I love you NBS, but I have to pick a bone with you using the French movement titles. While the French dance names are more commonly used, they are not what Bach wrote. This isn't trivial as it significantly shapes interpretation. Sato's performance, especially of the Ciaconna, is so pleasing precisely because it's free and allegro, in keeping with the Italian virtuoso tradition. Most players are misled to play it like a Chaconne (slower, more tragic in the Lullian sense).

@@user-ol1ib1ss2b It sounds great played at different speeds, on different instruments. Find an interpretation that you love and listen to it! I love so many, especially Jean Rondeau on the harpsichord, Hahn's slow recording as a teenager, the brahms left hand piano transcription, all amazing! I personally find the busoni transcription to miss the point entirely but many great pianists love it eg Kissin and Grimaud

There is something beautiful about performing Baroque pieces on period instruments. I have heard many renowned violinists performed the partita such as Heifetz, Perlman, Hahn and yet none of them came close to this. I certainly don't doubt their abilities but none of them performed using proper period instruments. I think baroque music is for me, best performed just like the way it's intended to be; on period instruments.

Actually the modern bow and strings don't do very well for the rolling chords and arpeggios of baroque music, even if they can do more in terms of tone on melodic lines. Baroque bows have light action and lots of space between hair and bow to roll around. Gut E sound is special too.

I think Hahn's first recording of this partita as a teenager is probably my favourite ever recorded sound. It's just transcendent. It’s like the pitch or vibration of the violin like irked me, or something like that. After watching this man perform, however, I finally understand why the violin rocks. Maybe it’s because the surface area is smaller than other stringed instruments and you really have to have a lot of patience and restraint to get it to sound the way this dude does. Amazing talent!
