Ensemble Concerto Köln (led by violinist Evgeny Sviridov), traverso player Cordula Breuer and harpsichord player Wiebke Weidans perform the 'Brandenburg Concerto No. 5' by Johann Sebastian Bach in Het Concertbouw in Amsterdam. The concert ends with a playful encore: Bach's 'Badinerie'.

Bach explores the art of sound dialogue to the fullest. There is a wealth of rhythmic, harmonic and timbre contrasts. It seems that Bach wanted to condense in these series of Brandenburger concerts everything that was achieved about the concert style.

wow, Sviridov's phrasing is absolutely stunning. Scherf and Weidanz play a tasteful continuo and Weidanz cadenza is on point (maybe too much rubati). Best live performance of Brandenburg 5 IMHO.

For me such a breathless tempo in the opening allegro is a misjudgment. The music can't get all the way out when it's pushed this hard.

Of course...it is even necessary...we rather say playing unevenly ..in the case of the cadence it is an espression of a free-like Improvisation

Not only was Rubato allowed (borrowing note values and decreasing the lengths of notes after a preceding dotted note, it was understood and expected. Notes inequales of the French practice was admired by the Francophile Germans.

Baroque musical practices were freer than classical and romantic practices. Whoever told you rubato wasn't allowed must have not read anything about baroque music since the 1960s or 1970s.

She personalizes it beautifully and makes music of it, rather than just mechanically playing a bunch of notes in perfect timing! This is what musical artists were and are expected to do.
