Janos Starker, born in Budapest on July 5, 1924, entered the Budapest Academy of Music at the age of seven (an institution he left without graduating) and gave his first public performance in 1933. Shortly thereafter, he was appointed principal cellist of the Budapest Opera. From 1945 to 1946, he held the same position at the Philharmonic Orchestra. He decided to emigrate and went to Vienna with the intention of entering the Geneva competition. In October 1946, he won the bronze medal. Starker preferred to give up a solo career, which the war had already postponed, and went to Paris where he perfected his art and performed regularly with several string quartets. It was in Paris that he worked on the relationship with the instrument, on the physiology of playing, the distribution of muscular strength in the hand and the art of phrasing and ornamenting. He then summarized the essence of his musical thought and transmuted it into his technique.
In 1948, Starker emigrated to the United States. He was successively principal cellist of the Dallas Orchestra at the invitation of Antal Dorati, then principal cellist of Fritz Reiner at the Metropolitan Opera of New York (1949-1952), then with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra (1953-1958). In 1956, he devoted more time to his solo activity and gave his first concert in London, at the Wigmore Hall. Walter Lege immediately noticed him and offered him an exclusive contract with His Master's Voice. It was with Starker that Lege began his most fruitful collaboration as a cellist. From 1957 until 1959, Starker recorded his first complete Bach Suites for His Master's Voice, a set that he recorded five times during his career. During these four years, Lege recorded most of his repertoire with the Hungarian cellist, a legacy of near perfection. This first recording of the Suites is unanimously regarded as one of the best recordings of this booklet.
From 1958 onwards, Starker, who had given his leave to Fritz Reiner, turned to teaching, without however renouncing concerts (since the eighties, he has assiduously attended the best auditoriums and the most prestigious musical seasons in the world). He created a cello class at Indiana University, Bloomington, which has become famous. His discography, extremely abundant and scattered on many different labels, counts more than eighty references. It is certainly the most important discographic legacy that a cellist has ever left.

My favourite recording of these. I’ve been listening to it for about 45 years. I originally bought the records. When the cds came out they were too expensive. When I visited Budapest I bought them much cheaper at a concert. Then a friends daughter made a mess of them when she borrowed my car. Now they are on KZbin.

He is one of my favorite cellists. I have a box of his Back Cello Suites dated 1965 from Mercury Living Presence, and 4 other of the same label. I have two others he played smaller pieces from Denon dated 1975 and 1978. The Denon, even though they are CDs, are of remarkable sound. Because of the excellent recording, Starker comes out outstanding. I also have CDs of Chicago Symphony Orchestra conducted by Fritz Reiner of late 1950s. This should be the time Starker was the principal cellist in that orchestra.

Thanks Classical Music for tis remastered Century Recording. This rendering by Janos Starker of the six suites for solo violoncello was made during the fifties; the sound is. austere, warm, technically impeccable. After remasterization the suites possess a clear, faultless sound. Starker plays the cello with absolute dominion of the music. His style reminds me of Pau Casals, probably by respecting the score, avoiding adding romantic emotion as some players have done in more recent recordings. Thus, the Bach music has become alive.

Thank you so very much for these remasters. Like many correspondents here, I am of mature years and for some reason was always drawn back to Starker. At the time there were all manner of 'versions' which were pushed forcefully by the record industry -- including the egregious Yo Yo Ma's utter wrecking job -- various delicate French players, some interesting 'HIP' versions, big egos galore and less pushy but musically better soloists from different traditions. The best of these tended to have been desk players and partners in chamber ensembles. Starker was very much the working day musician and perhaps that is why his Bach is coherent, pervasive and shows us decades on from some often badly pressed LPs in the '60s that he played what Bach wrote AS IF he was playing alongside Bach as a music maker. It is as simple as that and the bonus is that the performances always sound as if they were recorded just a few months ago.

My first 2 LPs purchased back in 1960~1961 I was 19 years old at the time and until then, I'd never had any interest in Classical Music. I'd gone to see the film "Jazz on a Summer's Day", a documentary about the 1958 Newport Jazz Festival showing in a little cinema called The Continental opposite Selfridges on Oxford St. About 26 minutes into the film, and completely out of the blue, there is an excerpt of one of the jazz band's bassist, sitting alone in his room playing (what I was later to discover) Bach's Cello Suite No 1 on his cello. I was absolutely smitten by the music, so the very next day, I popped into a record shop on Crawford St, off Baker Street where I worked in an architect's office as a trainee draughtsman. Of course, I had no idea of the title of the piece or the composer, so all I could describe was that it was a piece of classical music played on a cello. The shop-owner more or less guessed straight away that it would probably be one of Bach's cello suites. Those were the days when record shop owners were knowledgeable about the music they sold and were in the business simply for their love of classical music. So I pop into a listening booth and he plays the LP. Fortunately, the piece in the film was Cello Suite No 1, so it's the piece that I hear and recognize straight away. That day, I spent the best part of my weekly salary on the purchase of two LPs of Janos Starker playing the complete suite. It was the day when my love affair with classical music, and Bach in particular, began.

I'm told that like Heifetz, Starker needed to be heard live to be rightfully appreciated. Unfortunately I never had the opportunity to experience either in solo, chamber, or orchestral settings, but I'm told by people who did that they both had a way of moving to the front of the ensemble and surfing over its complicated textures with ease. Neither was well served by attempt of the engineer to...'reign in' or attenuate their copious quantity of sound, which, for its density and breadth, propagates better in a real, populated, acoustic environment and envelope than either an acoustically treated studios, or a mic'd venue typically allows. Microphones don't like...'vitality' or density of sound that never lets up, even though the volume may decrease, because they confuse the one for the other, and with a twist of the wrist, end up reducing the 'actual' abundance of unique quality and character on route to reducing volume. My point is that despite liking the 'play' of both (and I have every record either made to prove it), I apparently tire, in these two cases, of the exaggerated intimacy introduced by 'recorded' sound never listen to an entire performance The...'more polite' French cellists and violinists are better served by the amplification of induced 'consequence'.

Anyone knows? Is this version from Columbia mono records which starts with 33cx label?

A number of years ago I caught the audiophile bug and purchased expensive equipment to listen to high-end digital audio. I learned to love a few recordings, but realized that what makes a good recording is less about bit depth or accurate sound reproduction by the loudspeaker or headphones than it is the recording and mastering process. Today I don't take out the thousand dollar cans and expensive DAC save for listening to a few recordings. These are almost all classical/vocal. This recording ranks up there with Dusty in Memphis for the skill in the mastering process. If you can, get this recording in a lossless format and use good headphones.

Which versions are these? He recorded them many times, for Period, EMI, Mercury, Denon, RCA and perhaps others.

This is ostensibly emi not mercury?

I have this exact record and like it very much, but the disc is worn out and full of noise. Thus, I want another modern CD or something other than Mr Starker's...Could anyone tell me the current standardised performance of the cello suites with the player? I don't have much knowledge in this field. I don't mind about the instrument if it's modern or period.

Warner Classics Legacy has an issue of Starker, full Bach Suites and other pieces/concertos as well. Several disc set. If not Starker, Fournier is my go to

@@karlpage9028 Thanks, I've checked Fournier which sounds milder than Starker to my ears.
