Doing a look left and right drill after a draw with an empty gun is not as useful as reloading and then looking. You can do something if you need to with fresh ammo. I understand a drill is all that is going on but if you get in the habit of reloading an empty and looking it helps in a real situation. It is already bad enough if you have gone through the primary and need the backup still. It makes sense to have the option in the rare time you might need it, but an empty gun is not nearly as useful as having it topped off ready to be used if that look says there is another coming at you. Hope it never is so bad it gets to that point. Good video.

I also like the idea of having a backup in case you have to fight someone trying to take your primary. Its hard to punch over your right shoulder with your left hand, but grabbing and point a gun with that hand would be easier.

2 guns, HA....I carry 5 just in case I need to pass out guns to random people, or in the event my 3rd goes down from a hard ass malfunction, now my 4th becomes my primary and my 5th becomes my secondary

Steve can you go over your grip? Looks like your wrapped around trigger guard on both G19/17 and 43. Is that the norm?

+RAZORJB With his enormous hands, yes. But unless you are an NBA or NFL player the chances of having hands that size are unlikely.

Jerry Miculek does this too, sais it helps stop the front of the gun oscillating when it comes back down after recoil. Most shooters and instructors do not teach this because a) having all four fingers on the grip rather than having one extended means more force applied to the gun b) if you ever use a gun with a weapon mounted light or laser, it would interfere with your technique. Competitors do not use lights so they dont worry about b). That being said Steve's hand is so big it seem he just wouldnt be able to fit it on the gun using conventional grip.

I love the idea of ankle carry, but it hurts like hell after about two hours.

I'm not a big fan of ankle carry, too many drawbacks to it. If you're going micro for your back up gun I think a solid shoulder holster would be a smart move. I wouldn't run a shoulder holster as my primary but for the back up it's pretty ideal. As for the ankle if you can use that real estate then great. Something I've seen glimpses of is an ankle carry IFAK. Once I saw it I thought it was genius, we all neglect carrying medical equipment in our EDC and the ankle is the perfect location. Doesn't weight too much and it conceals great under pant legs. The drawback of an ankle holster is that you have to stop moving to draw your gun. Well, if you need to use your IFAK chances are you're not moving. I've only seen like three companies that make an ankle med kit and one of them has awful customer service reviews but tactical medical solutions and rescue essentials seem to have happier customers, though admittedly I don't have any experience with either. Shoulder holster for the back up gun, ankle med kit for the IFAK. Ideal.......

I don't like the ankle carry, it's not good for me. A back up pistol is a good Idea though.

Carrying a back up gun in case of catastrophic failure is a bit silly. 1 in a trillion chance at best. Arming a family member, sure.

+bludmakesgrassgrow I was told the exact same thing about carrying a gun about a week ago. I was told that I would never get into a "gun fight" so carrying a gun is silly. Better prepared than not!

bludmakesgrassgrow Not really there is documented cases of guns going down out there. Not hard to find at all. I carry one daily along with my primary. It's not that rare at all, not like you are making it out to be.

bludmakesgrassgrow plus I'm from the south so we have no basements. And where do you get the odds of using a gun are one in a million. Do you watch the news do you not see what's going on out there daily. We've had six murders already in my county this year.
