When I was taking writing classes in college, they told us the best stories do four things: 1) Introduce and make you care about your characters, 2) Get your characters trapped in a tree, 3) Throw rocks at them while they're in the tree, 4) Successfully get them out of the tree (without any contrivance). This film is a masterclass in that approach.

They lost me at the first trailer…showing chewie, and knowing the timeframe relative to the original trilogy, and thinking “hang on…aren’t you meant to be dead?” Rei was little more than a bastardised shadow of her former self, same as disneys version of Ben was a shrivelled up nothing burger compared to his original form JACEN AND JAINA SOLO, twins born to Han and Leia 9ABY, elder siblings to the younger child anakin solo who sadly died at 16, jacen later fall in to the dark side and becoming DARTH CAEDUS…not “kylo ren” Secondly, BEN was never a child of Han and Leia, but their NEPHEW…BEN SKYWALKER, son of Luke and Mara… My personal favourite irony…disney say they want more strong female characters…and they completely ignore fan favourite MARA JADE!?!?!?!?

Thank you so much for reacting to this! It’s literally used in film classes as a prime example of pacing, setup, and payoff done right. The perfect beginning to a perfect trilogy, in my opinion. If you loved this one, you’ll love the other two. Thanks and enjoy! EDIT: ok, NEARLY perfect, trilogy, there are some retcons introduced later…
@ghyslainabel
@ghyslainabel Жыл бұрын
The trilogy is really good, yes, but I would not say perfect. - Some setups are forced, in the "as you know" style. - The chicken/yellow insult is introduced randomly in the second movie. - There are some overacting that would be more suitable for a stage than a movie. - Some running gags, especially in the third movie, are there because they are running gags, to the detriment of the story. These movies have flaws, but they deserve to be watched and rewatched.

20:55 It was a stroke of _brilliance_ they pulled with the dynamic between George and Lorraine. Initially, her heart went out to him because he was the little lost puppy that her father hit with the car, so she agreed to go with him to the _Enchantment Under the Sea_ dance. This set the two of them up to kiss for the first time on the dance floor and that set her up to spend the rest of her _life_ with him. But subsequently, he stole her heart by _blooming_ as the knight in shining armor that came to her _rescue_ in her time of _need._ _This_ set the two of them up to kiss for the first time on the dance floor that set her up to spend the rest of her life with him.

This is one of the few movie theater experiences as a kid that I will never forget. This movie in the theater is like no other. Acting schools actually study "Back to the Future" as "the perfect script". There's a documentary on Netflix called "The Movies that Made Us" and there's a chapter dedicated to it. You should react to to that documentary and "The Toys that Made Us" to give you a flashback to pre-digital era toys. Powered by the imagination.

There's a subplot that's important, and it's obvious once you know it, but they don't ever make it explicit: George is left-handed. In some pockets of culture, even as recently as the 80s, there have been people who think that being left-handed is evil, and they will force left-handed kids to use their right hands, usually leading to problems (mental, physical, and practical) later in life. In the first timeline that we see, before Marty goes back, George is still living as if he were right-handed, and as such is still just as awkward and inept as when he was a kid. In the timeline that got created because of Marty's intervention, one of the most important events was when George's right hand was disabled by Biff, forcing him to use a left hook. After the punch, George is staring at his left hand in amazement. He's not just astonished that he decked Biff, he's suddenly realizing how good it felt to use his left hand like that. The new confident George we see in the new timeline, after Marty gets back, is a proud lefty.

Truly a phenomenon. 1 of 2 films that starred a Michael J. Fox in the same year while doing the tv series, Family Ties. Christopher Lloyd's most iconic role (still) among many roles. Huey Lewis and The News with their 2 songs are still great. No.1 film of 1985 and Oscar-winner for Best Sound Effects Editing. Wendie Jo Sperber (Marty's sister) passed away in 2005. By all means, please react to the sequels as they are perfection too.

I miss the 1980s (I first saw this movie at age 29, when it was new, in a movie theater.) and had seen Michael J. Fox and Christopher Lloyd in TV sitcoms (Fox in "Family Ties" as a conservative Republican youth living with his sisters and liberal, former hippie parents) and Lloyd, a few years earlier, in "Taxi," where (in 1983 he still had dark hair) he played one of the cabbies; his character was an eccentric a bit like Doc. I'd also seen Lloyd as the villain in "Who Framed Roger Rabbit?" another 80s movie well worth reviewing, about cartoon characters ("toons") living among humans in a section of LA. Amazing that Lloyd, who's done a slew of other movies, is still active in his 80s. Fox, who married the woman who played his first "Family Ties" girlfriend, is in his early 60s and an advocate for research to cure Parkinson's Disease, whose symptoms first beset him in the 80s and early 90s about the time the BTF sequels were made. In my opinion this movie needed no sequels, but it generated such a clamor for more (not to mention financial profit) that the producers had to give in. No doubt you've seen the history of BTF including how Fox, the movie makers' first choice, eventually was cast to replace another actor, Eric Stoltz, who in their opinion was wrong for the part of Marty; by then the "Family Ties" producers had agreed to let Fox do the film as well as the TV show (which stretched his schedule, deprived him of a lot of sleep, and sometimes made him call his TV dad "Doc" by mistake, according to articles I've read.) Thanks for the nostalgia. (I was born in 1956 and vaguely remember those old cars and storefronts, etc., from my early childhood. Now it's time for me to "make like a tree and LEAVE" (to correctly quote the phrase that the 1955 BIff screws up.)

Can we just appreciate for a moment that Doc allowed Marty to get some sleep before returning to 1985 at the end? Like, think about it: 1955 Doc intended for Marty to return to 1985 at the exact moment he'd left. But the new Doc left 1985 at night and returned to 1985 in the morning. That was a conscious decision, when to reappear in 1985. He could've returned the moment after he left, at night, while Mary was standing outside. Instead he thought, "I'll let Marty get some sleep and pop back into 1985 after breakfast." I feel that's never properly acknowledged.

Fun Fact: The ending wasn't meant to be a setup for a sequel. It was originally intended to imply that Marty and Doc will continue to have adventures. But due to being such a hit, Universal approached Zemeckis and Gale to do a sequel, and they decided to do two, and wrap them up as a trilogy. Due to them having the rights to the BTTF story, they have both sworn that there wouldn't be any reboot for as long as they live. However, there have been some continuations, with a bulk of them having Bob Gale involved with them (including the Tell-Tale Games' Back to the Future: The Game and a comic series).

The thing I just realized about Doc is that, he's always known about Marty, and the time travel adventure. So for YEARS he just lived his life, knowing he would eventually meet Marty for the "first" time. Imagine that interaction from his perspective, with his foreknowledge. How he would probably see the kid Marty, knowing what he has in front of him, adventure wise, and smiling to himself all the time. Knowing he has that date with a machine gun later in life, and STILL decides to do everything else in his power to maintain the course of events. That's still a lot of guts there, to know the day of your potential execution, and deciding "hey maybe a bullet proof vest will be enough."

Did you notice that when Marty first goes to meet Doc Brown the sign at mall says "Twin Pines Mall". After Marty comes back, the sign reads "Lone Pine Mall". This is because after Marty crashes into Old Man Peabody’s barn, he runs over one of a pair of pine trees in Peabody’s front yard after being chased away with the shotgun. Peabody owned the land where the mall was later built. That is a cool little easter egg.

Thomas F. Wilson (Biff) is a cool guy in real life. He does stand-up comedy where he talks about his time on the _BTTF_ sets. At first, Tom had a really difficult time playing Biff because *he* was bullied as a child. Tom actually hates bullies. During the almost-rape scene, he was being too gentle with Lea Thompson (Lorraine). Lea had to take him aside and almost yell at him to be rougher with her or else he wouldn't sell the scene. Whatever she said, it worked. Back in 2015, there was a big revival of _BTTF_ centered around the time Doc, Marty and Jennifer traveled to in the second movie. They brought back all 3 films in the theaters, and many of them would show the entire trilogy back-to-back-to-back. What a butt-number (as in your butt would get numb from being stationary for that long) that must have been.

This movie is a rare thing; a perfect film. I judge movies by what they are trying to be, and how well executed. This is perfect because everyone nails their job. The director, the cast, the writing, the set design.... Everyone straight up nails their job. A few other films make this list. Raiders of the Lost Ark... Star Wars.... The Blues Brothers.... Others too. But every now and again you get a classic for all time that just hits on all cylinders and every scene, every detail is perfect in the context of what they are trying to do. These films are elite. Case studies on what happens when everyone kills it in their job. Everyone involved in this film should be damned proud of their work. They have a right to to be. Everyone kills it. Silverstone's soundtrack... The editing.... Even the effect as old as they are.... This is what a perfect film looks like. Take notes.
