We're back working on the 1948 ford school bus that we found abandoned for over 25 years in the forest. Let's try and clean the original gas tank that is very rusty. This has gotta be the dirtiest gas tank ever and WTH do I find inside?

I know you taped this awhile ago but man, am I envious! That bus is so awesome! The moment I saw her in that tall weedy woods I knew she was going To be a gem!! I didn’t have any doubts about you getting her (yes I called her a girl too) up and moving. In this show on the gas tank though, my favorite part wasn’t when it cleaned up… nope it was the way you tossed the last three vinegar jugs and gave the look towards us 😂 Anyway thank you so much I just Love your shows!!❤

I am really surprised how well that tank cleaned up. I really thought that it was beyond hope. It's amazing how well the vinegar ate up all that rust. I've used it to unstick engine's before but you learned this ol' fart something and i ain't kidding. Still might wanna carry a few of those plastic gas filters with y'all. ✌️

Hey Thanks Jimi! Yeah I myself was completely impressed with how good it worked! I will definitely still keep a few filters on hand...lol
@alan6832
@alan6832 Жыл бұрын
@@CountryBoyGasGarage I wonder if enough fuel detergent and multiple inline filters could have allowed you to avoid removing the tank and disposing of all that fuel? Did you have detergent in the fuel when it was gumming the carburetor through the filter? how much detergent? and how many filters? I have heard that gummy fuel can gum intake valves as well as carburetors, at greater risk, but I still wonder if, say, $50 worth of detergent could have overcome all that.

@@CountryBoyGasGarage Normally it would be worthwhile to drop the tank just to clean out all that rat nest stuff, but I have an alternative for that too, firstly, a pressure washer if you have one, but then, at a self serve car wash with a pressure washer, using the wax option on the underside, including all over the outside of that gas tank.
@alan6832
@alan6832 Жыл бұрын
@@CountryBoyGasGarage Well, fuel detergent and spray wax wouldn't have fixed your sender unit, and all that rust might have clogged your pickup tube too, so it looks like there were no shortcuts on that. Kudos.

I watched a show a while back where they cleaned a gas tanks, after cleaning all the rust out and letting the tank dry they put a flash light over the opening and shut of the lights in the shop for a bit and found a bunch of pin wholes in the tank. might be something to check for if your ever clean a tank in the future

I'm a big fan of Harbor Freight myself, on their impacts the Bauer is ok if you get them loose with a breaker bar first then you can maybe you can use the Bauer impact. The Hercules line on impacts are much better. These use brushless motors that are much stronger than the brushed tools. I have a couple of the Bauer tools that don't require a great deal of strength to do their job. I have the Hercules 1/2 and 3/8 drive midsized impacts as well as the fullsize Ultra Torque and the 1/4 drive impact driver. I use them all. The first one I got was the 1/2 drive midsized. It works well til you need it to do something a bit tight. Sometimes it can't get lug nuts off. I then got the full size Ultra Torque. This one got out the leaf spring bolts the mid size couldn't. The 3/8 drive I got from their open box area for much less than regular price. I then got the 1/4 drive impact for doing repairs like on the house deck and such.

Nice job cleaning the tank. I know it's been 6 months since this video was done but putting a big square inspection plate on the top of the tank probably on both ends would have gotten better access. Drying with the busses own exhaust while cutting the holes would keep it safe to cut. My father-in-law has a 31 Ford Victoria coupe that replaced the 29 5 window body that he had an accident with. I am a welder by trade and I went over every weld on it because it was very sloppily assembled . Now it is safer on the road along with having the front end setup properly and having correct shocks. I love the bus.

I'll definitely look them up next time I'm in there. I love the music in your videos especially at the car shows. We have a large contigent of American car enthusiasts here in NZ. the shows are very popular.I remember during the late 70s early 80s there were alot of 50s,60s Chevy Belairs and impalas around when they introduced unleaded fuel here in the early 80s alot of them disappeared pretty quick alot into sheds to be preserved and a lot to the wreckers as the unleaded fuel soon buggered the engines as people failed to use the additive to compensate for the leaded fuel

Jasion OPTION 1. I would of cut the tank along the weld seams to open it up then cleaned out all the rust then re welded it back together. OPTION 2. I would of put the baking soda with the vinegar together with tin foil in the tank to get a chemical reaction to eat the rust then rinsed it out then i would of blasted hot air into it to dry it out. You may still run the risk of the filters clogging up from the rust that's still in the tank. I hope the bus continues to run well good job on the bus so far.😁😁😁😁👍👍👍👍👍👍👍

Back in my day, the way we cleaned any fuel Tank was we would get Pea gravel, and Hot Borax Powder and fill them about a quarter full, and then we made a shaker frame with a heavy mash screen and put the Tank in it and the Frame had a Pittman arm attached to a Flywheel style Pully on a half horse Electric motor and it would vibrate the tank removing all the Rust and revealing any Leaks. Then we would re solder the cracks and leaks . Pour all the gravel out and put a/2 Cup of Hot Sal's Soda with a couple really Hot water and flus the tank and it would look like a Brand New Tank.

Hi Jason, Sorry to learn of your back trouble, I was laid up with back spasms for three weeks in February and it was no picnic as I could barely walk. Be careful not to wrench it or twist the wrong way. As for that old gas tank it reminds me of the old gas tank we removed from my Uncle's 26'-0" power cruiser. He like you cleaned the tank and fiber glassed over it to reinforce it as it had to go in under the cabin floor in the boat. Your tank looks solid from the outside so if you can get the interior cleaned up you should have a good tank. Good luck with the project !

On a replacement fuel tank, Dodge uses plastic for their fuel tanks. A pick up uses a 35 gallon tank on the 1500. Not sure on the bigger pick ups or the diesel engines. You might find a tank in a salvage yard. With a bit of work you can probably get one up under that old bus. A very cool old bus but the way. Vinegar works well but isn't as fast as some other products. More a time vs cost thing on that. The vinegar you drain out can be filtered and reused. With the tank up on a set of saw horses you can use the drain plug to drain the vinegar through a coffee or paint filter out even an old sock. Then just pour it back in fo the next go around.

Great job on the gas tank, good to see that it worked out ok and you were able to re-use it. I would have filled it with water to force the gunk out of it. Just a piece of rubber from a tube would do to seal off the sensor hole and then poke the pressure washer through the rubber and hold it firmly on there. Just an idea from when i used to use an air pump to force gas out of the tank to drain it with one pipe going in (air) and one out (gas) through the rubber "patch". The air pipe being just inside and the gas pipe right down to the fuel.

Have you thought about a 2 speed rear end. That would cut down on engine noise and bring the gas mileage up a bit. I just found your channel and l really do like what you do. Keep up the great content.

Use citrus soak . 160 to 180 degree F . Put 2 pounds of powder 5 gallons water in the tank and fuel lines . Slosh the mix around then rinse with water then blow dry . This works when nothing else will . Looks like a mirror inside . . Used this for 30 yrs . Citrus soak was developed for oil spills but works for many things

Man that is one sweet old bus, time for a new gas tank IMHO, maybe run 2 filter,s someplace easy to get to, and see how it goes, until you find a replacement tank or not, look,s pretty damn clean in there honestly. ✌️❤️😁

Hard work and perseverance really paid off here! I've used vinegar on a lot of projects with good results in the past. Glad to see it worked for you and no rust holes to set you back! Careful with your back and good luck.
