I spotted the odd one out - a Sentinel 4DH (4-wheeled industrial diesel shunter). I can also tell you what the livery is: Crossley Evans Scrap Metal Processors of Shipley, West Yorkshire (I have one, along with a short rake of Bachmann POA/SSAs, which is the type of wagon most commonly seen servicing Crossley Evans - I also happen to live in the area).

North-End Sidings - Model Railway I agree and I think that the class 20 locomotive was designed as a mainline version of the class 08. Hence the longer frame for a bigger more powerful engine. At least I think that’s why the class 20 looks like a longer class 08

My Grandma had just died yesterday, at the time of watching this, but this video has made me happy, because I love the Diesel Class 08, I think it is my favourite Diesel engine, out of all of them. I saw one Class 08 in the Serco livery at Derby once, and I have seen a Class 08 in British Aeronautics livery at Leicester once.

Hello Sam great review as always, one thing that i would like to address in most of your reviews is the composition of mechanisms. You seem to make your bench mark as a modern Hornby chassis with die-cast and brass bearings. This is fine but it effects the price of a model. A single die-cast chassis block with the bearing surface integrated is fine the weight of the locomotive is not enough to cause wear on the axles . If the bearing surface is square this actually reduces the surface area on the axle reducing the load on the motor and saves money when producing the mechanism. Yes its not as good as separate brass bearings but for even up to 0 gauge it will not cause excessive wear to the axles. Its just a different way of doing things. Yes plastic chassis models are different as well but as we have seen they do still last as long in this scale. Also the use of die-cast instead of plastic offers no quality improvement as both are formed by injection moulds so its the quality of the mould is what determines the result. I think it is used to increase the adhesive weight of a model without compromising the room inside the model for DCC chips and sound, which is required these days. Just hoping this may alter your views on bachmann mechanism in future. yours Patrick
@SamsTrains
@SamsTrains 4 жыл бұрын
Thanks for this Patrick! You're right it does effect the price, but given that Bachmann's models usually cost MUCH more than Hornby's, I see no reason why they should fit such poor quality mechanisms. I find axles without proper bearings are filthy each time I come to service them - suggesting that they are indeed wearing. I have found that square bearings produce much more friction too, particularly on larger wheelsets, which leads to more motor strain; a possible reason why I've seen so many Bachmann motor failures! I should point out that all of Bachmann's recent releases have been fitted with brass bearings - which suggests that they too see the merits of them. Thanks for watching - Sam :)

Can confirm Bachmann have updated their class 08, bought a new one the other day and the pickups are on the back of the wheels so easy to clean and the hand rails and steps are fitted, still has the same motor and gearing but mine is fantastic, lovely crawler and can haul allot, got it hooked up to 3 Oxford rail tank carriers at the moment and that’s a heavy train load

I love this class of engine for a couple of reasons: John T. Kenney's illustrations in 'Duck And The Diesel', by the Rev. W. Awdrey - Kenney actually made a machine look completely evil; and secondly, my first model railway engine was a 'Triang' class 08 shunter. Worked beautifully for about three years, until dropped down the stairs by my kid brother. It didn't get up from that, sadly. That is a lovely model, but I've never seen one approaching that level of cleanliness before. They used to work at my local docks - and those were, to an engine, hanging. One, pushing a line of bogie bolsters, showed some people why it's a bad idea not to ask if a railway track is disused, before parking your car on hardstanding with rails running through it. A siding ran into the yard where my late father worked. His company had demolished some old oil storage tanks, and were waiting for the train to remove a load of old pipework. My dad was in his office, and was startled to see three cars sliding sideways into the yard. They were pushed there by the first wagon. The shunter was about 100 yards down the track, and could not see the cars on the track, as there was a shed obscuring his view. The road was blocked by a flag man, but you don't expect muppets to park on a railway track, on hardstanding, out of site. But they did. And paid for it. Shouldn't laugh. 😆😆😆😆😆

Sam, I got a hornby railways one for £90 and holy crap, she runs good. Massive flywheel, 5 pole motor, painted cab, and the other day she assembled a train of 15 coaches in the shunting yard and dragged it uphill to the station where my 80s king class (iv told you about her before) was waiting and if my calculations are correct, that hill would be a 1 in 32 in real life, and the 08 walked away with 15 coaches!

I own models from both Bachmann and Hornbys stable of 08s, I reckon its 6 of one, half a dozen of the other. The Bachmann has the much better mechanism after they upgraded it somewhat around 12-15 years ago, but the Hornby one has a vastly superior detailed look to it. I prefer operating the Bachmann 08 but to look at the Hornby one is eye candy and it runs well enough.

I owned a Bachmann 08! It was converted to DCC and it was a fantastic runner! Cleaning those brushes wasn't too much of a hardship once you know about it. I am torn between the Hornby and Bachmann 08. The rodding on the hornby one seem VERY thin. I think bachmann have put bearings on newer models. Amazing pulling power and control on DCC is absolutely fantastic!

Surprisingly Sam, 20 years old isn't as old as you might think! Model Railroading went through a "Second Renaissance", around 1998... Before then, only KATO and a select few others, had fine scale details included. Then, around 1998, Athearn Trains entered the high end Market with their Genesis Line, Atlas with their Premier Line, Bachmann Spectrum and a few others. These had precision 5 pole Motors, Flywheels and incredible fine details. Including fine Wire Grabirons! .... Before that, nearly everything had molded on Grabirons - even KATO. You had to buy $500++ Brass Locomotives to get the level of detail that this period now had!!! So yes, your little 08 was definitely typical for the time. 😉 Although that LOW Gearing, made yours absolutely superb!! Here in the States, Bachmann Spectrum released an American 2-8-0 Consolidation in 2002, that even today is considered a fine Locomotive! Even if today's Motors and Running Gear are superior. (Yet even today, Bachmann STILL produces that HORRIBLE 2-6-2 Prairie!! Unchanged.)😖 So yeah Mate, you've got a fine little Loco there! 👍👍 Carmine ✈🚂🚙

mmm, by 1998 the German company Brawa were making super fine detail stuff in China. I've got a 22-year-old BR216 loco by them with metal body, NEM coupling, and DCC. Fleischmann stuff made in Germany has always been super detailed. Roco in Austria and metal-bodied Marklin -Trix had metal separately fitted parts long before that era...The Osterthun dot com website is a good source of Ho detail photography
@CarminesRCTipsandTricks
@CarminesRCTipsandTricks 4 жыл бұрын
@@brainlessspudlogic4875 I purposely excluded German/Austrian Models... We KNOW they're built to a very high standard! The "3 Rail" AC Märklin Trains, I've always been fascinated with. Märklin Mini-Z is mindblowing! I've built Heljan, Fleishman and several other FINE German HO Scale Structures, that were superb. The reason I didn't bring them up, they're all fairly centralized... Central European Models exclusively. With the possible exception of Busch, which makes UK and US Vehicle Models. Lenz might have marketed the first practical DCC Systems... But Digitrax and NCE perfected them, and created intuitive, user-friendly Systems. However, nowadays, all DCC Companies (EXCEPT Lionel) work together like no other part of Model Railroading. They made sure that all their DCC Systems and Decoders (Chips), are forward and backward compatible with each other's Equipment!!

Very nice model Sam! You are correct about the whistle as well. The 08s had whistles when they were introduced, same as the class 11s, 12s and the unusual class 13s. I'll be honest when I started volunteering on the Mid Hants Railway in 2010, I thought a diesel with a whistle was a bit odd, but you end up accepting it when you see how odd a class 11 looks with a traditional horn. In my opinion. :P

Hi Sam, one of my all time favorite locos, I spend many years working on the real thing and loved them as well. The Bachmann model represented a huge step change in what was available at the time, the mechanism with the 80-1 gears, powerful motor and fly wheel made it, or make it one of the best runners of all time. A simple mod to turn the pickups through 90' so they rub on the back of the flange can be attempted but equally a IPA and cotton bud clean will float off most of the dirt anyway. The Hornby one was basically a copy of the Bachmann but with some significant detail enhancements so it does have the edge. Biggest thing to watch out for on the Bachmann is the original lube can go solid, because the gear reduction is so powerful this can cause damage to the lower gears! All in all a stunner, I have 8 in my collection :) Nice video mate

Hi Sam, the "08" diesel shunter, as it's name implies, was designed for shunting duties and was geared to suit that job. It was to replace the aging steam shunters which needed a lot of preparation for duties and had to return to the shed periodically to replenish it's coat bunker and also water stops, also needing two crew members. The "08s" just needed a full tank of fuel and a driver, turn the key to start it up, and it was ready for a day's work. With only a 350 horse power diesel engine, it was capable of pulling a rake of in excess of 1,000 tons with ease. Some had their gear trains changed to increase it's top speed to 20 - 25 mph for short trip workings. There are some in preservation with their original engines still in use, one on the "Strathspey Railway." Just thought you might be interested. Regards, Alan.

I love the class 08 , they are my favourite Locomotive. I have 14 Bachmann and 2 Hornby high detail ones on my layout. I can confirm that the later Bachmann 08 models that are dcc ready have the pick ups moved to locate on the back of the wheels for better running. The Hornby high detail models are superior in detail, but I find the Bachmann 08 runs better ,especially over points due to having a sprung center axle. Curiously both my hornby high detail 08's are out of action having chucked their wheel conrods !

I will possibly buy a Bachmann one to see if it is better than my Hornby 08 super detailed version. I get a terrible screeching sound if the loco is ran cab first at a fast pace, but it doesn't effect performance. I have tried lubricating every gear, shaft and moving part of the drive and it seems better but the screeching is still there. I have heard the Bachmann ones are pretty reliable.

@@SamsTrains I have mainly Ho Trix models and the axles have bearings but the central wheels often do not. The idea is you get better-running characters if the centre wheels are sprung and floating in the semi-circular metal chassis cutouts. The axles that are directly driven always have bearings.

I have a Hornby Class 09 (similar to an 08, but with a 400hp engine instead of 350hp - easily identified by them being fitted with waist-level jumper cables, for shunting Southern Region EMUs, as the entire class was allocated to the Southern Region during their heyday). As if to add to the confusion, several Class 08s were later converted to Class 09/1 or 09/2! For me, the Hornby model just edges it, as it has functioning lights, which my Bachmann 08 (08021 - Ref 32-115A from 2013) does not have.

The very similar class 11 which was the forerunner to the class 08 was also exported to the Netherlands and Australia. In the Netherlands, as the class 600/700, it was the main shunting loco for nearly 50 years. A small number of the Dutch loco's have come back to the UK after retirement in NL. If you really like real 08's then you can rent one from Middle Peak Railways. (I've no connection with them, just find it interesting.) Roco used to make an H0 scale model of the Dutch version, would be interesting to see how it compares with the Bachmann/Hornby offerings.

Hi Sam. Now I've seen you have also just reviewed the Dapol 0-gauge one, you really do need to review the Hornby version. I've got one, well it was a Christmas present to my son circa 2006. I can't believe how much prices have risen as it cost me about £44 from the now defunct model shop in Guernsey (no VAT until the Royal Mail wised up). We were amazed at the detail and quality, which is much better than the Bachmann equivalent IMO. It is also geared to a realistic top speed, so the crawl is absolutely amazing.

Hi Sam, it's a very nice little locomotive which performs very well - nearly as well as the Hornby one - which adds opening roof vent and doors. Hornby one is better, with metal handrails. You should try the internal cab and directional lights conversion - good practice of those modelling skills!! I did it to me Hornby one. Hornby coupling rods are slightly finer / thinner and perhaps susceptible to damage. For rough / general use perhaps the Bachmann wins on this alone. On overall performance, I think you'll find the Hornby one is even better, with it's 5-pole motor with flywheel, nicely geared - didn't compare the weights, but both similar. Hornby one pulling 13 TEA tankers without issue currently. Al.

Yeah, for a 2001 diesel the detailing is excellent and the fantastic pulling power. A second-hand version would cost about £50 if you can get one. The pick ups can be moved to the rear of the wheel set by little bends and a twist on of the pick ups so they slip behind, for the faint hearted. If you have or get the Hornby "Europa" 08 shunter in grey livery as I remember it was released around that time too, to do a fair review of the early 2000s locos.

I have a Bachmann split chassis pannier tank engine that is probably the same age as this. I picked it up at a garage sale for £1 about a year ago, and was very impressed with some of the detail - particularly the painted brake lever - but unfortunately the mechanism lets it down. It is very noisy, has exceedingly bad traction despite being fairly heavy, and would only run once I had scraped almost all the oil off the axles. It’s even more of a shame since my next most detailed locomotive is the Hornby WCR pug from the west coast highlander set!

I have never had a Bachmann 08 but according to other model railway KZbinrs they are pretty reliable. I have a hornby 08 shunter with the opening cab doors but I have a issue with either its drive or motor as it screeches loudly if run at a high speed.

Yes they are fairly reliable (while the pickups are clean that is!) - ahh really? I might have to try my own luck with one of those then! Thanks for watching - Sam :)

@@SamsTrains i have found out that you have to check the hornby ones are well lubricated as they come with hardly any lubricant or oil new. I have oiled every moving item and it seems a bit better.

The Hornby version it is easier to insert TTS into and a very nice one. Should do a back to back Sam.
