*Something the anime doesn't mention is this:* Ed brings up that Alchemists will disguise their research so it isn't stolen or misused. What the anime leaves out is how he and Roy disguise their research. Ed disguises his research as a travel journal of all the places he's been. Roy on the other hand, well, he disguises his as a list of all the women he's dated, which is both very clever and absolutely hilarious (also one of the reasons why Roy is always often thought of as a womanizer). 😂🤣😂🤣

This show plays with a lot of references to the real-world history of alchemy. For example, while they didn't usually use code as we understand it today, medieval and Renaissance alchemists did use a lot of metaphor and poetic language to intentionally make their notes difficult for laypeople to understand. So for example, a trained alchemist would know that "green lion" (which Ed mentions in this episode) means a mixture of nitric acid and hydrochloric acid, but anybody else would be confused. Another historical nod in that same scene is the reference to "Flamel's Codex"; Nicholas Flamel was a 14th century scribe. In the 17th century, legends suddenly sprang up that he was an alchemist and had made a philosopher's stone, and alchemical texts claimed to have been written by him started circulating. The symbol on Ed's coat is actually called Flamel's Cross and is from an illustration in those writings of a crucified snake, symbolizing a whole bunch of things, some of them spoilery. Anyway, apparently in the FMA world Flamel really was an alchemist and those writings are a legit alchemy text. There's even sort of a historical precedent for the philosopher's stone being made of people. Francis Bacon, famous for being one of the first people in Europe to describe and argue for something like the modern scientific method, argued that human blood might be a good starting material from which to try to make a philosopher's stone.

The Flamel's Cross, or Crucified Snake, is a symbol that goes back to the time of the Exodus. While the Israelites were wandering the desert, they were afflicted by snakes who bit and sickened many of them. God instructed Moses to raise a bronze snake on a stick to cure them. This is seen as the precursor to the Crucifixion of Christ, as well as the origin of the Greek symbols of the Caduceus and the Staff of Asclepius. The Caduceus is two snakes coiled around a winged staff, which is the symbol used for modern medicine, and the Staff is a single snake coiled around a rod and is also used in some medical symbolism.

The truth of Marco's research shows one of those sneaky applications of the law of equivalent exchange. As per the voiceover at the start of earlier episodes "in accordance with this law, human transmutation is strictly forbidden, for what could equal the value of a human soul?" A normal person thinks: "Nothing I have to trade would equal the value of a human soul, better not try it." A sick bastard thinks: "I can get my hands on a human soul... what would equal it's value if I were to use it as an alchemical ingredient?" The stone does not actually allow you to bypass the law of equivalent exchange. Those feats of alchemy are paid for in full.

@DaDunge2 жыл бұрын
A true stone might but we never see a true stone.
@cobusvanderlinde68712 жыл бұрын
@@DaDunge If we were to go with the idea that a "true stone" would circumvent the law of equivalent exchange, then it is fundamentally impossible for one to exist at all. Seeing as you won't have the true stone to begin with, what exactly do you sacrifice to gain the ability to never have to sacrifice for anything ever again? You would need to satisfy equivalent exchange for any and all possible transmutations all at once. You are not going to manage that ever. So that rules out producing a "true stone" via alchemy. As for the natural generation of a true stone, the show makes it quite clear that the law of equivalent exchange is not limited to alchemy but generally applies to all natural (and some arguably unnatural) processes (it's a fundamental law of the universe, the alchemists just bargain with it more extensively and more directly than anyone else), thus we can safely rule out the natural generation of a true stone on the same grounds. conclussion: a "true stone" as you have described cannot exist within the logic of FMA. It would actually break the logic of the setting.

I love that you’re using Armstrong’s MOST SUSPICIOUS flex constantly. That is such a good placeholder. XD So here’s why the kids are not known throughout the entire military. A State Alchemist is of the same authority as a Major. And those outrank Privates, Corporals, Warrant Officers, Sargents, Lieutenants, AND Captains. I imagine I’m missing others but that is a TON of militaristic authority. And because of the knowledge required to get the quick promotion to that level, you are obviously INCREDIBLY well funded. And they gave that kind of authority to a child. Ed doesn’t have a staff or anything, but the authority alone makes the lesser ranks give him high respect. (Not a good look for the military to say to every lesser rank a child completely outclasses you.) With the exception of Mustang’s crew who are more or less their stand-in family in the military. Considering Ed’s direct superior is Mustang. The higher rank, the longer your leash. And that’s why they can talk so frankly and openly with Colonel Hughes. (Who is just a family guy in general and looks for any excuse to insert someone in his family like Sheska.) The philosopher’s stone is…a REALLY dark truth. When it bypasses the laws of equivalent exchange and SERIOUSLY boosts your abilities AND gets you to take actions you ordinarily could never. All that is a very useful thing to try and mass produce for stronger soldiers. And least we forget Emestris is the equivalent of Nazi Germany. We might be rooting for the protagonists of the story, but these uncomfortable realities is the equivalent of being patriotic without realizing right next door to you there could be a secret laboratory run by a mad man trying to figure out if you torture one twin does the other feel the identical pain. Forget that “doctor’s” name but I do remember researching him. And I think Dr. Marcoh is more or less a “good” version of said doctor. And now begins the 5th laboratory arc. Another arc I prefer in the 2003 version for the extended aspect of it, (and other things) but this is a VERY important section of the show.

7:40 "Reconstruct it with alchemy" : To do that, Ed would have to know what the books contained - remember the three steps of Alchemy in FMA - Understanding, Deconstruction, Reconstruction. Fun fact, the coded book was a reference to how historical alchemists kept their notes. They would use words like sulfur, salt, and mercury to hide concepts dealing with the soul, body, and mind respectively and would use specific language to encode their ideas. Since alchemy was occultic in nature it was better to hide what you were studying. For example the green lion of metallurgical alchemy talked about in this episode is a symbol used to illustrate one of two things (its not really clear as the notes were always encrypted for a reason) but it was usually either to talk about plant life in its ability to create energy, or the purification of matter to create purity, usually lead into gold.

Something to note about that “bunch of words” when they start talking about “green lion” and “Flamel’s Codex,” both of those are real things. The Green Lion swallowing the sun, and Flamel, the supposed creator of the Philosopher’s stone in real life. Even Ed’s coat has Flamel’s cross on the back. Real alchemy is really cool to research on, and even a surface level reading can be really interesting, as it is also a study into philosophy as much as it is into chemistry.

This episode was the final straw for me really connecting with Edward’s character. I already loved how deeply and openly emotional he was (not really the norm for a character as arrogant and fiery as he is, it shows that they really put thought into his character rather than looking at the tropes people happen to find entertaining), but his dedication and intelligence are also huge standout traits. Especially the intelligence part, that’s another thing you don’t often get with the loud and bratty type character.

7:42 Interesting thought, and it illustrates one of the points they made about alchemy a bit clearer - an alchemist needs to understand something on the atomic level to transmute it correctly. Kind of like Yaoyarozu in My Hero Academia. In order to reconstruct the library, they would need to know every detail of the contents already, including what books were in there and what was written in them. Which would make reconstructing the library a moot point, as they need it to learn the contents of some of the books. The could probably reconstruct a book, but without knowing what was written in it, it would just be pages with ink blobs or random words.

Alright Kenny and Montana here’s a breakdown of the stones when it comes to my understanding. I may be wrong but I think it’s accurate. A stone can probably be created from one or two souls, but it wouldn’t be as strong as a soul made with tens or hundreds of people. The stones that disintegrated after the defeat of the possessor of the stone were made with a low amount of human lives, stronger ones and pull more feats and last longer. They’re essentially batteries and the souls are the fuel. If you put more fuel in the battery, the more powerful it becomes.

If I could make a suggestion for a reaction video, you guys should watch Inside Man from 2006. It's a Spike Lee film about a New York City bank robbery staring Denzel Washington, Clive Owen, Jodie Foster, Christopher Plummer, Willem Dafoe, and Chiwetel Ejiofor.

How do you guys feel about a shoujo anime? It is an anime that is more romance than action.
