My theory is that this is about childhood trauma and repressed memories. I think the pat on the back making an indent symbolizes the impact an abuser had on him at an early age. On top of that, he says “I used to know the locals and the lay of the land.” I think it’s a little unusual that he says “used to” here because I feel like most people still remember their hometown and neighbors when they go back to visit. This might be because the trauma he went through there has caused his brain to repress the memories, and the whole video is him trying to recount what happened so he can confront the issue. As someone who went through a lot of abuse as a kid, the whole vibe of the video and the song just feel like a perfect description of that trauma.

I love the mood this animation conveys. It captures those memories you have from childhood, where you had experiences but you dont have the words yet to describe them properly. The adults who are all just legs, i remember how often i would just stare at my dads knees as a toddler instead of his face. Or the "pat on the back" when an adult gives you a sign of affection that you aren't used to. Like if you parents usually hugged you, but your aunt suddenly ruffles your hair without warning. Its clearly out of affection, but you are too little to understand the change in sensation. My theory: The video is about how during our childhood we were content with things that we would now see as insignificant, such as being slapped on the back, staying up late, touching a bird, or talking to others. That's why Jack says at one point "but that was all", as if it really wasn't a big deal.

I have a theory where this is a story of neglect where the kid was neglected and the best thing in life was a pat on the back which means that maybe his parents noticed he was there and gave him a slap on the back but to the boy it was just being noticed was the best thing about it. But soon he started to get out a bit more and started to lighten up a bit experiencing a bird land on his hand and saying hello to the neighbours and started to warm up to the town he lived in and soon started to have a life of his own and this song is him telling the story of his child hood.

When you're a child you feel like you have the world just about figured out, you don't worry about your future, and you don't wrack your mind over difficult or abstract concepts. I think I finally understand what happened to Jack. in the 3 videos that came after COVID, you can see Jack’s struggles. In the first video, New Normal, it outright says what it’s about, how hard things have now become, and how things won’t go back to normal for a long time so this is the new normal. Depression and death have also been huge themes in his account, for example, Dinner Is Not Over, so this is most likely Jack’s mental state rapidly plummeting. In the next one, Back, it’s very autobiographical, about Jack Stauber as a child. What I see in it is Jack reminiscing about how his life was before the virus. In the final one before the hiatus, it’s the one that hits the hardest. Someone Jack knew, or someone a friend of Jack’s knew, died, most likely from COVID. I feel like this is where Jack’s mental health reached an all time low, and where the hiatus started. I don’t want anyone to take this as fact, as it is very likely that it isn’t. But if it is the case, I just want to say, I hope you’re well, Jack.
