When I was very young, maybe 6 or 7, I had a Disney, or maybe it was Fischer-Price record player, and a set of the Brandenburg concertos on vinyl. For whatever reason #3 has always been my favorite since then, I would listen to it over and over again. I'm in my 40s now and have heard this music probably 1000+ plus times. Just listened to it 4 more times before writing this. Never seems to get old for me.

Richter adds a sense of power, weight, urgency and ENERGY to Bach. His instruments are not historically correct, and apparently the concertos are supposed to be much slower, filled with random jarring rubato so you can't get into a groove, and vastly smaller than the used by Richter and the Munchener Barackorchester. However, I find most "historically informed performances" of Bach to be boring, irritating intellectual jerk-off fests where points are kept on paper by people with large textbooks at hand.

You know what, I wonder what dictates that. This performance utilizes a lot more instruments than the other live versions I've been able to find on KZbin. That might be why. It's just got such a full sound, almost too full. For me, the Freiburger Barockorchester has to be my favorite. I think that's only because they play it the fastest, lol. Only about 11 people playing there, while the Richter version has like, 20+ performers. Not to mention a Richard Nixon look alike. :P

I agree that this is one of the best, if not THE best. BUT....look up the Apollo's Fire version. It is played in A420 rather than A440, and on period instruments. And, most importantly, not double voiced (as it was scored). You might like it better.

@@justinnoble6506Thanks for the suggestion. Apollo's Fire at 420 on baroque instruments sounds better, but I didn't like the way they dragged out some of the chords to give them an accent. Also, didn't like how they just ran straight into the third movement without so much as a pause.

You are ridiculously right. I used to watch this dvd every day in my early twenties. I knew every camera move by heart... Karl Richter is literally a beast on keyboard. After that I went to Leonhardt / Kuijkens but it was really hard to change.
@MARTIN2011993 жыл бұрын
@@caballerodroopy boring? Your comment about the 6th Brandenburg Concerto Is simply put ridiculous. There's a canonic style first movement, a deep and moving second movement and a soothing and comforting third movement. All of that achieved without violins. That's a miracle. +David Edwards i actually think the less-than-optimal sound quality boosts the performance
@thomaswilliams95708 жыл бұрын
+David Edwards This is off the charts high quality, especially considering that it was recorded in 1970. Today, we can enjoy this and appreciate its beauty. Only the Germans could deliver such a high quality video and sound 46 years ago. I can't picture any other first world nation producing this in 1970. Even by our 2016 standards, this is awesome. It is a gift to watch these artisans produce great music for the soul.

+lakerman49 Can you explain that comment about the less-than-optimal sound quality boosting the performance?
@lakerman498 жыл бұрын
I mean that the less-than-optimal quality (ie the little static) hides the small subtle mistakes of the musicians, like an unclear stop, a kick, or a slightly out of tune note, nonetheless, this is as close to perfection musicians can get.

And after each one, the director asked everyone if they'd liked to do another take, and each time ALL the musicians were like 'HELLS YES!'.
