Back at Lofty with PN & SCT Eastbound Intermodal's.

Its' March 24' , and I'm back in the Adelaide Hills for more rail fanning and beautiful early Autumn weather. This clip features two Eastbound trains from Pacific National and SCT , both topping the 2.2% grade as they roll through the platform.

Great video Gregg, interesting how the German engines run at higher RPM’s verses the Americans engines. Here in Nebraska the UP and BNSF aren’t running as many trains compared to last year. How’s the rail business doing down there? Hopefully better than US. Cheers from Terry in cold Nebraska.

Thanks Terry! The MTU's are more suited to Marine and power generation it seems? There are great units but not suited to the heavy haul rail environment it appears? Plus running at such high rpm surely limits there life span? We are still 50 yrs behind the US when it comes to rail, but we are slowly moving more freight back to rail transport. Cheers Gregg.

Hey Gregg. Do you know if the Chinese locomotives outperform the American locomotives or vice versa? Why are Australian railroads buying Chinese locomotives? Are they cheaper than American locomotives while offering relatively the same performance? Cheers, Joe.

Hey Joe, only SCT (the company in this video) went back for a second order of the Chinese locomotives (Qube operate some as well). Most other companies have committed to more Australian made locomotives from UGL with GE engines. Basically a US/Australian locomotive. No EMD licence is held in Australia anymore so new EMDs have to be fully imported. It seems the UGL GE product is favoured the most at the moment for mainline power.

I would doubt it JOe , I haven't looked up the specs for the CSR's , but I know from watching them that they work a lot harder the the EMD's and sand a lot more as well. They were bought for the price and that's it. Cheers Gregg.
