I’ve learned so much about babyproofing since my last video on the topic. I stressed about it so much, but in the end your kid will let you know the areas of concern right away. That said, there a few things I found that I think should be on everyone’s babyproofing checklist.

Thank you, Susan. This is very necessary for new moms. The anxiety and everyone pressuring new moms “do this and do that” is really really unnecessary. Your message is a great one...go with it and baby will let you know what you need to do. Thank you for your beautiful wisdom...intelligent and calm approach to keeping baby safe. Love you.

I think it depends a lot on what your house looks like and your kid's behavior. We have everything anchored to the wall because my daughter is a climber. We have all drawers and cabinets latched, mostly to prevent messes tbh. And we have gates around our TV, bookshelves/display cabinets, cat stuff, and our kitchen. Some people don't have to do that but my kid would for sure Hansel and Gretel herself in the oven the first chance she got.

Good advice to wait and see your child's personality before doing major baby proofing. My 4th son is a tornado so we went overboard. He walked at 10mo so by 1yr he was so fast if we looked away even for a second he was gone and he loved climbing everything. He's 23mo now and we just found out he has Autism. He has no sense of danger and is an elopement risk so I am definitely glad we went crazy with securing everything we could. That is one less thing we have to worry about. Im still in the process of finding a way to secure our front door so it's safe but not super annoying to use. It's a work in progress.

Agreed. I was told we needed to babyproof our house before the baby even arrived, and we didn't because it seemed silly. Now that my son's almost one year old, he's real good at showing us what we need to babyproof, and we handle each hazard as it comes. If you're watching your child, nothing too crazy is likely to happen.

I totally agree with you! My son is 2 and I really only did sockets and just teach him what he’s not suppose to touch and play with because you’re going to go over other people’s houses and spend the night at my parents or in laws house where it’s not baby proofed. Yes it gets a little annoying sometimes with having to repeat yourself but he slowly catches on. And again like you said you’re not leaving your baby alone for hours lol. Love your mommy and baby related videos 💕

OMG! Thank you so much for this! I watch your channel all of the time and love when you post things like this that are super helpful! I'm currently almost 7 months pregnant with my first and freaking out about my house. I even put baby proofing stuff on my registry to try and get ahead of the game. Now I'm glad that I think the only real thing I'll need is outlet covers and some sort of bumper edge for my dining table as well as cabinet latches for the cleaning supplies. Again this was super helpful and I'm glad I didn't pay for a baby proofing consultant. Thank you!!!!

We got plastic cups for everyday use because our daughter broke the glass ones and injured herself. I usually used a bag to tie the cabinets temporarily together when we were in kitchen so she couldn't open it. Also it helps to let kids roam around and experience instead of baby proofing whole house. Like you said, we don't leave our child unattended for more than few seconds.

I think it’s so different depending on the child! My son wasn’t a climber. But my daughter is so we have to babyproof differently with her. But so many things they say you need, you really don’t!

We live in a 2 bedroom apartment with like zero storage so it’s impossible to baby proof every area. What we do is fence off the living room which is baby proofed, then whenever we open up the gate and our daughter cruises around we know to be extra cautious and watchful. We rent so many baby proofing things, like cabinet latches (which I am trying to avoid getting at all cost), would damage property that doesn’t belong to us so we don’t use it, just watch watch watch baby when she’s out of fenced area most carefully.

We have a lot of furniture that even I cannot tip over if I tried. We rent, so anchoring everything is not a good option.

Omg I just received all my packages from amazon and was going to baby proof my house this weekend! I like your perspective! My baby is already crawling and standing up using help, so it’s time! I bought more things than what you mentioned. I imagine securing furniture and TVs is essential, also hiding wiring from TV must be done too, because my baby crawls right to it immediately!

I did exactly what you did with the lower cabinets. We have hair ties but that stuff is just mixing bowls, Tupperware, and his stuff just like you! So far we had to give him all our smaller mixing bowls. 😂 That said, now he has a make shift kitchen in his playroom.

Great video, I agree with everything. You baby proof things as needed. I have a 1yr old (2nd kid) and I just put a lock on the cabinet in the bathroom because he became interested in it. I also think it's good to teach them no if you can. No you can't go in the cupboards and then you close the cupboards and they learn. Can't always do that though because it will drive you crazy lol.

Here we bought some baby proofing itens but were too lazy to put them in place until we had to, hehe. One day my 1yo opened a kitchen cabinet and pulled 5 little glass bowls, which shattered. My husband and I were right there, it happened in a matter of seconds! Luckily he wasn't injured, and after I cleaned the mess we made sure to lock all our cabinets. We use the magnet locks mostly, but where it's not possible we use the latch ones. They work fine for us, never had to replace them! In order to remove them without leaving the glue, you have to heat it with a hair dryer for a couple of minutes, it comes right off! Our furniture is all custom made, so it's all attached to the walls, so that's not an issue for us. The corner bumps are a nuisance, my son keeps removing them, he finds it hilarious. I haven't baby proofed the toilet, but I'm thinking about it, because my son is a pro at lifting the seat.

I agree completely with your take on this, our experience was the same. Honestly the consultant has a job to give you as much info as possible, if you ignore some of it and baby gets hurt they could be to blame, but most of their tips will never be needed. As an aside: Love your top! Where is it from?

Thanks for sharing! I think everyone needs to do a little bit of babyproofing in their home. How much, where, & when will be determined by each person. They should consider what’s in their home and what their child is into. The baby proofing needs will change from child to child and what phase they are in. What you did or didn’t baby proof with your 1st child might not be the same for each child thereafter. Baby proofing products also make for great baby shower gifts especially if you present them in a basket. Good luck to everyone out there who is trying to make their home safe for each kid🙂

Great tips. I didn’t want to deal with the baby proof consultant who would have definitely told me to get rid of my glass coffee table. We made great use of those silicone or soft corner caps and edge barriers/bumpers. I feel you regarding that 3M residue. We got rid of the stair gates earlier since we have carpet on the stairs and my boy is a pro on the stairs. Overall, I just try my best to keep an eye on him.

Totally agree Susan I have two toddlers and they barely needed any baby proofing , I put a baby gate on our steps, and plastic covers on the outlets and one cabinet clip on the cleaner cabinet but otherwise we didn’t need to do anything else. Like you said just put things outta reach they can’t have and the rest is ok plus like you said I’m with them all the time and when I go somewhere they follow me haha so they really aren’t alone at all. With the bathroom 🚽 all I had to do was close the door 🚪 and it wasn’t an issue playing in the toilet so like you said just watch your kid and when you see there’s an issue just fix it then instead of driving yourself nuts baby proofing everything and it just being an annoyance to you when you may not of even had to do it in the first place cause your baby may not care 🤷🏼‍♀️

We are kind of in the middle of this. Our 9 month old is constantly cruising around on furniture and climbing everywhere. We have yet to babyproof our house maybe the only thing we did is we removed the coffee table cause I didn't care for it that much (cheap Ikea one anyway). It can go back when he's a little older. I keep the bathroom door closed and the kitchen is off limits as well and that is where I put our dog's bowls. Overall my biggest issue is keeping the floors squeaky clean (my long hair is constantly everywhere and I don't know how but no matter how long I vacuum there is always another piece of lint or something there when I turn the vacuum off 😂)
@way108
@way108 5 жыл бұрын
Yeah regarding the kitchen stuff, I'd do the same thing too. Kept some old Tupperware and old ladles, spatulas etc... she'd just play with those while I cook. Also kids aren't THAT stupid. Sometimes when you let them explore without monitoring they learn to be cautious. But then this is just me. Maybe there are some kids who need a fully baby proof environment based on their age and temperament.

For a little added context, children are top heavy until their bodies become more proportionate to their heads when they're around 6 years old. So that's one of the main contributing factors for the technical risks of them falling over the railings, in the toilet, out of the crib, etc

Wow that professional baby proofer seemed more like she was trying to give the absolute worse case scenarios to the extreme. My mother had 5 children. She didn't baby proof at all. We had a gas stove/range. And one of my older brothers had this adorable little girl who'd spend time with me during the week because her father worked and her mother worked and also went to school. So my mother and I had her the whole time on week days. I was 17 and taught her not not go near the stove because it was hot. I remember when she started walking and talking. I was cooking dinner and she came into the kitchen and stood across the room from me and pointed and said "hot". Children are adorable and a gift from God. But they're also quite smart. They pick up on things quickly. I think that in regards to what you and don't baby proof depends on the parents and the child. So I agree with Susan in that you'll know what needs to be baby proofed and what doesn't. But those sliding electrical outlets and the ones with the covers are all good ideas! Also pregnancy looks good on you Susan! You definitely have a glow!
