Great video! I watched MaddyTheGoose channel way back when he was posting regular. Great channel and the Sheperd's Pie video is my favourite one. It is one of my favourite meals and it is especially delicious when out in the woods.....Take care, Bluefin.

It was a great channel. I have used a few of his ideas. I often wonder what he is up to these days and if he is still tripping

When using gravy mixes I like to mix them with cold water first. A little water at a time make a thick paste and slowly thin it out. I find this prevents the lumps.

That gravy would come out a lot better if you heater water up to finger hot, then dropped in the butter and powder, mixed the two together until the butter was melted and there was no powder left, then brought it all to a boil while stirring until as thick as you wanted it.
@thewildernesswanderer1406 ай бұрын
Interesting tip! I may try that next time to help keep from clumping up. The gravy does turn out fantastic, but sometimes it can have some thick, salty sections from the little clumps, but they taste good too! Thanks for watching and commenting!

Looks like a great easy meal, I wonder if I could add a few dehydrated onions, or would that be crazy?
@thewildernesswanderer1406 ай бұрын
You could add whatever you like to it. I often add onions to various meals as I love the flavor
@chado_outdoors6 ай бұрын
My only question is why didn't you dump the gravy mix in with the meat/veg, then top with the potatoes? I make a version of this in my Trangia. I, too, dehydrate all my own stuff including ready-made meals, and also like to build my own MREs out of them

To me, the presentation would be wrong and it would be hard for me to get the consistency that I want. Thanks for watching and commenting!

Do you remember what brand name of your burner is?
@thewildernesswanderer1405 ай бұрын
Yes I do! Rivertrail, which was a home brand sold by Home Hardware here in Canada years ago. It has been a great stove. I have been using this one since about 2010, and I used another identical one for my trips from 2004 until then. It got lost in a move, but I had a backup one. It has cooked a lot of meals and boiled a lot of water. Thanks for watching and commenting! - Ed

When you use beef it's actually a cottage pie not a Shepard's pie , a traditional Shepard's pie is made with lambs mince
@thewildernesswanderer1406 ай бұрын
Yes, I mention that in the video and in various other replies to comments here. Everyone here calls this "Shepherd's Pie", and basically very few people have ever even heard of cottage pie. Thanks for the comment!

That looks really good but I hate doing dishes when camping so I make everything the Freezer Bag Way. The bag from the 1st meal of the day turns into garbage bag for all the others. No pot to clean and licking the spoon cleans it. For freezer dried ( dehydrated ) items all the vegetables I get from Harmony House Foods. For fat it is ghee ( Clarified Butter ) which does not spoil since the milk impurities have been removed. Meats are dried here at the house. Each bag is marked with the necessary amount of water and it is brought to a almost boil before adding it to the meal.
@thewildernesswanderer1406 ай бұрын
I have seen that method a few times. I have tried it a couple of times, but it hasn't turned out well, and you can taste the plastic bag in my opinion. Dishes can be a pain, but my meals are so good and so filling, you look forward to supper time all day when you are out in the woods.. But they do require a lot of dishes... I would love to for you to share some of your recepies @Oldsparkey!
