The critics were ecstatic; the release broke all records and is still considered one of the ten most significant and successful classical recordings of all time. However, we noticed that many people were turning to the 1981 recording because of the better sound quality. We also noticed that many people do not know the 1959 (38:33) concert version. I do believe we have come across the first meme in all of history. If you don't understand what I mean, look at the picture of Glenn Gould and see the captions shown above: the first image says "1955 studio", and Gould absolutely loved recording, so he is actually smiling in the picture. See the picture to the right now - "1959 live". The pianist hated live performances, so you see, he is frowning... this is a rather satirical comparison of two photos. 😁

But they are the real covers of the recordings. Was just done on purpose by these people of the remastering. I guess they knew Gould didn't like live performances. But, in any case, why you say the first one??? it wouldn't be the first one, of course, is it?!!!!?????

I've listened to two or three remasters of the 1955 recording; this is hands down the best one I have ever heard. I don't know how you did it, but it sounds like it was recorded as if Stereo and Dolby existed at the time. Unbelievable work. I have purchased the recording on the strength of this video. Well done.

@@Daniel.W.Bridge Yes, link in the description. More tape hiss than I expected; I reckon the KZbin compression algorithm crops some ends of the dynamic range, I'm not sure. But I compared it to the original 1955 recording and the snr was probably double.

Glenn Gould "plays Bach,” wrote the distinguished music teacher and critic, Professor Heinrich Neuhaus, “as if he were on of the pupils of the Thomaskirche cantor, sharing his meals with him in the refectory and blowing the organ when his teacher played for his parishioners… The music seems to speak through his playing; the composer has been dead long since but his music is alive today and it will live long ... The 1955 recording is truly legendary. I saw a journalist in a T-shirt with "Goldberg variations 1955 recording" written on it. Gould broke into popular culture with this recording, it's among the most famous ones in the history of classical music.

This first version is undoubtedly virtuoso while musically exceptional, especially considering the very young artist playing it. However, the 1981 version is by far superior for anyone familiar with the work. Not that much for the sound quality, but for the years of maturation in Gould's brilliant mind. In 1954, he plays with his heart and fingers, in 1981, he plays with his brain and soul after a whole life living with Bach.
@emilechandellier60010 ай бұрын
I think i’m quite familiar with the work and I disagree with "by far superior", it’s been 2 years I practice it and since I’m child my ultimate goal are Variation Golberg, I think as a cycle the 1955 recording is really more understable for our little brain of humain being, I don’t see the fast tempi like a way to show of, but to make understand the big structure in long term. There is beautiful variations in 81 version, both version are unique and incredible either way, but I personally much prefer to listen the 55. I think people listen Bach wich too much verticality not considering the piece with his own time, as a big time structure. It make Bach like a "out of time" thing and I don’t think this mystical way of thinking help to feel the great genius of Bach. Either way If my brain couldn’t understand the 81 version althought I also played every pieces of the WTC and I’m at the highest level of theoritical studies in Paris Conservatoire, so I really wonder : Who can listen all the 81 version and stay focus on each lines wich is so singing and geniusly writen ? This list must be very small I think. Still maybe I’m not as much intelligent to appreciate 81 version but I think we have to stay humble and remember than music in every culture is basically rythm (dance) and melody (sing) more the melody is long, more the rythm is non pulsed, and less we can have a sensitive experience of music.

@molocious3 жыл бұрын
I agree. I like the live 1959 recording even better than the studio. Even though Gould hated to admit it, you can hear how the presence of an audience made his performance explicitly pedagogical, for example, in bringing out the ground bass of the aria, or emphasizing the descending chromatic bass in the central lamentation of the arioso variation, so that, despite some egregiously misplaced ornamentation and some occasional key-splitting (finger landing between the piano keys instead of squarely on the center of the key), it is a performance possessed of the eloquence of an inspired friend talking about life.

I prefer this to the last recordings which are really slowed down. Of course it's all stupendous stuff and I'm musically illiterate to top things. However, I've been listening for the last half century. Apart from Nikolaevna, nobody seems to come close. Richter heard Gould In Moscow and was still applauding when everyone had left the concert hall. Nor did he attempt to record this masterpiece. Apparently, he said he could play the Goldberg Variations just as well but it would take him thirty years... Ah, the modesty of giants!

@@canman5060 Oh, I don't need reminding. I've been a Gould admirer since I was 12 or 13 when I first heard the 1955 studio recording on the original Columbia Records LP. That must've been in 1971. I was very excited and astonished and I couldn't wait to tell my piano teacher. As it turned out, he knew all about Gould since the 1950s and was an admirer too. However, I know what you mean about dislike of Gould's innovative approach. My piano teacher in college was not a fan and most of my friends aren't either. For many years I felt a little lonely in my love of Gould, but now it seems that time has vindicated my taste for his realizations!

I have always preferred his live recording of these, but wonder if it was not a usual mistake by the enthusiastic kid with toys in the form of plug ins to put so much reverb into the "remastering". I agree, Gould would prefer a much more of a purist approach. There is no going back, sadly once the reverb has been applied. I have actually made this error in judgment before and know the temptation. Still the motive is good and the performance inspirational by Gould. May he live on in the spirit of all these who are passionate about his work and talent. Now go and find the original recording of the live performance! Sony released it on CD and there are lots out there.
