited (10-15). Yui and Moa would remain in Sakura Gakuin for another 2 years, graduating in March 2015, while also continuing in Babymetal.

Yeah! Knew you were gonna dig this one! Su (lead singer) was a mere 13 years old when they put this song out! And yeah, her vocal skill even at that age is UN-bloody-REAL! The theme of the song is really cool as well, talking about societal expectations placed on women and girls, using the fox imagery (foxes are often thought of as trickster spirits) to talk about having to put on a facade. And the culmination with the microphone/knife over the line "maidens should not be underestimated" is actually a brilliant use of more "traditional" metal concepts to tell that story.

Good reaction! Megitsune is my favorite song (not really an original sentiment, but can't argue with perfection). I am sure you will get a lot of great suggestions, but I would also suggest mixing in a few of their newest tracks as it's mostly the older stuff that gets recommended early on. Their entire discography is fantastic, but you'll really get a feeling for the evolution of the band and SU-METAL's vocals with songs like: Shine, Divine Attack, Monochrome and Believing (all english lyrics for that one - but difficult to find video yet).

If I remember correctly, at the time this MV was made the lead singer, Su, was 14 and the other 2, Moa and Yui, were 12. It might be 16 and 14, respectively, but I'm almost positive it's 14 and 12. Su's (think mini SuA if that helps) voice is one of the main reasons this group exists. As you are probably aware of by now, they started as idol singers which, in Japan, more often than not meant cutesy pop singers. When their manager, who was / is a huge metal fan, heard Su sing he knew right away that her voice and vocal talent would be able to compete it the hard and harsh instrumentals that come with rock and metal music. He decided to try putting her in front of a metal band and see what happened. The rest, as they say, is history. And, yes, after the initial "WTF did I just hear" shock wears off, after you've been exposed to it for a bit, you start to get used to the 'cutesy' tones of Moa and Yui and, somehow, it all starts to work. And now for something completely different... More bands to react to? I think another all female rock band is in order. They're called Doll$Boxx and their song Take My Chance is a real banger. Check it out. Obligatory link: kzbin.info/www/bejne/o6aVq2eLm56HncU (heheh. He has no idea what he's in for. This is gonna be fun. 😈)

The MV was released June 4, 2013 and I think it was recorded only months earlier. Putting Su- at age 15 since the preceding December, and Yui and Moa at age 13½.

Great reaction, Mate! The quintessential Babymetal song...great hype and energy! You are correct, they were younger in this video....as in the one I am about to suggest. Consider giving "Catch me if you Can" from the Legend 1997 show (here is the link) kzbin.info/www/bejne/j5qke5iBnNqZg80. This version was live in 2013 and the 1997 reference is related to the year of Su Metal's (the lead singer) birth...this is her 16th Birthday concert, and this song features an intro by the "Kami Band" Babymetal live band. Pretty much whatever you listen to will be different and fun!

Good suggestion - but that is from Budokan Black Night, March 2014 (I was confused as you mentioned the Kami Band intro and they didn't do that at legend 1997, the girls hyped the crowd for a couple of minutes instead).

Everything you say at the end is spot on. However, I have to disagree with one detail: The two songs you listened to are not that heavy. All right, they are harder than some metal bands go. But BABYMETAL can and does go harder. For some songs, anyway.

Great reaction, good to see you come back so soon ... and well done with the pronunciation. 'Megitsune' is a big favourite, often coming top in fan polls and it is the song they have played live more times than any other (something like 280 times now?). You were right, they were even younger in this video - 'Karate' was recorded in 2016, 'Megitsune' was 3 years earlier in 2013 - when it was released Su-metal was 15, Yuimetal and Moametal were 13, about to turn 14. 'Megitsune' is also arguably the song that showcases better than most what BABYMETAL are about and one that truly reflects their Japanese culture the best starting with the traditional instruments (shamisen or koto, you decide which) in the intro and the lyrics about women being compared to foxes (kitsune - which also explains all the fox masks in the video) which, in Japanese mythology, are able to shape shift and take human form in order to deceive. It is also a bit of a push back against the traditional female role in Japanese society I think - or maybe it is - whilst also praising and celebrating the women who have played that role over the years for their strength. They are saying that women wearing their make up and hiding their true feelings ("crying at heart, smiling at face") are not trying to deceive anybody, they are simply trying to please everybody - so they are not kitsune (foxes), they are megitsune (female foxes or vixens) - and they are strong. The melody used in the breakdown with the pig squeals in the middle of the song (they also use it as the intro when they play it live) is from the very well known Japanese folk song called 'Sakura Sakura' (Cherry Blossoms). When Su pulled out the tanto (short blade) from her microphone she said "Otome wa ... nametara ikan zeyo." (Maidens ... shouldn't be underestimated). The last part of this is a famous quote from a Japanese gangster movie said by the daughter of a gang boss. Much of the video was shot on location at the Asagaya Shinmei Shrine in Tokyo. This has become a place of pilgrimage for BABYMETAL fans visiting Tokyo. The guys at the back waving the traditional instruments about were dancers with the lady who did the fan dance's troupe. I'm sure you already have a load of recommendations and requests for more songs, I will simply say you are yet to hear them at their best - singing and performing live and supported by the Kami Band, so whatever song you choose, please make it a live performance.

I'm not one of The One, but the only real complaint to be had about the group is the comparatively slow rate of their releases. Su-metal is obviously a great singer and the backing bands are amazing. As an ancient prog rog listener Tales of the Destinies remains my favorite track of theirs: as I understand it they rarely performed it since it is filled with tempo changes and interesting time signatures, but there is a good live version for you to react to. Since you've begun your journey into jrock, I'd recommend Nemophila, Gacheric Spin and, maybe, BiSH (Brand-new idol SHit). For Nemophila my favorite track is Life which they made after their extremely excellent drummer Tamu had her first kid. For Gacheric Spin, I'd go with one of their side projects Doll$boxx and the MV Take My Chance. BiSH was a very punk approach to the Japanese idol scene, and so their tracks are all over the map in terms of genre, but their sole symphonic metal track NON TiE-UP is fantastic. And of course in the wake of Babymetal, the underground idol scene became extremely fertile with producers willing to try any genre. A couple of good one-offs might be aminA's Caravan and Fruitpochette's CleverDick.

Thanks for the reaction. Megistune is still one of my favorites, and a lot of other people too I guess since they still play it almost every live show. Edit: To see an older SU-METAL sing this watch one of the Budokan shows from 2021, there might even be a newer version from the tour this year by now. Su's voice sounds more mature, I like it better personally.

Thumb up even before watching your video 😁 Hope you'll react to their live performance next times 🤘🤘🤘🤘 Megitsune is one of my top 3 BM songs. Even not speaking japanese at all, i almost can sing it entirely, just because i listened to it SO MANY TIMES ! My suggestion, a rarely chosen song by reactors, a live compilation of Kagerou : kzbin.info/www/bejne/fpiWgqaGfpirZ68 (with an amazing intro by kami band)
