Just when I thought I'd heard all Bach's miraculous works. I then discover this gem. When you look at the complexity of his works, the number of works & their perfection. Its seems almost inconceivable how he could have found time to write them down, let alone think them up. When Wagner wrote that Bach was the most stupendous miracle in all music, he was making an understatement. He is the most stupendous miracle we know of so far in the universe

RV 580 originally for 4 violins, strings and continuo. Bach was influenced by Vivaldi. They both are the greatest composers. You still are right, it's not just unbelievable he was this productive, he also had 20 children of which some died, composed on a small place, he had barely money to feed his family, he was a teacher and composed for the church too every week, ... not only quantitity, but also godly quality. Thats still not all... There is a nice movie about Bachs life from the DDR production in Germany. Sadly no english subtitles. Its about 4 to 7 hours of material describing a lot about Bachs life.

Superb playing Pascale Mélis, and good registration too to make all this happen - as much a part of playing as the actual playing I think. My old music teacher used to diss this work, saying the 4 harpsichords made the whole thing sound like birds twittering! I love the passage at 1:00 where the key changes through that great baroque technique of slowly dropping down to the dominant (or other key, often minor). It was mastered by Bach of course, to make something less clinical, less cliched and more emotional. And, with organ music easily sounding crowded or over-played within the natural reverberation of the sound space, it still sounded 'crisp', with the melody clearly delineated, not drowned out in the huge amorphous noise an organ can make in a big church.

I'd heard this concerto in its original Vivaldi concerto for four violins, and Bach's own transcription for four harpsichord, but never in solo organ. This was a treat! Accuracy, great articulation, passion, and orchestration (stop selection) amounts to virtuosity! I could hear everything. Kudos. That A minor chord at the end of the first movement is almost sacrilegious. One expects a Picardy third there! But I love it!

@@danfoster6542 By transposing a violin quadruple concerto Bach changed the character of the piece almost completely and made it his own. Since I "hear" this concerto/movement as Bach's music and since Bach DOES in fact (and much more often than Vivaldi) end on Pic. 3rd, and in light of the length and predominance of minor harmonies in the movement, I expected to hear an A chord or at least an A-E fifth interval at the end. I don't think your theory/harmony teacher taught you the most important thing about music: that it is all subjective!

It's so beautiful because you just hold your breath - will it or will it not? The best for me is the end of the Chaconne, where there is no 3rd and one can hear what they want (it's definitely a Maj 3rd for me)

Dislikers are either jealous or rap crap lovers with no music taste whatsoever. A person who lived at the time of Bach, told how he passed by a church hearing some out of this world organ piece being played. He concluded it must be either a heavenly angel playing or Bach. Pascale Mélis is a combination of both. All praise in sharing this awesone video. A true gift to the world of classical music.

Among other talents, Bach was a great transcriber. This is his transcription of a concerto for four violins by Vivaldi, originally in b minor, as is the case with Bach's other transcription of this concerto, also in a minor, for four harpsichords. This is Vivaldi's Opus 3, No.10. Bach also transcribed a number of other Vivaldi concertos for organ as well, just as magnificent as this one.
