There's a relentless momentum in the prelude and an unremitting harmonic anchor-point in the minor key which gives the prelude a dramatic and almost tragic quality. The organo pieno registration is totally appropriate for sustaining this drama. As for the fugue, wow! What can one say other than if you want an insight into the mind of Bach, here it is: fugal writing of mind-boggling virtuosity and rising betond the conventional prelude-and-fugue pairing to heights of symphony majesty. I feel whsn listening to this that Bach is at the apex of his creative genius in a way not unlike Beethoven in his last string quartets. Thank you from the heart for this beautiful rendering of this masterpiece.

been to 2 concerts here recently and man this organ has such a dynamic range in terms of volume and sound timbre. from the 2 flutes on the rugwerk and hoofdwerk to the very filling prestant chorus which as sietze has shown can support a service no problems to the even greater mixture plenum with the reeds. cannot wait to play this sampleset when it comes out on Sweelinq :)

Wow - this is so FAB..... paced just right to capture the electricity in this piece, but not too fast to miss the grandeur and big gestures that make it interesting to listen to! Bravo Maestro! The bravado of the prelude and the downright "oddness" of the fugue with all its amazing twists and turns of texture, rhythm and harmony all so beautifully captured. It's a bit unhinged, but can work! For me - as a player and listener - sometimes the Wedge can seem a bit long...... not here! Exciting from start to finish.... thank you 🙏

Bach would be ridiculous, if it were not first terrifying in the depths of what he found in his meditations. I speak as a casual, but perplexed listener… Yes, because who does not realize that Bach prayed more than he composed, or rather, composed himself to God more than he composed musical pieces -- this residual superabundance of his most intimate devotion. If there is musical sanctity, here is the angel among the choir of men.

Bach’s greatest organ Prelude & Fugue, beautifully played. I prefer to hear the piece played with contrasting manual changes in the secondary chromatic sections of the Prelude and the toccata sections of the Fugue. The all-full-organ-all-the-time approach can be a little tiresome for the ears.

@markbell99732 ай бұрын
I'ma trynna: From Victorian-ish England, this fugue got the nickname "The Wedge." The sobriquet spread quickly to the rest of the anglophone world and has stuck ever since. The only explanation for this choice of words, "Wedge " I have ever read or heard is quite anecdotal, if not the stuff of legend: the name is supposed to refer to the structure of the fugue subject: its stepward ascent, and then at a definite turning point its more syntagmatic (stepwise+adjacent descent). So far a rather dull ("And so?") musicalogical observation. However the "Romantic" consciousness represented by, e.g., Byron, Goethe, Hugo et al. aimed to see more meaning in things and people than Enlightenment rationality (Hume, Kant, Descartes) allowed for. And so? Although it is an academic high heresy to map, especially, anything "Romantic" onto Bach retroactively, we who grew up in a more rural setting look back on the nicknames given to various townspeople with a smile. Someone pegged this certain someone with a nickname that totally applied--for life--to the town rascal or hero or clown, etc. This puzzling fugue, then, gets the endearing nickname of "The Wedge," which had to have started somewhere in within the inteligentsia. But the word spread, quickly, and sticks to this day. To the point: Stuff happens. Both parents die during a boy's early adolescence. Your back is to the wall. The extended family takes up the slack and a pretty decent family life ensues. They take up a little collection for Seb after one of the uncles assures that J.S. has good instruction and free room and board at the noble Court at Lüneborg. JSB hikes on pretty beaten paths hmm 200 miles up north to be a boy soprano in the Court Church choir. Johann gets robbed on the way. A 5 Thaler gold coin the uncles, aunts, cousins had scraped together for the journey and some pin money. Back against the wall, then the best protection and mentoring possible by Georg Böhm when the mid-adolescent Jonny arrives in Lüneburg. And their are at least two more such grave "wedge" situations to follow in Bach's life. And several more minor ones. You're minding your own business. Calamatous "back against the wall" short and hella sharp. A longish stretch of added wisdom, contentment, comfort but not riches. A kind of cycle.... And the older Bach set this otherwise "no words" cycle to music. And it takes a player immense talent, stamina, guts to instanciate the score Johann Sebastian Bach left us. Oh yes it does. But the reward is insanely BIG.
