Did you know that Bach's chorale cantata is based on Martin Luther's hymn, which is also a paraphrase of Psalm 130. What do you think of the Jussen Brothers interpretation of the piece?

A bit more abstract, which I suppose fits Bach. But nothing beats a good choral piece.

Outstanding. My favourite among Luther's melodies. The Phrygian mode conveys for us some kind of uncanniness, perhaps suitable for the anguish expressed in the beginning of the psalm.

They play , as they always do, with great respect for the music. We must also realise that they did, in fact, play a transcription by Kurtag. It changes the mood of the chorale. E.g. the bass is more emphasized than in Bachs original. As if Kurtag wanted to incorporate the impressive double pedal of Bachs large version of Aus Tiefer Not. Played on the organ, the so-called "little version" of the choral from Clavierūbung III, it sounds lighter then Kurtags version. It is impressive how the Jussen brothers manage not to over emphasize the bass.

As already mentioned below, these two pianists rediscover the central role spirituality should always assume in most of J. S. Bach's work, an aspect very much neglected nowadays. Played by Lucas and Arthur Jussen, this is the first time I perceive the beauty of this particular composition (BWV 687). I hope the two will bestow much more J. S. Bach upon us from now on into the future! Glorious!

I’m very uncomfortable watching them play but they make this sound beautiful so I guess it cancels out. I’m still baffled on why they are literally rubbing elbows with each other, wouldn’t one on the other side be better for their theatrics and better symbolize a choral hymn versus modal harmonies? Just me? Alright I guess...

This arrangement was written by Kurtag for him and his wife Marta to play aide by side at an upright. I agree there is a queasy quality to this when it transferred to two brothers in such ecstasy in such close proximity.
