This is my interpretation of it: its going to be long. feel free to comment what you think :> TW: i like to make more dark interpretations so, don't read if you feel uncomfortable with how i interpret things First, let’s consider the overall theme before diving into the details. The video includes several notable lines: "You know what, you’re going to grow up to be a scientist. Maybe you could explain why hiccups happen." "Just these?" "Nope." "Okay." "Yeah." "Haha" (Dad joke) "Hmm, smell Dougie, smell." followed by discovering that the hot dogs are cold. "All good things take time." "I love you." On a surface level, the video appears to teach about patience and love. It depicts a father’s patience as he navigates life’s challenges with a positive attitude. He acknowledges that he doesn’t have all the answers and remains patient rather than pretending to know everything. The father jokes with the cashier about only buying hot dogs, hinting at his hope for a future when he can afford more. This message noted by most people is further illustrated by his action of waiting for the hot dogs to cook even on a possibly broken grill and by his approach to teach and love a child who doesn’t yet understand him. (very heartwarming yes) but weirdly after thinking about it a question keep coming to my mind, since JackStrauber often uses symbolism through his titles, i felt loss at the deeper meaning of hot dogs. the link between hotdog and patience seems... not there? in my opinion what the father is doing is pointless, if the hotdog roller is broken, then there's no point in waiting for the hot dog to heat up. is it trying to showcase the patience of facing difficulties and setbacks? but it just didn't sit right with me, since unlike most people I felt very terrified when the father said "i love you" as it reminded me of how my parents would often use those same words to avoid responsibility and as a way of manipulation. And they way the father said it felt sinister, but i just couldn't put my finger on it which was why i tried to look for a different interpretation when it hit me like a 100 ton truck in a zebra cross. what if what jack Strauber was trying to highlight was the complete opposite of what people interpreted, what if he was showcasing complacency. yes COMPLACENCY was the main theme. then this weird feeling i felt would make sense. Stick with me here cause this is where it gets exciting it always felt weird how the father felt eager to use the grill, judging it by its outer experience, not knowing if its broken or dirty nor EVEN TESTING IT. isn't he worried if he fall sick on what would happen to his son? then what if we consider the hotdog as a symbolism the father here, meaninglessly rolling through his daily life, without seeking for improvement or a medium to get "heated" (a symbolism of a better state in life) complacent staying in a broken dirty machine instead of seeking for improvement. From here i think I'm just overthinking it but I think Jack Strauber titled his work hot dog as a metaphor, since hotdogs are often associated with daredevil and risktakers, the situation provided a compelling irony of how the word risktaker is spun in a negative way through the father taking the risk of poisoning himself to enjoy a good hotdog. Risk taker? yes but not in the good kind. Do you get what i mean? instead of taking appropriate risks, he was instead complacent (not checking the machine) and taking dumb risks(using it), a misinterpretation of what he should do as a hotdog (symbol) Something to also note was the father’s impatience with the hot dogs, although he knew it was cold, not even 5 second passed and he checked on it again (symbolizing his impatience towards himself inwardly?), obviously he's disappointed and just was confused of what to say to his son but his denial of the hot dogs’ condition may reflect a deeper dissatisfaction with his own life, asking himself why he didnt check the machine before using it why was he so complacent? and just bought hotdogs dumbly. Whats fascinating is that rather than addressing the problem directly or seeking a solution, he opts to distract himself with anecdotes and expressions of love which we can see when he just out of the blue says "I love you" instead of looking for a way to better his situation or give a platform for his child to flourish (like actually was he trying to feed his baby hotdogs from a broken machine or starve him? and he want his child to be a doctor?)This could reflect a tendency to mask personal shortcomings and frustrations with emotional responses, rather than confronting and addressing the underlying issues even when he feels disatisfied with himself. (oh sht I'm getting onto something) Then that these lines would have wildly different meanings "you know what. You are going to grow up to be a scientist maybe you could explain pop pop hiccups are" showcases his complacency that instead of teaching his child -> he wants his child to teach him, he's complacent with what he knows? The joke and the face he makes 0:30 was something weird to me. Maybe saying no as a joke was his way of escaping his status as someone poor, wanting to feel like he could actually buy more, with the laugh being more self deprecating then appreciating his joke, having his eyes look at his child then up with the distorted face might be done by jack Strauber to showcases the guilt the father has to his sons unfortunate situation (as he is stuck with the father) which is why he keeps trying to appear happy and relaxed juxta posing his actual feelings. Another thing I want to highlight is the line "All good things take time" "I remember back when i was a teenager before touching the hotdogs again" this is VERY FASCINATING, not only did he juxtapose what he just says by touching the hotdogs but he didn't want to share his anecdote, in my own opinion he may have wanted to talk about his experience of being patient before realizing that it was instead a negative trait, maybe realizing that the same patient he's preaching was actually complacency and letting "time pas through" without meaningful change was a bad advice to give to his child which is why he deflected it to a simple i love you. another interesting is how the child uses a shirt titled hunk 0:05 with a not so attractive face, along with the child being showcased as dumb but his father wanting him to be a doctor... weird, i have an interpretation but to make it more fun, i want you guys if you read this whole yapping to write what you think it might mean and ill respond with my opinion. Sorry if its all over the place, but i hope you can get what I'm yapping at, the more i watch the video the more sure i am that the deeper meaning of the video is about complacency and taking matters into ones own hands instead of just showcasing the fathers kindness haha, i get why Jack is a genius honestly, even a simple video like this feels so deep when you think about it
