So true, I believe the design was much more for show than endurance.

I remember getting one brand new as a kid, I believe shortly after Bachmann made the first round of revisions to the design and released them in all sorts of road names beside just the Central Pacific and Union Pacific. When it was new it ran very well, and it pulled four of the "old timer" passenger coaches easily (which I suspect was all the load it was really intended for). Unfortunately I sold it a long time ago. Recently bought another just like it, but it doesn't run as well. I think the traction tires dry out, and the motor just wasn't made with longevity in mind. Even if I found one in an unopened box, I can't imagine spending more than 30 or 40 on it. By modern standards, these are toys at best, and I suspect the high prices are only due to it being out of production.

Several problems with the Bachmann “Old Timer” 4-4-0’s. 1) the locomotive itself is way under weight, the boiler casting should have been made of a heavy white metal. 2) the tender trucks are a total disaster, the soft metal the wheels ride on wear down and allow the wheels to bind, causing the locomotive to loose tractive effort, the design has not been changed. I have several older 2-8-0 2-8-2 and 2-6-2 locomotives, the pilot wheels are mounted in such a way that they can rotate independently without binding. I believe this design could have been modified to work on the tender. 3) the tender could have been designed so the motor could be replaced/ upgraded. Just a few thoughts and opinions.

Nice review, do you think the tender motor could be replaced by one of Kato's powered units? It would just push the engine along.

Is there a good brand of scale sized N scale mid 19th century Americans? I'm assuming brass semi custom, but I've not seen a retail grade loco in N scale for that era that runs and pulls. I do HO mid 19th cen, and there are no really good ones either. You have to take Mantua Generals and heavily rework them mecanically and scratch build details like cabs, boiler wrappers, smokestacks, smokebox fronts, pilots, walkboards, skins for the smooth tender, fuel loads... However they are to scale. The Rivorassi old timers (attractive and detailed) and the Mantua Sierra#3 are all oversized to make their big 1970s motors fit. Oh, drop the caboose on oldtimers unless it is an excursion modern. Cabooses weren't in existence in America till the end of the 1800s. It is mostly a 20th century thing. Surprised me too.

Hi, I hate these 4-4-0 locomotives, But I have no choice as the Atlas won't make the turns on my layout. Plus I don't know of any other companies that make a N Gauge 4-4-0 locos as my layout is Disneyland. Please check out my layout test runs.
