I first stayed in Hope Valley back in 1972, I`ve camped in that area countless times since and like yourself a warm glow envelopes me as soon as I arrive. I`d like to think that my ashes will end up there one day.

There's a word in Welsh, Hiraeth. There's no direct translation into English but it means something like a longing and nostalgia for a place. When you were talking about Kinder it reminded me of it.

I felt quite emotional Andy listening to your soliloquy, because I have similar feelings about various locations in the Dark Peak. One of my favourite pitches was Grinah Stones. I always felt perfectly at peace there and it breaks my heart I can no longer reach it. Wonderful video as always. Really enjoy watching your content. Take care.

I think that those of us who enjoy the outdoors can understand that sense of place and home that somewhere like Kinder can make you feel. You've walked every nook and cranny of it and it makes it feel like it is yours (especially when no-one else is there at 6 in the morning). 👍

At the risk of repetition, this channel deserves far more subscribers, an additional zero on the end for starters . The passion is always self evident , that having been magnified in this video, and it makes for a very entertaining watch. The footage is excellent as is the commentary and informative content. Not many with have that , I’ve carried it too now 62 years of age I still have that burning inside me . Same story really started out in Edale every weekend back in the mid 70s , such a wonderful place and very lucky to have it on our doorstep. Keep the fire burning, love the passion.

Funnily enough our science teacher at Wombwell High School Mr Smith inspired a few of us (to this day) by taking us to the Peaks and Dales when were were in 4th and 5th year. Before that, I remember camping at the Information Centre at Edale with 2 of my mates in the Autumn half term holiday in October 1983, when were were in 3rd year at high school. We caught the train over from Wombwell. In those days there we no phones. I told my mother, she wasn't too bothered, and I reappeared a week later without any questions. The way it was in those days, which seems like a different world now.

I understand everything you said about coming home to kinder scout , Just like you I was always intrigued by it I remember being taken there by my parents but not up onto the plateau And wondering what it must be like up there, I remember my first time getting to the top on my own and what a wonderful feeling it was, After that I did the same thing going up kinder from all the cloughs , On all sides ,walking the full circuit loads of times , Crossing the plateau loads of different ways , I think it was up there I really got to grips with map and compass work, And after that I took my children up And showed them , And then as you get older it was my children and their girlfriends , And we still go Again And again , And it’s never the same Always new and fresh , I suppose it started with it being the highest and most intriguing place in the peaks for me as a young child with my parents , And then it became mine And my children’s And hopefully their children’s aswell So I totally get what you said , I feel it too Kinder feels like home And it’s part of our family 👍👌

Another cracking video Andy. I really enjoyed it. I totally get how you feel about your special place and the bolt of lightening moment you experienced as child with your shool teacher.Similar to you i've got Mr Chappel my science teacher at secondry school to thank for my introduction to the great outdoors. He organised a group of us to do the Lyke Wake Walk. " Get your mum and dad to buy you a decent pair of walking boots, make sure you bed them in beforehand,and invest in a Peter Storm rain jacket!" were his words of advice. A rubber lined jacket! Jesus cutting edge or what? What amazed me about the experience was that we walked through the night, saw the sun set and rise, and above all else the fact that we were not the only daft buggers up there. " Evening! Nice night !" I can still hear Mr Chappel warmly greeting passers by and parties walking towards us doing the route in reverse. Also similar to you the seeds planted on that trip lay dormant untill they germinated in my early twenties kickstarted with a workmate recommending me John Merrill's Long Circular Walks in the Peak District. As a group of mates and i trod the routes described by Merrill we never really looked back. A challenging days walking quickly took precidence over a night on the piss. Anyway i'm waffling on and preaching to the converted. Keep on trekking bud. You're living the dream!

Great video Andy, I'm from Sheffield and get out to kinder when I can, I was wandering well off the path a few years ago and came across a superb camping spot dug into the hill, 3 sides covered you from the weather and the other is an amazing view, I never told anyone about it abd always wondered did anyone else know, I used to leave things like a tent peg stuck in the middle of where you'd put your tent to see if it had been moved for the next time I went, the last time I went was new years eve and there was a callopsed euro hike tent there with a wet monopoly board inside, I was gutted, the site felt dirty and I had to leave the tent as it was to much to take down

Its been great to hear your thoughts and i totally get where you are coming from here Andy.....i know that you said it was your old school teacher that first took you up on Kinder but i think like me you have come to understand that Kinder itself is like a Teacher itself, you have grown from it both physically and mentally and its become a very good old friend, its where you cut your teeth with the great outdoors and you obviously respect it and feel like you owe it as do i. This is something that i very often consider , its been 50 years since i first camped there and i have travelled and climbed all over the world and been to some very impressive areas that dwarf the Peaks but i am a granddad now and much slower and wiser than i was when i was 12 years old but the amazing thing is that i notice and appreciate a lot more these days. Kinder should never be underestimated because it can truly put up a challenging fight ....you will never tire of this fanatastic place .

@Olan... 3 ай бұрын
I am exactly the same and i dont mind being at risk of offending anyone i see camping to remind them not to leave any rubbish. We all have to do our bit to prevent it as best we can and spread the word to the clueless. In the Climbing community they have Crag Clean Up days and it would be a really good idea if we had say 4 days per year where everyone came together and did a hike and clean up day splitting into various groups on different route and maybe had a meet up at the end of the day . My working life doesn't lend itself to be an ambassador of such a group but maybe there is someone who is retired that this would appeal to or even someone from Derbyshire council or some other body.@@AndrewBeavers

Superb video as always, Andy, and I know exactly what you mean and I too would struggle to articulate it... but it's almost like a place that allows the soul to 'settle' maybe, to feel at home. I don't know if you've ever read any Jim Crumley books? He has a knack of word pictures, of conveying a sense of place in a very evocative way. And I think whatever area you first explore and enjoy when you discover the hills or just the joy of walking will always remain special and through life, even if other places come to mean a lot, there's always something about the area you first explored. For me it's the Lakes - I used to come up from London where I worked as often as I could, mostly to east Cumbria as it was easier to get to, and a weekend's backpacking around there would sort my head out, if you see what I mean. Now, my 'home' feels like Scotland and Mull in particular but i will never lose the love of the Lakes and continue to explore as often as I can. One thing else you mentioned which struck me, about your favourite bit of Kinder and the history of it - would you do a video for there one day? It would be grand to see it.

I cut my teeth in Lake District with my Dad, my parents actually met each other in the rambling club, both very keen walkers, in my early teens my Dad introduced me to all the wonderful hills of the Lakes, i recently watched a video of striding edge and thought back to me and my Dad when i was about 14 doing it!. I thank my Dad dearly r i p for introducing me to hiking. Wild camping though has only recently come into my life, and i can’t for the life of me think why i didn’t do it years ago but still, here i am, and my introduction to the Peak District was while working on a big house renovation opposite Dovestones res, fell in love with the place and my first wild camp was woolpacks, been back to same spot many a time. Thanks Andy for sharing your thoughts and memories, always nice to get a bit of background to people i think, i was out on Tuesday too over at crowstones and very windy it was too, and frosty but a beautiful sunset and sunrise so all good. I don't think your love of the area has grown over the years, it was set with the positive memories and experiences when young. You are just enhancing your memories. What a shame that teachers can't do that anymore. So many kids have missed out. My grandfather was living just north of the dam wall at Derwent and gran until her house was demolished for Ladybower, so I've been dragged there from a young age. From what I've read, you can sleep better in a tent as you aren't surrounded by electromagnetic radiation as much from the electrics in your house, and all the appliances, and the internet. Also you do grounding when camping which helps release the static electricity that builds up in the bod!

Yes Andy! Thank you, I always see these KZbinrs claiming "you can't sleep well in a tent" but I'm like you in the way if you put me in a tent...hell put me in a hammock I don't care I'll have the best nights sleep and I'm always up before the sun anyway so I'd much rather have something to lōōk at we me brew like. Granted I likes to peddle about the peaks mostly because I'm a rate fooker for rolling me ankles
@AndrewBeavers
@AndrewBeavers 3 ай бұрын
haha i was bad at one time for rolling the ankles but after reverting back to zero drop trail shoes bar winter theyve made a hell of a difference to my balance & ankle strength..a lot really dont get that i sleep as well as i do when camping..part of the enjoyment for me..

I don't quite get what you are saying Andy 😂. I used to get that feeling about the Lakes as I spent many a year up there in my teenage years with the family. Sadly its been far too long since I returned. I still do hear the call of the high fells, but working a 9-5 job it's difficult to get away. Hopefully will get my arse up there this year.

if you dont quite get what i say Andy you'll just have to take my word for it 😉😄 strange how places can take a hold of us & give us that feeling of home aint it..

You completely sold me on Senchi a while back. I've already got 3 bottoms and several tops, even got one on now as I type this. Great recommendation.

It's been a while since I visited Andy but I enjoyed that. Yeah, home is a coding - a bit like your mother. Kinder and the Peak District is a great place to be coded by - as well as your teacher. A decent pitch and rest by the sounds. That clothing you spoke of - only hear of it for the first time from an American KZbin I follow. What is it again Cynchi or Cynchy? Not sure. Well, good going. All the best. Mark

I'm thinking of doing some Wild camping this year as I live near the peak district. Where is best to park the car, as I see alot of car parks say no overnight parking?
@AndrewBeavers
@AndrewBeavers 3 ай бұрын
obviously depends on area but edale is always a safe place to park & £7 for 24 hours is a bargain.

When hiking up hill should I wear a parka or go light and just wear a padded jacket in winter
@AndrewBeavers
@AndrewBeavers 3 ай бұрын
wear as little as comfortable doing so..you dont want to end up sweating inside a parka whilst hiking then be feeling cold at the summit due to the wet sweat youve created..
