DANKE!

What a dynamic introduction...this classic work is captivating to the soul and mind! The synchronisation of the orchestra, choral and soloists have a perfect balance. The opening of the choral is a good example. The oboes, french horns and string instruments must not overcome the voices. The choral entrance is forceful yet the instrumental musical tones are audible and well-balanced. The conductor, N. Harnoncourt, I know, keeps a delicate balance throughout the performance. His superior employment of dynamics, articulation, expressiveness and phrasing shows passion and fire. The impressive performance of the young boy soloist is magnificent, he can present a beautiful long repertoire with his angelic voice. 'Weihnachts-Oratorium' enlightens the Xmas spirit each December. Graceful, charming and harmonious is the sound of Bach's superb composition. PEACE AND SERENE SEASON GREETINGS!

Gracias Thanasis Baltas! Excelentes intérpretes: Director maestro Nikolaus Harnoncourt, Concentus Musicus Wien, Peter Schreier - Tenor, Robert Holl - Bass, los niños solistas Soloists of the Tolzer Knabenchor, Chorusmaster: Gerhard Schmidt-Gaden.

I sang this work with the Laurel (MD) Oratorio Society (Now the Central Msrylsnd Chorale) in 1994. The Cantata No. 4 was my favorite "Fallt mitt Danken, Fallt mitt Loben," etc. What I remember about the echo, I still rememher and treasure. The soprano for the whole work was Susan Bender, who sang with the U.S. Navy Sea Chanters and who was a 1986 Met Regional winner (National Art Gallery, Washington, DC. I happened to attend that particular one. Actually, Susan was co-winner with Gordon Hawkins, who still sings with the Met). Her echo was a young woman chorister, Polly Edmonds, daughter of the conductor. I love this performance of just a great oratorio and I feel so blessed to have been able to sing it.

This performance has its strengths and weaknesses. I must say one case of "historically informed" carried too far was to put a boy soprano opposite Peter Schreier (by many accounts the greatest tenor of all time with that genre) with the inherent imbalance in such a matchup. While "historically informed" has its place, one important aspect of Bach is his versatility with all the zillions of different ways his music has been performed.
