Most of these open shots are a dream for eastern hunters. Usually the opportunity here is just a second between trees. No such thing as “setting up for the shot”. Granted the distances are usually much closer. Your channel is awesome.

As a new hunter I have to say thanks. I just bought a Browning AB3 in 270. My first few shots at 100 yards sighting it in were good. Boy after that they went all over the place! I was really beating myself up. I have since gotten it dialed in and taken a deer with it. But it’s good to know it wasn’t entirely me! Thanks and love your videos!

Don't shoot your hunting rifle a lot in one sitting. The barrel will heat up and the harmonics will change. Generally hunting rifles have thin barrels, target rifles have thicker barrels and take longer to heat up.

It is possible the barrel had heated up from quick shooting, as already mentioned by another post. When sighting in a rifle, you may want to wait a few minutes between shots. After a group of five, open the action and let the barrel cool for 15 minutes.

Overall I love your videos because you don't pull punches, label your opinions, and tell the viewer as much useful info as you have. Please keep up these great videos. 1. Every new/reworked rifle has a break-in period which should consist of at least 50 rounds with frequent cleanings and cool-downs. Now shoot 3 5-round groups with your proposed specific ammo to get your best group and sight for that one. If you might carry more than one type, determine the corrections needed. 2. And as to cold-bore shots - from my military experience at long ranges, @ 100 yards, there shouldn't be an effect. But as the distance increased, the 'deflection' seems to grow almost logarithmically - so test your chosen/'pet' round at several known distances and DEFINITELY write the DOPE in your notebook (or on a label pasted to your stock) so that a 2nd shot (if needed) will be on target. Ethical kills are the ONLY right ones.

I agree with what your saying about bore sighting rifles and then going out to shoot them. I work retail sporting goods, and I've told all the people young and old "this will get you on paper at 25 yards, it is YOUR JOB to take your ammo and shoot your gun to get it dialed in at 100, or whatever range you'll be shooting at. If you miss the deer, that's on you not US"

Went deer hunting with my son in laws and the two of them shot at a deer that was 70 yards away and they were both shooting 6.5 creedmoor and they both missed. The deer did not run away it just slowly moved away to about 150 yards so the guys both took a shot and missed again and as we were coming out of the blind I stopped both of them and asked you both missed at 70 yards how the heck did you two get my daughters pregnant but miss a deer with a flat shooting cartridge. Answer was the scopes were set out to 400 yards so they both shot over the deer four times, I had a good laugh but of course I didn’t take the shot and i believe I would have missed just like my boys did. Actually both my daughters are great shooters. Thanks Jim for another great video.

There can be a flourescence to blaze orange material. There are supposedly detergents to wash that out. I've only ever had one deer drop at the shot, the rest all took off running. Longest shot ever was 70-80 yards in the Sierras. When you started as a bowhunter you have to remind yourself that you can be further away than 25 yards from where they pass through.

I recommend going by your shooting range regularly take a cold shot adjust your scope off a cold shot. Every first shot you take on big game is a cold shot.

Exactly Correct ‼️ I live in Florida but hunt in WV every season. No matter which two of my rifles I take on any given year, we sight / check zero on a cold bore, every year. We literally take a shot, pack snow on the barrel, wait, and shoot again. With a proper bore sight, you should be done by 3 shots if you have gone over your rifle and made sure everything is, as it's supposed to be. Even with 3-4 of us shooting, we're done in less than an hour and ready for opening morning.

This is a great video. I only ever bow hunted, but after reconstructive shoulder surgery, I can hold the bow stable like I use to. I own a lever action (.357) and Tactical shotgun, but your videos have inspired me to pick up a bolt action. Seeing the errors people make helps so I am aware and can make all new mistakes. Jim, the new outro was more definitive thanks. I agree with you on making sure the gun is sighted in for the ammunition being shot through it. I try to buy a variety of factory loads for each chambering to determine what works the best. This also helps to break in a gun too. Recently sent 125 rounds of 308 Win. ranging from 130 gr. to 180 gr. Bullets of different constructions from cup and core, bonded, and all copper were tested. Being a Bergara all shot well and I ended up running a kyl style target rack at 200 yards to finish they day. The Remington Core Lokt Tipped and Barnes TTSX were the best performers regardless of bull weight. I was disappointed in the Hornady Precision Hunter ELD-X and Outfitter CX loadings they produced the largest groups; I think I may have made some bad shot with those. I only shot a five round group of each ammo type. More test is required as is a change in elevation on the scope, probably due to the POI shift from the Omega 300.

Reference gloves, now full disclosure I no longer hunt, but wouldn't cold weather shooting gloves help. I used winter shooting gloves when I was a cop to keep my hands warm while working traffic accidents or chasing suspect through the woods in rural areas. They keep the hands warm until your ready to shoot or more often in my case to take notes or photos. P.S. when I did hunt deer in Oklahoma no one I knew or hunted with used face camouflage or even camouflage cloths and we took deer at 100 yards or less as a rule. So I agree it is not needed for deer. Smell and noise are much bigger problems.

One thing I noticed is Muzzleloaders are far more apt to have missing issues because there are so many more things you need to pay attention to. Powder, Primers, how far you push the rod down the boar. This is when you really realize how important consistency is.

It blows my mind how many people I talk to that don’t sight in their rifles. It has been bore sighted or they sighted it in years previously and they think that is “good enough”. Those same people either go out and miss game, wound game, or pass on shots because they are unsure . I cannot understand why people don’t sight in their rifles. Just suffered the first example in this video. Shot a buck at 25 yards broad side. He dropped and was flipped over to his back and was stuffed leg. Reached over to fist bump my daughter. He got up and long story short…2 days and as many miles later we found him. I did not want to take a second shot as I thought he was mortally wounded and I had freezer plans for him. Well.. if he gets up and runs off and spoils from that a second shot is a much better option from now on.

Watching people hunt on KZbin, I also see a lot of misses/poor shots due to wind. That Randy Newberg video you showed they killed three muleys and everyone of them was shot in the guts. I’m assuming Randy’s was due to a pretty significant wobble zone, but the other guys were proned out and it was clearly wind drift. I watched another video one time where some guys were shooting at a mule deer at 700 yards, held nothing for wind, and they got lucky when the bullet drifted and hit the deer in the head.

I went stupid and bought a Christensen arms 300 win mag , mesa I believe the first 10 shots were horrible...I cleaned it after every 3 shots...let it cool....after 3 shots it was dead on....then shot 4 tp 10 were all over the place....To the point I got my 3006 and 280 ackley out to makesure they were sighted in....(I would have used my ackley but I messed up my brass reloading it, my bad....wasn't focused enough I guess) and that 300 was everywhere shot 4 and 5 were 7 inches high So I adjusted down... I mean within 1/8 of an inch of each other...then next 2 shots were low by 5 inches...4 inches apart....then to the right....3 inches... then shot 11 or 12... I adjusted the scope one last time...and it was dead on....I mean dead on....and it held....I was ready to send it back, that is how bad it was.....I know it held because I killed a muley in colorado 3 weeks ago with it....I wish I would have waited and bought the 7prc...but I didn't....btw this christesen arms stock feels like a toy guy.. I don't like it but everything else seems fine...( I won't buy another one after this one wasn't what I was expecting)

I find the right tool for the job works well. 284 and 308 cals. For deer and up. 6mms are for varmints, the apostle Paul said well 1cor 13-11. That will save on 2nd shots.

After 35 years of hunting in north central British Columbia and talking with other hunters, the No. 1 problem I've encountered is how ignorant many hunters are about the amount of bullet drop they're dealing with over various distances. The majority had zeroed their rifle at 100 yards because that's the distance at their local range (or gravel pit). When asked about bullet drop at say 400 yards, they usually had no clue. "Oh, my 7mm Rem Mag shoots flatter than a pancake. It's flat out to at least 800 yards." When I tell them that with a 100 yard zero, at 400 yards they likely have 24 inches of drop and at 700 yards it's likely about 7 or 8 feet, they look at me like I'm crazy.

In Germany you actually need to undergo training to become a hunter. It's typically a nine month course (allthough there are "quick courses" of a couple of weeks). You need to study many different topics, such as wild game biologie, forest ecology, wild game deseases and hunting law. Plus shooting training. In German hunting "culture" it is imperative - after a shot - to stay on target in case you need to give off a second shot. Of course there are black sheep as well

I learned to hunt by myself. My father didn’t own guns so I had to learn on my own. But even when I’ve hunted with my brothers, anytime we got a deer, there was always a period of time afterward that I’d describe as quiet reverence. Excited to get all that meat, but respectful of the deer in its last moments. And grateful to God that He gave us this place. Another main reason hunters miss is that their trigger pull has too much creep and/or is too heavy or the trigger is too light and if the hunter shoots with gloves or touches the trigger before the cross hairs are on the animal, it will cause premature shootulation. You video was informative and hopefully will help hunters prevent some misses.

Harris (S) series bipods in the 23"-25" range, are the best thing ever. Doesn't matter what incline or back rest you have, or need any at all. Just sit there and open it up. Been on some pretty steep stuff with other shooters that didn't have one and, lets just say um, they did not do so good. Best thing ever and just connects to your swivel sling stud. Face paint is to reduce reflection off your skin. As deer see a slightly shifted spectrum of light than we do deer do not see the color orange or red, it appears as a green or brown to them. However deer do see slightly beyond the blue spectrum we have. Blues will stand out to deer like crazy. No blue jeans

FYI for any spine / neck shot. A deer that goes down by folding its legs and doesn't move around on the ground is normally dead as disco. Any deer that goes down like the one in the first vid... rears up and over, or falls over sideways with stiff legs like a boxer that has been knocked out, is very likely to reboot and run off. It's pretty easy to see when you know what to look for. Folded legs and little movement = dead Stiff legs then kicking on the ground = shot again.

In lue of a back rest, I prefer to wrap my left arm through the sling and pull me to the gun and vs verses. But your best defence is to practice different shooting angles regularly. Didn't you do that in the arm forces? The Prone, kneeling and standing. Try laying on one side or the other, and sitting on slants. Or try shooting down from hill. That one actually helps me when I'm back east in my 25ft pod shooting down at fox, responding to my caller under me.

Thanks for the video, I shot 2 nice bucks this year inside 100 yards but I seem to miss a lot past 200. My confidence level is down right now, so I ended up getting my first precision rifle to make me feel a little better, lol. Next is to get some good glass and break in the rifle. And then taking some milk jugs out to 250, 300 yards and practice, practice practice. Oh, also work on the trigger squeeze and get the nerves calmed down from seeing a wall hangers. It’s also a bad feeling thinking your scope might be off, taking a shot to verify after a wall hanger miss finding out it’s not the scope, it’s just me.

I'm 50YO and I've been hunting since I was 12YO. I've only had to shoot a deer with a center fire rifle more than once one time in all that time. I don't understand shooting a deer twice unless you're a terrible shot or just yank one like I did one time. Edit: I don't take risky shots and I use a caliber that works usually something in the 30 cal flavor.

Another would be not allowing for the rising bullet when shooting downward steep angle or upward. I've seen this happen a lot. Scope kiss (black eye or a cut) when shooting an upward angle is something people forget about but soon remember fast lol. Forgetting the bolt is also a favourite lol

Just to clarify: the Bullet doesn’t rise on a steep downward angle, it just drops less because you are shooting less than 90 degrees to the pull of gravity. Just trying to clear this up so some folks don’t have the wrong idea.

When it's close you don't dial (we'll everyone I know doesn't) .Time is a key factor in hunting as every hunter knows and lots of times the rangefinder will not be used at close ranges because you don't have the time to fluff about. Aim low shoot low (steep angle downwards) aim high shoot high (steep angle upwards) is what we we were taught.

@@kiwihunter2011 , that's why I use Point Blank Range sighting in. At 100 yards you're 2.5-3" high, and you can center your crosshairs on the lungs and shoot out to 300 yards. Up or down angle won't matter, you're still in the heart/lung area.

As someone that grew up running dogs for deer using shotguns, that individual that got ran over by a small buck needs to hang it up. Wide open with no obstructions, except the first shot, he needs to step back and rethink what happens and how to react.

I missed a coyote at 200 yards went home and picked another rifle I was 100% sure of and did the trick later that evening. My first rifle was a little off and all I needed was that first round.

I was hunting up in Virginia with a young man, Adeer surprised him and almost ran over him and he fired his shotgun 3 times. I went straight over on the other side of the ridge to him and said do you think you hit him? He said oh yeah...we were looking for blood and a 3" limb fell that was hit by Buckshot from 15 up! No blood, complete miss. That's when he told me the deer nearly ran over him, I guess he was a little excited

The craziest thing is hunting a place/region where you can scatter some attractant on the ground in the wide open and a mature buck comes to it in daylight. I've been in my hunt club in the pine and briar thickets in eastern NC for 15 years and I've seen 2 mature bucks...total. Bring some "experts" out here

The video reminded me of a grizzly bear hunt where the hunter’s first shot knocked the bear down, just like that deer. Being then and now, an absolute skeptic of the “knockdown power” theory of anything, including the belted magnum caliber that this actual “white hunter” from Africa was using to shoot his first Alaskan Grizzly, I remained behind the gun, crosshairs on what little I could see of the “dead” bear. It had collapsed into a depression. And like that deer, it laid there until it wasn’t. The bear's recovery did not come with an escape; it had mayhem in its heart-an initial range of less than 100 yards. When the hunter took his next shot as the bear came our way faster than a greyhound out of the gate, the miss also looked like the one in the video. Later, after things quieted down, it was determined that the scope mount had somehow worked loose.

4:00 to about 5:00 - There are actually two (2) visible rabbits behind that deer, both quite a few yards past the deer - one of them is seen just to the right of the deer's tail, the other one (who ends up getting nailed) above and behind. Wow! I vote yes, go get the bunny and eat it! Better to eat rabbit than to eat crow.
