Sounds like saloon music from the old westerns. Love it!
@bryanrabie31895 жыл бұрын
You got me thinking about the truth to that. I knew Joplins Rags were approximate to 190-?-1912 or so,...according to Wikipedia the first rag was published by Ernest Hogan in 1895 and the first "Old West" "The first saloon was established at Brown's Hole, Wyoming, in 1822, to serve fur trappers."(Wikipedia) so yup it is. I thought those movies/saloons predated ragtime.,..I mean that they were long gone by then. I got a history lesson today
@jamessmitt32695 жыл бұрын
Bryan Rabie Scott Joplin’s first rag was this one in 1895 shortly after the beginning of ragtime
@ericwang93485 жыл бұрын
Bryan Rabie the saloon culture was very much alive and even flourishing in the years before prohibition. The rampant drunkenness and perceived ill effects of the saloons and the behaviors they encouraged were major factors in the success of Prohibition. So you certainly could head to a saloon around 1910 and hear some Joplin or other ragtime, it was a common style that saloon pianists played before the development of true Jazz.

Your latest interpretations have been the best. I really like your small witty improvisations that bring variety, surprise and some show off to the pieces. Those bits where you make small appogiaturas (like 0:14 or 3:25), or even when you play melodie in octavas (4:01), keep doing that stuff it works really nice!!!

Comments were disabled on Great Crush Collision. Just wanted to comment here on that. I LOVE the way you did the second collision!!!! Obviously, OBVIOUSLY, no one including Joplin himself played that song exactly as written, it was meant to be embellished. It was written so that people with modest piano skills could play it as written, and more talented performers could add to it. Anyway, I love your version. Thanks!

Just picked up the Joplin book after a long hiatus to play on my new Kawai. I used to own Hyman's 5 disk (vinyl, at that) set (Complete Works of Scott Joplin) and wish I still had them! I can really appreciate your take on Joplin as I clearly remember Eubie Blake (in the school of ragtime section) admonishing, "never, never play ragtime fast"! Cory, you heard this loud and clear! I love your tempo in all the pieces you perform. That said, some passages do sound awesome a little faster, particularly to achieve the "weird and intoxicating effect" like in Peacherine (3rd part). Anyway, I appreciate your passion for Joplin, your improvisations and your videos. The Joplin Rags are incredibly fun to play. Thanks for tutoring others to achieve this.

That was really excellent. In my humble opinion, he is one of the best ragtime players to post on the internet. Probably he is the best of anyone who has a considerable number of ragtime pieces posted. There are a small number of individual ones played by Winifred Atwell and Jo Ann Castle that I like better in certain ways. But they are playing with different styles that are probably more appropriate for television or large, noisy auditoriums. Also, they have accompaniment. Bachscholar's are probably more true to the original and are typically played in a relaxing manner with a certain sweetness and grace that one does not hear with many other performances. I like his playing a lot.
@BachScholar8 жыл бұрын
+Sigmund Burman Thanks! Ragtime is a style too few pianists understand. Advanced classical pianists are usually too stuffy to give ragtime any serious effort, beginning classical pianists don't have the proper technique to play it, and of the jazz pianists who have enough technique they usually aren't disciplined enough to do it justice. I am a classical pianist who happens to love ragtime and try to play it the way I think it should be played. Thanks for listening and appreciating!

Im doing a recording for my orchestra (because the pandemic) and the clicktrack they gave us is really bad. I found this and its really helpful! Sadly, Im second violin so it is kinda hard trying to listen to something that wasn't the melody. I was great until about a few measures before 62. I don't think there was a a violin II part after that. This recording is great though and the piano playing is also well done! (Especially with all the off beat notes)
