Thank you so much for making this video! I'm new to archery in the last 6 or 7 months, and have been dead-lucky enough to have been regularly shooting with one of the top compound archers in my country. He has taught me a tremendous amount about the sport and technique, but your explaination in regards to using a "back tension" release is about 100 times easier to understand, and I'm going to tell him! Haha. Keep throwing up content, you're an excellent coach!

Hey Jimi, I have been shooting compound for 2 years now, never went to a club or had any coaching, all learned from youtube (nearest club is 2 hours drive away). Last weekend I did that drive to the nearest club, thinking in two years of solo learning must have picked up some bad habits, it would be good to have a lesson. Actually, I was not as bad as I thought I was, but the best thing I have picked up is that I need a new release. Been looking at thumb and backtension releases for 2 days now. Your explanation of back tension is by fat the best I have found in 6 hours off googling. Thank you so much for that. Keep up the good work. You are a saviour to punters like me who live in the sticks.

Like I was trying to say in the Backyard Archery League video about how I get my Stan SX-3 three finger release to go off. I just hold my hand in the same way. By putting pressure with my pinkie on the top shelf it simply rotates the release down into my thumb that doesn't move. I also get the feeling that I'm getting my 2 shoulder blades pinching together. Very repeatable & most of all it feels natural.

Jimi This is a great video! You are such a student of archery. There is one tip that Jesse gave me, that I will pass on to you that will help you (and your viewers) have more confidence in drawing back and not whacking yourself with a right uppercut. He said the first thing he does once he hooks the string is put his thumb on the peg. Now you can draw with confidence and the pressure between the thumb and forefinfinger will prevent a premature release. BUT Just to be safe, in addition I just cock my head slightly to the side as I draw out of the line of fire (Just in case it goes off... the mechanism can fail or the D-loop could break...you never know) and once the string is back I settle my head right back behind the string and start the shot. I also shoot the release with the click (I am using the Stan 2-finger onyx) which is also kind of a safeguard to know if my release is close to going off. Of the three techniques you mentioned, I personally prefer Jesse's method of relaxation when shooting the hinge.

Hey Jimi, I have looked at almost a hundred vids on releases and back tension. To me, same as you, squeezing back muscles seemed weird because of the amount of movement needed to pull shoulder blades together. Surely this would make the torso move. So I wasn't exactly sure how the release was achieved. You explained it beautifully in the first 30 seconds. This is the most informative vid on topic I have seen. Brilliant. Cheers mate.

The scapula movement is very minimal. It takes practice, but you basically set the release hot enough to go off with just a little bit of chest expansion/back tension. Then you need to trust your shot and not worry so much about the results. The more consistent you get, the better your results will be.
@JimiEllis
@JimiEllis 6 жыл бұрын
There is no pros that shoot like that unless u r recurve shooter. Its a technique brought from recurve to compound by shit archers who think its the same. what u r talking about is how good recurves go through the click but good recurves hold like twice as much weight as a compound so u need a large muscle group
@gnydick
@gnydick 6 жыл бұрын
Sorry, Jimi, but unfortunately, you don't know what you're talking about. Nearly every pro will tell you archery is about big muscles, because they are dumb and not twitchy. The fact that you're telling people to consciously activate their fingers is bad advice. The best thing you can achieve it's a subconscious or incidental motion in your fingers due to the back tension. What you're offering is a recipe for target panic and punching the release.

@JimiEllis
@JimiEllis 7 жыл бұрын
+randy63o it could be 2 things u the sensitivity screw could of came it got really hot but some stans r not know for that or it could be u r buting pressure on your out side fingers when u draw back try just drawing back with just your index finger and your thumb no other fingers on the release if it still gose off when u draw back like that its the release and not u a back tension should never go off if u draw with just 1 finger and your thumb

That's a hinge, a backtension releases automatically with a certain amount of backtension... Like a silverback... If you're punching yourself in the face, you're drawing with your arm and not your back... Even if you set it off drawing you should never punch yourself in the face... If you do, you're not drawing correctly.
@JimiEllis
@JimiEllis 5 жыл бұрын
No the silver back is tension activated and the others r hinge activated they r both classed back tension and your draw does not cause u to punch your self your grip on the release does drawing has nothing to do with punching your self thanks for commenting even if every thing u said was wrong

Hey thanks for putting all the information you have found here on you tube in one place. The side by side comparison was a good idea. I do however feel like you truly don't understand what you have watched here on KZbin and are trying to explain to people. These people obviously don't need to shoot a back tension release ( yes a BACK TENSION) If they think you are guiding them. If I where Levi Morgan I would send you a bill every time you said my name. Shame on you for acting like you could even begin to explain any of the pros shot execution. How about you do a vid on telling everyone just how long you been trying to fake it in archery. I hear it ain't been long at all. Keep watching and stop faking and maybe one day you might actually understand what these pros are talking about. You owe it to archery to stop. Best of shooting to you.
