I think you guys greatly underestimate how inconvenient auto-mail is. Auto-mail is made of metal obviously, so it's really heavy. Also, metal conducts both heat and cold very well, so Ed's limbs become blisteringly hot in the summer and freezing cold in the winter. Like Winry mentions, there's a constant buzzing and whirring from the machinery inside, and I even remember seeing somewhere that the reason Ed wears so much black is to hide the oil stains from his auto-mail.

With this episode being when older Winry is introduced, I have to point out a strength of the show I've noticed as I'm watching, and it's how well written the female cast is. Shounen anime is unfortunately known to rarely have more than one (or if any at all) well written female characters per series, but FMAB is definitely not one of those. The female cast is made up of interesting, quirky and strong female characters that are all unique and have different motivations and character development. The female cast is definitely one of, if not the best in shounen anime.
@teddybear9792 жыл бұрын
Agreed. Even though it's not as great as aot, fmab is one of the best shounens in that department and the manga was written in the early 2000s too, when other shounen weren't even close to the way fma portrayed its female characters. The main difference between aot's and fmab's portrayal of their female characters is that aot tries to paint a world where misogyny almost doesn't exist at all, where fmab, having its world being clearly based on the 20th century portrays a lot of the gender roles and characters' ways of seeing gender, of that period. I think both shows succeed at creating amazing female characters.

Another thing to point out ; the author of Fullmetal is a women. Of course, it's not the only explanation and some men create good women characters, but in the field of shounen in Japan, it explained a lot of why this manga is so different in the scenery since it's through.
@Vael2212 жыл бұрын
Honestly having an actual CAST of female character and not like, one character, is a huge boon in this regard too. I've seen this discussed about Arcane too, but it really allows the characters to be complex or flawed or just exist in a way that can be rather difficult when there is only one or two. Like, imagine what that would say if Trisha and Mrs. Bradly were the only female characters. One's major purpose is to be dead and motivate the boys, and the other exists almost entirely as an extension of her husband. That would definitely suck, and would say a lot (intentionally or not) about the author's view of women. But because the cast is so broad, they can exist in those spaces and it can work without standing out.
@fajarkurniawan94342 жыл бұрын
The female characters are so well written without being woke feminist. Hollywood must learn from manga how to write strong female character.

LOL, I love Montana's psychological perspective in these reactions. Winry stays up 3 days and nights with very little if any sleep and when she discovers a forgotten bolt Montana's first thought is Winry's subconscious sabotaged Ed's automail so she could see him again. Granted it's not impossible, but given how passionate Winry is about her automail, sleep deprivation seems the more likely culprit. Looking forward to the next reaction!

I just realized today how different the show would be if Winry hadn't forgotten that screw SPOILERS: If she had put it in properly, then she never would have had to go to central. The fifth lab would have worked out way differently, but not necessarily in a way that broke Ed's arm. Then she would never have met Hueghes, never gone to Rush Valley to deliver the baby, never apprenticed for Garfel. That means that Ed and Al wouldn't have met Ling when they did, which set up the S-Tier Ling-Greed-Bradley-Wrath dynamic. And as Winry hasn't met Heughes in this timeline, she wouldn't go back with them and learn about his death. She then would never have learned about what Scar did, and she's a major part of his arc as well. It's fair to say Winry forgetting to put in that screw is what made alchehestry the saving portion of the show that it was.

The pain of reconnecting nerves isn't the only draw back of automail. Ed has to deal with all the pains and issues anyone with two amputated limbs has to deal with, including the fact that he can't feel anything in his prosthetic arm and leg,. Plus, he has to work a little harder to use them than he would his original limbs since they are heavy, mechanical devices responding to muscles and nerves and not cyborg parts with circuits and electricity that could respond more readily like cyborg or robotic limbs in some science fiction stories.

This episode is definitely a pick me up after all the terrible emotions that come from the previous 2. Even if it’s sad, it’s a reminiscence kind of sad. Alex Louis Armstrong has the exact same disdain for shirts that Edna Mode has for capes. Well…not that intense but that man does NOT want to have a shirt on. Winry is an awesome character. One of my favorite things about her is how she treats people around her completely different. She and Pinako are a team always in synch. Al is a brother to her she always has a sense of casualness with. And Ed….well…quite literally no one she knows better. Most characters have net treatment with one personal relationship when it comes to shows like this. Or at least that was the norm prior. Might have adapted more due to MHA and FMA. But Winry is prime example of just how much these characters feel like real people. We all have specific ways around various kinds of people. Also, when a person tells you this is the devil’s research after stealing it following a WAR, you know it should be one to be wary about. Not that Ed and Al don’t have their own fair share of hellish experiences…less than 10 episodes in.

I don't even think Alphonse even notices he is acting different now. Major Armstrong is on of my favourite characters ever, it is just so entertaining to watch him chew the scenery and steal every scene he is in. And yet he is still a well rounded enough character, that he can be put in more serious and down to earth scenes, without it coming of as jarring. The author must love him as well, as she put him into her next big series, silver spoon, as well, even if it was a completely different genre. Seeing him as a gym teacher (and with a full set of hair) was awesome.

The things it knows and does are not derived from some sacred, unknowable, and immeasurable energy from a divine source. I am so confused how you guys are able to be one of the few KZbin channels that puts almost the entire episode into your reactions. I know you have the little comment breaks, but like it seems like a lot of other channels have to blur the footage and mute a lot of the audio and all sorts of things.

8:15 Not in real life alchemy lore. The drawback is you need to reach complete enlightenment to create and use one. In the show... well you'll see.

And Ed/Win is only the second or third best ship in the show.

@@lilshmet4167 Royai (Mustang and Hawkeye) are my personal favorite ship in all of anime. Al and Mai seem to get together after the show, and knowing fandoms there are several others

@@alexanderwheeler3943 Yeah. It's really just those three, and EdWin's at the top for me. I guess there's also Izumi and Sig. Not to mention Hohenheim and Trisha.

Can yous please do a reaction video for The Sacred Star of Milos. It's a movie-special for the original Full Metal Alchemist series, but it's really good.

I love Winry's character, but man oh man, the way the camera pervs over her body makes it hard for me to stan her sometimes.

Just pay extra attention to Armstrong when he's shirtless to balance it out.

To be fair, a lot of the times the camera "pervs over her body" is shots we're supposed to be interpreting as from Ed's POV which at least fits (and would be something I think we'd be intended to understand she probably wouldn't mind that much as their interest in each other seems mutual and not just physical for either). To me at least that feels somewhat different to it being done JUST for the audience.
