Bach - Aus tiefer Not schrei ich zu dir BWV 687 - Smits | Netherlands Bach Society

Between the humility of this small-scale version of 'Aus tiefer Not schrei ich zu dir', performed by Reitze Smits for All of Bach, and the grandeur of Bach’s six-part arrangement of this chorale (BWV 686) is a world of difference. The chorale ‘Aus tiefer Not schrei ich zu dir’ (Out of the depths I cry to you O Lord) is one of the psalms from the Office for the Dead. The words of the psalm have often been set to the most beautiful music. In this arrangement of the chorale, it seems as if Bach is siding with vulnerable mankind, creeping closer, as it were, to God’s throne, daring only to hope and expecting nothing.

Sublime... Reminds me of the time when I worked in Old Montreal. I regularly found refuge in Notre Dame Cathedral for some quiet reflection... . Often the magnificent organ would be playing these beautiful pieces.... intimate, reflective moments between a person and his/her God. Thank you NBS.

This hymn melody is modal: Phrygian, Mode 3, Mi to mi and the final note is harmonised with a Tierce de Picardie, which makes the chord sound to our tonal ears as the dominant of the minor mode giving us the impression of an imperfect cadence.
