Hello Cellists,
Let’s talk about the D minor Sarabande and in particular: embellishments.
"I agree with a certain great man’s opinion [guess who?] that, although one taste may be better than another, each contains something good and none is so perfect that it will not endure additions” - C.P.E. Bach
Below is a link to my Bach album and a short reading list with helpful links for studying the Bach cello suites. Please let me know if you have any comments and/or questions, I would love to hear from you. Thank you for watching!!

Thank you so much Inbal! This is super helpful. I’ve also made screenshots of your sheet music so that I can learn your bowing too. Adding the extra base notes is a great idea for practicing and has been fun to play!

You just read my mind everytime! I was thinking about two days ago: "Would be great if Inbal uploaded her insights on the 2nd Suite's Sarabande" and here it is! When you uploaded the 3rd Suite's Allemande it was the same. Thank you for such invaluable information!

Hi Inbal - Thanks again for a great tutorial. 2 Questions: 1) What is your decision making process for NOT using 4th position in bar 13? Do you ever consider it it for either one of the repeats? Does a wolf factor in at all? 2) Have you done Sarabande 4 yet (my personal favorite)?

Hi Alan, thanks for your question. I don't use the 4th position in bar 13 because for Bach music in general, I prefer the ringing of the open strings to the more muffled sound of the closed strings. There is a reason why the suites are based on open strings: G, D and C (with the exception of the E flat major suite) . Also, it is easier to sustain the e flat and play the trill alternating with the open "a" then in the forth position, where one is forced to leave the double stop immediately in order to play the trill. Finally, if you play fourth position, the last d in bar 14 will stick out like a sore thumb, haha. unless you play it closed as well, which is awkward in my opinion. Working on the 4th sarabande...stay tuned

Hey Inbal I love watching your videos because of how much emotion and just passion each time you play. So I’m a young cellist and I do take lessons and might be switching to a more strict teacher who is ironically really funny, he is from Poland and he has sold me every cello I have had(2) I went to look at more because I out skilled my last cello and need a cello that will keep up with me. But I’m trying out one and I think I’m going to definitely get it. But anyways I wanted to know how should organize my career because I want to be a doctor but I want to become very good at cello and play for people so what do I do?

Lead a good life. Live without fear. And play Bach every day. The rest works itself out. It sounds like a nonanswer and for that I apologize, but I maintain it's true. Also, minimize your debt and maximize your education. Believe me, adults have an infinity of time that could have been spent practicing or composing or reading or exercising. Take initiative, take responsibility, love your music as Bach loved Christ. When you eventually wake up (or more gently, when you have more experiences), then you begin assembling the glances of the Divine that Bach has given freely to us, everything will take care of itself. Not just in music, but in every aspect of your life. Your cup can be ever-full; Bach will ensure it ne'er runneth over. No shortage of Soviets, atheists, and frenchmen will tell you precisely the same. Watch rostropovich talk about the suites in Russian. It's on KZbin a handful of videos about 10 min each.

Wow viktor, 4 years later I read your comments. I think I will love Christ like Bach loved Christ. No wonder I can feel the Spirit move when I play Suite II.

Would starting the trill in the first bar on f, but not leaning into it, more like a pick up to the e, sound silly as there's already a sixteenth note before the e? Your videos are great. I like the exploring approach, and of course the great playing! Thanks and best wishes!

cello player hi and thanks for watching and for the feedback! For me, if starting from the upper neighbor note, leaning on the f sounds better than not-leaning, exactly because of what you wrote, there is already a sixteenth note before the e.
