Thank you for this very clear and actionable video :)

sensei, I was hoping you would show realistic ushiro (back) ukemis from standing. To me, they are the hardest because if my legs fly off the mat as in a hard and fast fall from standing, perhaps osotogari, my head hits the mat causing concussion - even when I tuck my chin. As happened to me yet again, 20 minutes ago :)

It is a usual problem. One answer relies on tori accepting the fall and not resisting the action, but going with it and completing a side break fall instead of a back break fall. The other component is your training partner taking more care of you by making sure they pull up on their elbow grip, to effectively land you more on your side, and get some rotation action going. It is disturbing that if you ever throw with osoto gari in self defence then it is likely that the strong throw directly on the back would kill or knock out and scatter their brains of any opponent. I myself have used this unintentionally more than once due to modern stretchy clothing making it harder to support an offender in the landing and yet osoto gari is one of the easier throws more useful in Policing and security because its quick and works efficiently from blocking a strike and countering with a throw. Going back to the point about break falls strong muscles that can hold up a neck from osoto throwing usually take 2-4 years judo to build.

@@JudoLife Thanks for the tip about preferring to break fall sideways. Did you ever "knock out and scatter someone's brains" on the pavement... Have you considered writing a blog with your videos linked from it? Currently your (and others) youtube videos lack a fuller context they come from, a story, commentary. If you wrote a blog, you can post your wider thoughts about the technique in the video and embed the video in your post. For instance, this valuable tip about how to avoid knocking one's head on mat. It could be part of the post on ukemis rather than lost in a comment on the video. The blog can help organize your existing videos around curriculum (yellow belt, orange etc..) This would be extremely useful to learning judokas.

I am pretty sure curriculum changes one country to the next for specific requirements. Thanks for the idea. Yes once I knocked a guy out, he was unconscious for over ten minutes and I was concerned for him, (from osotogari) His mates were drunk and they didn't want me near, I was doing security and this guy had already had scraps and needed removing for causing strife in a function. I moved him into recovery straight after the throw, but was waiting the rest of the week half expecting a brain bleed to take him. He was very angry and was about to punch my face. He was warned not to punch me twice or else he would go down. He was an aggressive big guy and didn't believe me. I tried not to knock him out but landings on shingle and stretchy modern clothing make it harder to control the action.@@anilphilip546

@@JudoLife ...then perhaps not organized around curriculum, but around judo topics.
