“A complete orchestra should be added to this”, wrote Mozart on his copy of Bach’s motet 'Singet dem Herrn', performed here by the Netherlands Bach Society for All of Bach. He was very enthusiastic about the piece, which was performed as a surprise when he visited the Thomasschule in Leipzig, in 1789. At his request, Mozart was given a copy of it. In his account of the event ten years later, Johann Friedrich Rochlitz says that Mozart even shouted “Now there’s something you can learn from!

I read many comments about how this music is heavenly. I find it so human. Bach took the best of humanity, life and the earth and elevated it to absolute beauty. That's why we feel so moved by it. It speaks to our inner human soul. Thank you Maestro Bach ❤.

In 1789, 39 years after Bach's death, Mozart happened to be in Leipzig, and visited the Thomasschule. The boys choir was practicing at the time, so the cantor had them perform this piece for Mozart. Mozart went almost manic with joy, and after poring over the varied instrument and singer scores, Mozart made his famous exclamation "Now this is music from which a man can learn something!", and made Mozart a lifelong devotee of Bach's music.

What an absolutely marvellous performance. Perfect intonation and blend of voices and superb tone. I absolutely love the Dutch as a people (one exception being the matron at my boarding school who confiscated my hot water bottle) and this standard of singing, full of such joy and musical perfection, fills me with such a warm sense of identity and oneness with the singers. The motets have been recorded by some eminent British Ensembles and the Trinity Cambridge version under Marlow is very fine, but cannot compare with the Netherlands 🇳🇱.

Supremely beautiful. I notice a couple of faces in there too both male and female! I'm going for the performance diploma in the new year. The ARSM. I'm really confident with it now. I did a piano masterclass at RAM recently but I got totally too nervous and my hands turned to jelly and I couldn't play at all. I used to be like that when I sang but I'm not now. I sang regularly with Daniela Bechly in her family choir and she's a former opera signer at your level. Singing with her and her mates and old Ben Vonberg Clark finally gave me the confidence at 46. I could win competitions on my day in my youth but I was so inconsistent like when I play at the moment. I think it's just a lack of experience playing 4 hands and in ensemble. I don't care if I make a mistake when I sing now but I'm terrified still as a player. I think if I'm given more masterclasses I could play better I played it perfectly when I warmed up. I couldn't play it for the life of me when he asked me and that is just psychological not musical. I was playing Minuet II from BWV 813 in C Minor. I wanna get back into Aldeburgh Voices if I get my diplomas. the result should be out next week. If I get it it's official professional status as a singer at last. This is a competition entry in Berlin. kzbin.info/www/bejne/fH65YZ1-qbJpmpYsi=rq8seK8hDugo3SFn BWV 933 and Invention Nr.4.

All male singers were very common in the Baroque era. In most performances during that age, the soprano voices were sung by young boys. 18th century baroque had some weird tastes. The castrato singers were probably the most extreme phenomenon of that era.

Mozart visited Leipzig in 1789 and was striked when he heard Bach's " Singet dem Herrn " and asked to see more. He then copied some of the music sheets and even quoted one of Bach's composition ("Ach Gott, vom Himmel sieh darein" BWV2) inside his famous " The magic flute ". My favorite of Bach's six splendid Motets. However, I feel the tempos in the opening and concluding movements are uncomfortably *too fast.* The profuse and highly complex *contrapuntal figuration* becomes a frantic-sounding *blur* at these inappropriate and ill-considered speeds... and we are left feeling not only vaguely *unnerved,* but somehow *cheated* -- We are not allowed to savor and really appreciate all the intricate "goings-on" that the composer labored at. (In Bach's time, "Allegro" simply meant "lightness/cheerfulness," *not* "Presto Furioso.") Nevertheless, a beautiful rendition by a superb ensemble. The wondrous final Fugue is always a great thrill - both to sing and hear. 💥👍
