Used spend time training with bouncers from Birmingham's roughest pub. They love the open handed palm strike from waist level, sucker punch, first blow. It's a real fight stopper, and if you get in legal trouble after "I felt threatened so I slapped him" is a lot more defensible than many other potential first strikes.

Your right, people do get sloppy with there techniques. On the surface, it's a simple motion, but as you've shown, it has plenty of variation !!

Thank You! So many people disparage the palm strikes in favor of fists. 1. using the heel of the palm allows forceful blows to areas that have bones near the surface. 2. If you have grappling/throwing skills you can follow the strike smoothly. 3. If bystanders witness the fight they will likely report you as less aggressive to the police since they "did not see fists" from you.

Yes. A few small points to add. The Defendu system has body punches because they don't result in broken hands. Punching a WWII German infantry helmet most certainly would result in broken hands. Broken hands on the battlefield making you a liability not an asset. Open handed strikes can be (are) treated differently to punches by the police and courts in some jurisdictions. Punches often treated as worse. If you are arrested your hands will be photographed and the photos used in evidence against you if your knuckles are covered in bruises. In circumstances where there is any question as to who was involved in whatever incident it makes sense to not be the fool with bruised knuckles when the police are searching for someone to put in the frame.

Good video. Tyson most likely broke his hand because he was used to gloves and his fists aren't conditioned for bare knuckle. Add to that his punching power and that's a recipe for broken hand bones.
@TommyMooreww2combatives3 жыл бұрын
Exactly mate. A sloppy punch can break your hand, or get you a fistful of nasty teeth. And a shit palm strike can get you a broken wrist and a handful of nasty teeth. Moral of the story is, do your best to not be sloppy, but shit happens!

Thank you for the fantastic video. A couple of questions: 1.) with palm hooks is okay to keep your elbow down a bit (lower than the wrist) 2.) With your open hand in someone's face, is there much chance of having your fingers bitten off.
@TommyMooreww2combatives3 жыл бұрын
Hi fella, with the thumb up version, it’s like a solid slap with the body mechanics of a hook. I prefer the thumb down version where the elbow and wrist are parallel, but see what works for you 🤙. There can be a risk of biting but in reality you’re hitting really hard, gripping and ripping, or hitting again, very quickly. There’s little time for people to reach if you do it ballistically 🥊🙏 good luck and happy training mate

@@TommyMooreww2combatives This is why the hand pad drill you show are important. Bob bags and heavy bags tend to stop the palm strike, whereas the hand mitt trains you hit though the target. I've never had someone bite a finger when using palm strikes (as you say contact time is to short if you are following through or striking ballistically), only been bitten in grappling (vertical or ground work). If you do find your fingers is someone's mouth rake them out like you're stripping wall paper.

In Paris a couple years ago I got grabbed (hard) by the arm by some 'string men' going into a tourist spot. 4-5 really big ones. They let me go after I wouldn't pay them. If I'd fought I probably would have seriously hurt one, but gotten literally stomped to death by the rest. So what are your thoughts on multiple assailants?
@TommyMooreww2combatives3 жыл бұрын
Well there’s of course being aware, escaping etc. Let’s say those have failed and you have no choice. Try and use an improvised weapon (or a real one of law allows), keep mobile, learn to hit fucking hard and if grappled, grapple out explosively. There’s no easy answer but people that tend to survive group attacks usually attack first, keep attacking, keep moving and get gone or arm up and do the above. Always worth drilling it, sparring it, testing it 🥊❤️

The central part of the hand isn't useless. I nearly lost an eardrum from getting whacked upside the head with the open palm over my ear. It wasn't even intentional like in _All In Fighting_. It was incidental. Being able to "get the job done with the fists" is fine during the fight. So is getting teeth knocked out, fractures you don't notice at the time, stabs that feel like punches but don't slow you down, so on, so forth. The whole point of the exercise is to be able to go home, go to bed that night and get up in as close to good health as possible the next day. Minimizing injuries is part of the program. Broken metacarpals aren't the only problem. When I was in nursing we had a guy come into the hospital with a galloping blood infection from punching someone in the mouth, getting his knuckle cut on a tooth, and acquiring some of the horrible bacteria that live in the human mouth. One guy spent a few seconds unconscious. The other had multiple surgeries, several rounds of IV antibiotics, and a financially crippling US hospital bill. [Be thankful for the NHS, flawed as it is.]

Howdy, my main gripe is people doing piston style palm heels and using the less useful part of the palm (but we’ve all been there). Slaps you can get away with central hand, but I prefer as a rule the hard palm base. But I’m also a confident puncher, for me training both is important. But of course, horses for courses! 🙏🥊

@@TommyMooreww2combatives The good stuff is all good. I'm just a little oversensitive to some things that weren't supposed to work after they did and worked very well. I lost my sense of balance and thought someone had set off an explosion next to my head. As the man famously said when he regained consciousness in hospital "It looked like such a little chainsaw!" :) I also got the fear of God put into me about punching people in the mouth after taking care of the guy who got the infection. Changing dressings after a resection of the hand is not for the weak of stomach.

Palms/punch doesn't matter if the cat is black or white ..as long as it catches mice. People who favor punching should take a leaf out of the prize fighters book and invest in a good tight pair of gloves (don't mean boxing gloves but good quality dress/driving gloves) to reduce the risk of hand damage and cuts/infections. I agree with Tommy Morrision's comment that 80% of your striking practice should be done with power, this really teaches hand structure, .As a lad I was made to do punching and grabbing drills using wet sand in a bucket, made for thick skin and strong ligaments and tendons. Likewise grabbing throwing with coffee sacks filled with sand later on. The other lost art from "Bare knuckle" and prize fighting is the art of "thumbing". For Palms/ punches wrist strength is also key, fortunately with the advent of the internet and in the present lock down wrists are getting all the workout they need.😂
