The Inventions and Sinfonias
(BWV 772-801)
This is a music video of the invention in A minor by Johann Sebastian Bach. The Inventions and Sinfonias is a collection of short pieces Bach wrote for the musical education of his young pupils. These are among the finest examples of artistic gems ever written for this purpose, and probably because of this, they became very popular among Bach's pupils and others ever since they were written.
The work comprises fifteen two-part, each named 'inventio', and fifteen three-part pieces, named 'sinfonia'. These two groups of pieces are arranged in an identical fashion-in ascending order by key-so that there is little doubt that Bach's intention was to bring them together as a single work. This is also confirmed by the way they are carefully written in his autograph fair copy penned in 1723. On every facing page of an open volume each piece demonstrates the contrapuntal technique, while, at the same time, explores a wide range of musical expressions using various styles and developing the motives in a logical fashion.
Like the Well-Tempered Clavier, the Inventions and Sinfonias did not appear in print during his lifetime. Nevertheless, it was widely disseminated in manuscript copies even before its first publication in 1801 and ever since the work has been widely used for the teaching of young musicians. At the present time, however, some concerns are expressed frequently regarding its proper use, as to what extent Bach's intentions are being understood correctly. It is sad to discover that the work is often regarded as a dry, technical exercise for the independence of two hands. In order to enjoy the real benefit from this highly renowned teacher, one ought to make every effort to try to understand his music wholeheartedly by searching for Bach's sense of judgement. Only by succeeding with this enquiry, can one learn from this work a universal principle of music, which, in turn, gives us a sense of true appreciation of music as well as encouragement for further study.
The inventions were composed in Köthen; the sinfonias, on the other hand, were probably not finished until the beginning of the Leipzig period. The autograph fair copy is dated 1723.

Short Bio:
Nenad Leonart is a baroque musician on harpsichord and organ based in Switzerland. He was born in Nis (Serbia) and studied ancient music and harpsichord in the University of Arts Zurich (ZHdK). Since last year, he has started his own series of concerts in his home studio and moved into the music video production business.
For these videos, I got inspired - among others - by the Netherlands Bach Society. I have no ties or connections to their organisation whatsoever, although I personally know and also admire several artists performing at the "All of Bach" series. If you want to check out more of my own work, you can do that here:

Especially when pieces that were written in the Baroque era end up being played on a, dare I say, piano. The biting, angry, to the point sound of the harpsichord is unmatched!!!!

Agree with you all. I’ve only played a single manual but it just doesn’t match the virtuoso of a double manual though (I know about its mechanisms). Playing a double manual baroque harpsichord (not revival) is high up on my bucket list.

Beautifully executed and recorded. Gould's supersonic piano version looms large, but the harpsichord is the instrument for Bach when played by a musician of this skill and emotion.

@@LeonartMusic Not at all, the sound is fine. It was just the tempo. I tend to play this one just a shade slower as, on my very modest digital piano, some of the harmonies are more obvious that way. Listening again to this version, I can see it works on that lovely instrument. It was probably my familiarity with other slightly slower interpretations unfairly skewing the experience. You executed it brilliantly and brightly. Sorry if I came across as critical, that was not my intention.
@LeonartMusic
@LeonartMusic 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks for your elaboration! I definitely can see playing it slower and also did on a number of occasions - I‘ve been using these pieces as warm-up exercises. For the recording i wanted to tune up to the max and play them as brilliant as the music is able to support it, hence the tempo decision.

Would Bach have used a harpsichord or a piano in today's world? Did he have a preference? My preference is the elegant, tinny sound of the harpsichord. In today's world, for some reason, it's okay to destroy the beautiful integrity of the harpsichord by playing music that was designed for the harpsichord to be bastardized by the (hold your breath) piano. Yeah, I said it. To hear this invention played on the piano strikes my core. For revenge ( depending on your degree of anger ) I want to hear Chopin, Liszt and keyboard works on harpsichord that were written and designed for the piano. Kind of a revenge (against the man) so to speak. Who's with me? Not that the change of instrument would sound better or worse, but the sole purpose would be to hear the piano world's gasp as if a blasphemous act had been performed. Well, in reverse, that's how I feel about using the piano where it doesn't belong. Just to shake the pillars a little, if you know what I mean. Thank you ladies and gentlemen, our return to the piano will be momentarily................

Bach was something of a technician (an early proponent of equal temprament, for example.) I think today he would have used just about every instrument he knew about; whatever suited the particular piece.
