I recently moved from Marietta, GA to White Springs, FL and have not been in my shop since before September 2022. My new shop is nearly complete and all my stuff was moved from storage to the new building this past week. I have a new lathe and am ready to start turning again. So practice is very much in order. Glad you managed to survive both heart attack AND Covid, and are back in the shop. Great advice on practicing. I gave up on turning after receiving my January light bill. My shed is heated electrically, and it was just ridiculously high here in Indiana. It's beginning to warm up here now, and I intend to be making and selling some items. Some of which I learned from you. Stay well Dean, and welcome back.

So glad to see you back in the shop. I know how it is. I had covid and was in the hospital/rehab for 2 months. I was very weak and required physical therapy after I came home for 2 months. Then I fell and broke my leg and was back in rehab with a rod in my leg. It was a long while before I was able to get back to the shop. I missed it so much and was so glad to finally get back out there. I learn so much from you. You are a natural teacher. I'm looking forward to more videos, but I will also be watching your older videos again because there is so much to learn there. Thanks!

Dean -- I was away from the lathe for about 3 years. The reasons varied: I remodeled my shop, I had COVID (twice), I started a new job, etc. I finally got some lathe time shortly before Christmas. Turning is NOT like riding a bicycle! Relearning some hard-won skills has been frustrating. But, it has been good to be back in the shop. I hope your health continues to improve and that your turning skills will come back more quickly, and with less frustration, than mine have!

Yes I agree with you. I have had all three. I found that you have to work a little bit on your recovery everyday. A good woman helps out a lot along with a strong believe in a higher sprit. Best to see you again. Keep turning.

Dean, welcome back. I forget about practicing. I too have been having some heart issue and they did a heart ablation last week also with a heart ultrasound.. Ysteerday I went shopping with family and it was wonderful to be able to walk any distance without getting short of breath. We all have issues. You are right on with practice. God Bless.

I was glad to hear your statement about a “scrappy” piece of pine to practice on. Recently a new turner asked what wood to practice and learn with. Immediately there were a couple of folks who starting no ranting about “anything but pine.” Guess they didn’t understand the idea that if you can turn pine you can turn anything. Good job Dean. Looking forward to what you come up with.

Welcome back! It's great to see you healthy and back in the shop! You've been missed. (Glad to hear the show was successful too.) 20 years ago I nearly died as a result of Congestive Heart Failure, so I have a pretty good idea of what you're experiencing. The best advice I can give you is two-fold: 1. Follow the doctor's instructions (If you're not comfortable, find a different Doc that you can relate to and trust) and 2. If you haven't already done so, have your Cardiologist help you get into a cardiac rehab program! Working with these professionals in a closely monitored & structured exercise program will give you the confidence to work at re-strengthening the heart muscle without worrying about overdoing it.

Covid in December 2020 put me in the hospital for two weeks and three more months on oxygen, so it was a little over 4 months before I could get back out to my shop. But life happens and these things can't be avoided.
