Casals discovered and promoted Bach suites for solo cello. He did not rush into playing in public; he spent more than three decades studying and penetrating the complexities of the music. He wanted to master the music nuances and mysteries before playing the suites in public. I first discovered the suites through Ingmar Bergman's movie Cries and Whispers, where the sarabande of the 5th suite plays a central dramatic role. I first liked best the recording of Pierre Fournier, and later Yo Yo ma. The first time I heard the recording of the suites by Casals I found his rendering dry and austere, I did not really like it. With time, and learning more about Bach and different interpreters, I changed my preferences. I came to value more the respect for the written score, being the best renderings those that did not try to "sound" nice or elegant or emotional. The players who let the music emerge from the faithful playing of the notes seem to me the cleanest, more beauteous, more respectful, closer to the essence of the music. I came to love the recordings of Casals and Rostropovich, as the effacement of the interpreter lets the genius of Bach shine. Thanks Classical Music for this excellent remastered version.

Thank you for sharing this background knowledge. I first came to know and love Casal's interpretation as a young man and have always found it to be the most captivating approach. In G. Gould's interpretation of Bach's piano works, the argument is reversed. Gould's egocentric interpretation would undermine Bach's genius and you would hear Gould instead of Bach. In particular, the well-tempered piano counts as unsurpassed in terms of an own approach for me…🪬

@@drBaenz Thanks for your interesting comment. I mostly agree with your analysis. In general, the interpreter should let the music shine through. The composer, not the interpreter, should have the priority. In Casals case, his modesty and respect for Bach were amazing. Nevertheless, Casals interpretation has its own identity, its own life.

Another great Russian was Daniil Shafran especially recordings of 1970-71. Love Musha Mayski his second recording. Most people isn't aware that Casals used to play with gut strings, often old at the point of breaking. I think Bernard Greenhouse went as far as to say that his cello was full of used matches that he used to light his pipe and had slipped through the f-holes, and that he didn't know how he was able to make a sound with that setup. The fact that he still manages to play the suites with such clarity, in a romantic style, with gut strings and all is really remarkable.

I grew up favoring Yo-Yo Ma's interpretation, he gives you this kind, warm, and friendly vibe, which says a lot about Yo-Yo as a person. I didn't like Casals' version as a kid, I though it lacked emotions. Upon revisiting him after almost a decade, I changed my mind. What's brilliant about Bach's work, is that the same piece can be interpreted by different performer and can convey different emotions. Let's take Suite No.6 Sarabande for example, Yo-Yo can make you feel like he's a good friend, comforting you, emphasizing with you; Which is why I listen to it when I'm having a hard time. Casals, on the other hand, feels like a man who's been through everything. In his interpretation, I can feel that he has truly liberated himself. In other words, he is no longer bothered by worldly emotions. Yo Yo Ma's broad emotion spectrum, and Casals' spiritual ascendance, both being present in the same piece of work, the only difference is in interpretation and perception. Same can be said about our reality, nothing is the way it has to be, nothing is fixed, the only thing that's fixed is our own perception and our biases.

@@anshengwang4708 It's not a conclusion, more of an opinion. Conclusions are objective and scientific, and opinions are more subjective. Most anything having to do with the arts in general and music specifically, is by nature subjective. Interesting question, though: what makes good music good and bad music bad? Part o the answer is surprise. Yo-Yo Ma's playing is stale and predictable because it's so pitch- and rhythm-perfect. It's why we prefer a real human voice to an auto-tune voice.

I first heard this recording back in the 70's on our local NPR station, WKSU. I immediately went out and bought the three LP set on Angel with nice box and extensive notes. Later, when cd's became available I bought the two cd set by Yoyo Ma. Shortly later I gave it away and went back to Casals where I have stayed ever since. It's not about which is better. This recording is as much about Casals as it it about Bach. To me it's not the same music when performed by anyone else. Thanks for cleaning it up. That is nice but I'd still love Casals and Bach over any other version. Beautiful.

Thank you very much for uploading this, with all the hiss I remember from the rerelease, on vinyl, that I grew up with. Casals' reading of this is still, somehow, wryly definitive. The emotional content he invests in it is, Sure, Fine, subjective. But regarding that, I like to think that a consensus was in play between the performer and the composer. You might look at how the experience of Casals, as a political refugee from fascist Spain, compares to that of Bach, growing up, near-literally, in the ruins of the Thirty Years' War. We know that Bach personally owned a 'cello. One can imagine him playing the more pathos-laden movements, in the moments he had to himself, as a form of self-therapy. Casals Nails this.

Go to this in KZbin: It's Pablo Casals playing the six Bach cello suites. It sounds so much better than this here audio does. So good that it has me wondering if it's fake. Somebody please explain.

I agree. It is the same recording but this remastering does not sound very natural.

Reminds me of my father on the piano so much talent and technique but where is the heart? If I were recuperating I would not go to Bach for restoration! A master, yes. But for the heart I’d prefer the romantics!

Maybe, but the romantics came a century after Bach. Then...

Sounds great! The sound of the cello has wonderful bite and presence compared to other remasterings I've heard, including the one you've linked at Amazon. I'd appreciate it if you'd post details on when this remastering was done and by whom. Thanks.

Thanks, Gary. I did see that, but when I listened to the sample of that recording on the Amazon website, I found its sound to be considerably less robust and rich than what I'm hearing here. That's why I asked for details on when and by whom the remastering was done so that I could be sure of looking for the version presented here..

Thanks much for the clarification, Gary. It blows me away that he (or she) was able to achieve such a rich, full sound with Casals' 80-year old recording. I thought the pinnacle of modern reproduction of historic works was from Pristine in the UK, but based on a quick listen to the sound sample of the Casals Bach Suites available on their website, this version is clearly superior. So I must admit to being disappointed this version is not available for purchase.

John H Right Gary. This remastering was made especially for our youtube channel by our AB technician. But if you take the EMI version, it is already very good but there is a better presence here. On cd the first edition EMI ANGEL is the best.

glad for the posting , but wondering what the background "hiss" is....doesn't sound like tape or L.P. noise.....i am not an engineer , but note only that it's more obtrusive as it rises and falls ,irritating , in fact not trying to be a bitch , just that F.M./LP/& tape hiss is ignored after a few minutes , whereas this calls attn. to itself by constant volume change.... ? ? ?

gayland barney Yes the analog sound of vinyl and the digital sound of the cd are really different. This new mastering is made from the first digital version EMI ANGEL.

Yikes considering he recorded these under the duress of the Spanish gov meltdown and breaking out of world war II , 1930s, this is phenomenal discipline and grace under terror.

Here is a perfect example of fame and celebrity far exceeding merit. Casals appears to lack any sense of dynamics and perhaps the remastering is partly to blame. Do not be tempted by hyped Yo Yo Ma recordings either because they lack discipline and obedience to the page which was never forgivable. Sony still makes big money from that particular con trick. Do your own research but if you want what Bach wrote played by a master of the instrument without showing off visit Starker.
