@@MitchBoucherComposer He was amazing. My favorite composer. I looked at the score for this chorale. Looks like an F minor-major 7 chord to me, in a chorale that's in G major. Pretty wild chord for a standard church chorale. Although, no Bach chorales are truly "standard." I can only imagine what listeners thought upon hearing this for the first time at church!

The Master of eternal music creates a simple choral and makes it an outstanding work of art. I think Mozart would have given his right hand for composing such a piece. But he was not able to. Look at those simple Bach-chorals like "Wenn ich einmal soll scheiden" or "Wachet auf, ruft uns die Stimme". Milestones of european music.

"There is the music of Johann Sebastian Bach. Therefore there must be a God." - Peter Kreeft
@MrAristaeus4 жыл бұрын
I adore the music of J.S. Bach, but, even with every best intention, this comment is absurd. With respect, the music of Johann Sebastian Bach proves his own genius, and neither proves or disproves the existence of a God.
@ck15784 жыл бұрын
Kreeft said you either get it or you don't. It is a subjective approach to a philosophical issue. As an evolved primate I see this as a very fulfilling subjective argument. The genius is there and can naturally be explained, but why? Why do we humans have this need for such nonessentials? And why are there only a few of this level? Is there not, at least a Platonic Ideal that we are aiming at? I think this is this anything but absurd, and goes to the core of who we are as humans. Such genius points to something that led to a leap from a laws of the jungle. - not that many of us do not struggle with such instinctual forces everyday. But, why?

@dominicestebanrice7460 Жыл бұрын
Why? Don't ask why, just how. What does asking why someone strives like JSB for perfection in music say about why someone like Napoleon, Hitler or Putin strives for the grotesque? Human capabilities & characteristics exist on a bell curve and prove nothing about the existence of God; equating God with human genius fails completely on every level.

Beautifully sung, and an interesting choice to add theorbo accompaniment. It may have been more appropriate to substitute a gallichon (mandora) instead, since this version of the lute was known to be present and in use by Bach and his colleagues, while the theorbo was not. It's a good thing the chorale is so short though, because my back hurts just seeing the S-curve contortion the player forms when holding the instrument in that very novel manner. Ouch.
@wapolo19744 жыл бұрын
That’s quite interesting! Was the theorbo not used at all in Germany? I’m guessing that the thirteen course lute along with the gallichon were the most commonly played plucked instruments at that time.
@Mignarda4 жыл бұрын
@@wapolo1974 There is scant evidence of the theorbo (as we know it) played in the German states during Bach's era, and any mention at all likely referenced a different instrument than the one we are accustomed to seeing today. Weiss is said to have invented the "German theorbo" which is tuned intervallically the same as the d-minor baroque lute, only presumably at a lower pitch. Yes, apparently the gallichon was the preferred instrument for accompanying in Bach's era, and this instrument was found in the inventory of instruments at the Thomasschule Leipzig. The theorbo was not. I don't like to detract from this beautiful performance of Bach's chorale setting, but you must understand that most of today's recreations of baroque music miss the mark by a mile, mostly due to the time-sucking inconvenience of research into performance details, and the modern tendency to recreate the past according to how we would wish it to be.
@jlaurson3 жыл бұрын
The theorbo is the HIPster's a-historical (but adorable) gimmick for Bach performances and has been for almost two decades. Its long neck sticking out of pits across the lands signalling: We're serious about this. :-)
