Back to the Future Part III (1990)
Back to the Future Part III is a 1990 American science fiction Western film and the third installment of the Back to the Future trilogy. The film was directed by Robert Zemeckis, and stars Michael J. Fox, Christopher Lloyd, Mary Steenburgen, Thomas F. Wilson, and Lea Thompson. The film continues immediately following Back to the Future Part II (1989); while stranded in 1955 during his time travel adventures, Marty McFly (Fox) discovers that his friend Dr. Emmett "Doc" Brown (Lloyd), trapped in 1885, was killed by Buford "Mad Dog" Tannen (Wilson), Biff's great-grandfather. Marty travels to 1885 to rescue Doc and return once again to 1985, but matters are complicated when Doc falls in love with Clara Clayton (Steenburgen).

The reason Doc scoffs at his dog being named Einstein is that Einstein is still alive in 1955 and many physicists didn't believe he was right. That changed. :)

To add a bit more context to Einstein's role in science. At that time period, general relativity was consider a mathematical exercise with no apparent real world applications (which is not the case), even the scientist working with it were isolated to Math departments at universities. To give you some idea, the Nobel prize was awarded to him for his work on the photoelectric effect which was important to understanding the still developing field of quantum mechanics, but as far as his most important contributions to science this one is smaller and not known much to those outside the field. The Nobel committee knew he needed to be recognized, but this was the only work they could argue had real world implications. It would not be for decades that the true extent and importance of his work would be really understood, so Doc would not think much of him at the time.

@@plowe6751 I'm not wrong. I didn't say Doc Brown held Einstein in contempt, I said other scientists did. But clearly he didn't expect Einstein to become as well known by 1985 as he did.

Since Clara wasn't supposed to exist in 1885 after early September, taking her with them was a perfectly valid idea. They deleted the scene, but Tannen shot the marshal in the back. He died in his son's arms. That's why he never showed up. Nicolette, you should react to Mary Steenburgen, Malcolm McDowell (Star Trek: Generations, A Clockwork Orange), and David Warner (Titanic, Star Trek V & VI, Star Trek: The Next Generation) in 1979's Time After Time, written by Nicholas Meyer (Star Trek II, IV & VI). H.G. Wells pursues Jack the Ripper, who escaped justice to 1979 San Francisco in a time machine that Wells created. Great movie!

Fun fact Marty (Michael J. Fox) accidentally really hang on the rope at the beginning and the production got wind of it at the last moment. Hence his voice in the next scene. It's genuine.

A couple of trivia notes .... Michael J Fox actually was choked out during the hanging scene. The band in the party scene is ZZTop they were hanging out after doing the new song and were asked to be in that scene. When they asked the train engineer about the logistics of crashing into the DeLorean he giggled and replied "ive slways wanted to do that". Fun reaction more please❤

I’ve seen it written that one of the ZZ Top members once did an interview telling that story, but apparently it’s his own revisionist history, as people associated with the filming have said everyone knew they were going to be in the movie already before that day. It’s a nice story though.

20:53 Marty grew up with a coward for a father, and hated the idea of people seeing him the same way, especially since he saw a little of the same in himself (remember his fear of rejection in the first movie). 27:57 yes, trains really did have passenger accessible emergency brakes, and some still do.

No one dug behind "E.L.B." during the past century because people probably assumed it was a tomb; there's a cemetery just outside. Marty's "western costume" with the pink is based on what 1955 Doc's idea of "westerns" are, because in 1955 western stars like Rocky Lane, Randolph Scott, The Lone Ranger, etc dressed in these outfits. Marty on the other hand, being from 1985, considers "westerns" to be something more like _"A Fistful of Dollars"_ with Clint Eastwood. Maggie McFly's line of, _"Don't you be forgettin' the 'Mrs.'!"_ was less to do with politeness and more of Maggie warning "Mr. Eastwood" that she's already married, so don't try any smooth moves.

Unlike a bus where the cord rings a bell signaling the driver that you want off, the cord on past passenger cars was tired to a value that when opened released the air pressure holding the brakes open and puts the train into emergency stop. This is called a "big hole". Same thing happens it the connecting air hoses between each car disconnect or the engineer dumps the air from the main control stand in the cab.

However, it got eventually replaced by The Simpsons Ride by the 2000s in Simpsons Land. But NOW, I believe even THAT'S being replaced by Nintendoland (if not already).

In the alternate 1985 in the second movie, the video that plays out of Biff's casino mentioned Buford "Mad Dog" Tannen. Plus, when Marty finds Biff in the sauna, a Clint Eastwood western film is playing on the TV and in that scene he also uses a metal plate as a 'bullet-proof vest.' The great thing about these movies is that everything has a payoff, if you rewatch them you'll catch so much more. Every joke and line that seems like a one-off comes back somehow. The way they connected the second and third movie to the first is amazing, because they weren't even going to make more movies. The original draft they wrote for the sequel followed some of the same story line, they go to 2015, Biff is in power because he goes back and gives himself the alamanac, George is dead, etc. However, Biff brings the alamanac to his somewhat older self in 1967 instead of 1955. Doc dresses Marty as a hippie, however apparently the people of Hill Valley are very against that and Marty actually ends up in jail. Lorraine, a flower child, bails him out when she catches wind of him in the paper. It cost $500 and now she doesn't have money for a vacation to go out and meet George. Marty does the math and realizes that's where he was supposed to be conceived, and has accidentally prevented his own birth again. It was going to be pretty different and I'm happy with the version we got.

The design of the time-train at the end of this movie has certain features inspired by The Nautilus submarine from "20,000 Leagues Under The Sea" written by Jules Verne. However I think it was the Nautilus from Disney's film adaptation and not the original design from the book. As a kid, I loved this movie because I had a fascination with steam locomotives growing up. But now I just enjoy it for the love story.

10:41 "Okay. Horses. So, he's good at shoeing horses, so if you ask someone who owns a horse, he probably knows where the _blacksmith_ is." I mean, yeah. That would probably work. But look at the town. These are the _early_ days of Hill Valley, when, apparently, it's possible to stand right in the middle of town and see the city limits in every single _direction._ It's surprising that Marty didn't try this, because he probably would've been able to pick out the _blacksmith_ shop.

28:02 Train brakes work generally in a simple way: as long as there is pressure in the brake pipe going all across the train consist, the brake remains released. You apply brakes by releasing the pressure into the atmosphere. This is mostly because it stops the train if it accidentally splits. And it stops both parts of that split train. However it also has the benefit that it makes it rather easy to create an emergency brake for the passengers, which after applying releases all the pressure, thus applying the brakes.

There was a BttF ride at Universal-Florida in the 90s. It was a motion ride, what is now called 4D. I only went the once, but as best I recall, people sat in groups of 8 (two rows of four) in a cabin, with some, 15 or 20 cabins. Supposed to represent the Delorean of course. It could pitch and roll and twist, move up, down, none of it violent or severe, of course. You faced a giant IMax type screen, which moved independently so it was surprisingly immersive, and you could not see the other cabins when seated - they were just visible to taller riders as you exited - but they might have been easier to see from the front row during the ride. Travel through a number of time periods, avoiding hungry dinosaurs. A very, very loooong, slow line is the only reason I only went once, as it was actually a lot of fun. Assuming there is still a Universal-Hollywood (went there once in the 70s, yes, I am old enough dirt calls me "sir") I would expect they had a similar ride.

14:48 It depends. Some cars may even run on it. What´s most likely to happen is that your injectors would clog, and your valve seats would get fouled due to the fuel burning slower than a regular gasoline. However, if doc wasnt in such a hurry, he would realize that he can get new fuel. First, he can just further distill the booze. If he reached over 90% of alcohol content, he would get basically a pure ethanol. Then he would have to adjust the distributor for a more advanced ignition, and it should run relatively ok for a decently long time (although the valve seats would still get slowly fouled, and the original seals would probably hate that). As an alternative, the closest source of crude oil should be about a 1 day trip by train. Its not likely that he would be able to get the precise octane number, but supplementing his home-made gasoline with ethanol additive should more or less solve that. Or just make a longer trip (about 4 days there and back by train) to the nearest oil refinery in Kern county. Another alternative would be to take his horse for a journey around the area, and buy all the medical ethanol from all the pharmacies. Yet another alternative would be to build an external booster rocket. Getting fuel isnt even that hard, all you have to do is get some calcium carbide and water, and a chamber to mix them in. All in all, there was a myriad of ways to power the car, even back in 1885. And blowing the fuel injection manifold like that is just outright impossible in real life. What would happen is that the car would either run, struggle to run, or not start at all, but never explode like that.

20:58 "Where did this thing start?" That has always irritated me about this "chicken" nonsense -- that there was no hint of it in the first film, and then the writers just created it from nowhere in Part 2 as a lazy way to generate a simple trigger for Marty. The only way I've been able to justify it in-world is to assert that the timeline changes that Marty inadvertently created at the end of Part 1 -- which, at the time, seemed all for the better -- also included this one personality change in Marty that didn't reveal itself to us until Part 2.

To be fair, the writers hadn't planned on a sequel at the time. Back To The Future was supposed to be a one off. This is also why Jennifer's screen time is so limited in the second film. They said they wish they had a time machine in order to go back and write her out of the first ending. I agree there's a better way of progressing plot for Marty to act, but if they could, they may've even added the "chicken" thing originally.

You could make endless fun discussions from the flaws in time travel movies: There are a lot of arguments on line about the gasoline problem in 1885. While it is true that someone with Doc's expertise could have made a synthetic gasoline that would have worked fine, the fact that the car was damaged by the alcohol test made that choice moot. Although I've seen arguments that they could have gotten the parts from the other car Doc put in the cave. But, that would have ruined the car that Marty used, so back to square one. But ... then they could have used another car in 1955 since many cars were capable of 85 plus. It would have just required a little more work to switch the time circuits. and on and on. So much fun!

Or they could have made a simple carburetor instead of the fuel intake manifold. If all it had to do was keep the engine running for half a minute or so to reach the 88mph, it would not take a genius to create a simple alternative solution. With train wheels instead of tires, it would take even less power to get to the required speed.

14:13 Doc could easily build a still. Today's US gas is 10% ethanol, and moonshine is ethanol - E80 and E90 is routinely used in other nations, and some racing engines use 100%- ethanol. There have been many claims of cars running on moonshine in the 50s and 60s, but no doubt it would demand a good bit of tweaking. S ok the Delorean *could* have run under its own power, but there were no roads smooth enough to run on at speed and the Delorean was too light to run on rails on its own power -steam locomotives were built big and very, very heavy for good reason, to really press the drivers onto the rails for traction, or "rail adhesion". The record speed for a steam locomoticpve, 126MPH, was set in 1938, and the famed Flying Scotsman posted the first 100 MPH run only 4 years earlier, so 88 MPH in 1885 would have sure stretched the limits of the tech used at the time.

Nicolete, you might be too young to know what this really means, but that scene with the arrow is a straight reference to Jules Verne's "Journey to the center of the Earth": en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Journey_to _the_Center_of_the_Earth

24:23 "I don't know. Maybe we can just take Clara with us." "To the future?" Why not? I mean, she was supposed to die the day you and she _met._ Every day since is a day that she has lived that she _shouldn't_ have, so you would not really be disrupting the timeline all _that_ much. She would have to undergo a period of adjustment, because as out of place as the Doc and Marty are in 1885, she would be a lot _more_ out of place in _1985._ That's the only consequence I would describe as negative, and it means that you and she can stay _together._ Isn't that worth it?

You are right, this trilogy can’t be beat. Indiana Jones (the first 3) comes in a close second though and them perhaps the first 3 Jason Bourne movies.

Great reaction Nicolette like always. this trilogy is the best love every single movie, there are some fun-facts about this one. During the scene where Mad Dog Tannen and his cronies are attempting to hang Marty after their disagreement in the saloon, Michael J Fox accidentally got hanged for real for a short time, making him pass out for a few moments. The producers asked Clint Eastwood for permission to use his name and he was happy and thrilled to say yes. The band ZZ Top were hanging around on the set of the film, and ended up portraying the band at the town party. There were some technical issues whilst filming and, whilst repairs were taking place to get them fixed, ZZ Top took requests from the cast and crew and gave a small concert. Thomas F Wilson, who plays Mad Dog Tannen, did all of his own horse riding and horse stunts during the film. Not only that, but he also lassoed Marty. When Marty arrives back in 1985, the Delorean is quickly destroyed by a freight train. When it came to arranging the scene to be filmed, the producers asked the driver of the freight train whether hitting the car would derail the train, as they didn’t want to cause too much carnage. The driver shrugged it off, saying, ‘I’ve been waiting my whole life to do this. And the set of the Old West Hill Valley was used 4 years earlier for Pale Rider - a western starring none other than Clint Eastwood, which hit cinemas in 1985. Keep up the good work.

Please react to Dead Again (1991), starring Sir Kenneth Branagh (Harry Potter), his then-wife Dame Emma Thompson (Nanny McPhee), Wayne Knight (Seinfeld, Jurassic Park, 3rd Rock from the Sun), *Robin Williams,* and Sir Derek Jacobi (Nanny McPhee, Cadfael), in a murder mystery across time. Super amazing score too, that made me buy the CD soundtrack!
