I love you NBS, but I have to pick a bone with you using the French movement titles. While the French dance names are more commonly used, they are not what Bach wrote. This isn't trivial as it significantly shapes interpretation. Sato's performance, especially of the Ciaconna, is so pleasing precisely because it's free and allegro, in keeping with the Italian virtuoso tradition. Most players are misled to play it like a Chaconne (slower, more tragic in the Lullian sense).

@@user-ol1ib1ss2b It sounds great played at different speeds, on different instruments. Find an interpretation that you love and listen to it! I love so many, especially Jean Rondeau on the harpsichord, Hahn's slow recording as a teenager, the brahms left hand piano transcription, all amazing! I personally find the busoni transcription to miss the point entirely but many great pianists love it eg Kissin and Grimaud

Chaconne has never made me cry. Sato's playing is impeccable. I am a pianist, although the violin moves me just as much, if not more. The purity of harmony, tone and articulation, combined with the complexity of the Baroque particulars giving such richness in overtones. I love this piece, however it has never brought me to tears. The broken chord crossings are marvellously played. To watch this in-Person would be a privilege and an honour. Thank you NBS - I am so appreciative you are providing the World with such significance.

There is something beautiful about performing Baroque pieces on period instruments. I have heard many renowned violinists performed the partita such as Heifetz, Perlman, Hahn and yet none of them came close to this. I certainly don't doubt their abilities but none of them performed using proper period instruments. I think baroque music is for me, best performed just like the way it's intended to be; on period instruments.

Actually the modern bow and strings don't do very well for the rolling chords and arpeggios of baroque music, even if they can do more in terms of tone on melodic lines. Baroque bows have light action and lots of space between hair and bow to roll around. Gut E sound is special too.

I think Hahn's first recording of this partita as a teenager is probably my favourite ever recorded sound. It's just transcendent. You know, as a non-musical person, I always thought the violin had this kind of begging, plaintive sound and I always preferred the cello and instruments related to the cello. It’s like the pitch or vibration of the violin like irked me, or something like that. After watching this man perform, however, I finally understand why the violin rocks. Maybe it’s because the surface area is smaller than other stringed instruments and you really have to have a lot of patience and restraint to get it to sound the way this dude does. Amazing talent!

Impeccable performance. ❤️ (Also: Beautiful instrument, working together with the locations acoustics brilliantly.)

after listening to this i can now say that i'm a fan now. 😍 before i was an AC. What a mindblowing way of playing. never seen such a playing. in what key he is playing? pretty sure he's not playing in d minor. also the chaconne ending 🤯🤯 😭😭😭😍😍😍so the gigue and corante. every part is just a perfect interpretation. how come i discover his interpretation so late!

Such expressiveness woven into the arpeggio parts that must start with mechanics.

¡Bravo Maestro! Gracias por ese viaje sonoro al que nos ha llevado con su fantástica interpretación de relaciones cadenciales del discurso musical de Juan Sebastián presente en las sonatas y partitas para violín solo. Saludos cordiales desde Tenerife. España.

A = 415 and gut strings! Magical. Think about it for a moment. Bach being the super genius that he was would have surely left instructions if he wanted pitches higher. And one must be thankful of the acoustics too!
