What’s a gaylord? Am I hearing this right?

It’s like a big fruit box at the fruit markets full of watermelons lol The Americans tend to use them more then we do in Australia. They are common for book and media sellers to buy bulk inventory in. Basically a big box on a pallet full of inventory and wrapped around then in plastic.

@@mrststreasures9628 Gaylord: This specific style of box derives its name from the Gaylord Container Corporation, which was based in St. Louis, Missouri, during the first half of the 20th century. This company filed patents for several unique designs. Even though its packaging design innovations left a lasting impression, gaylord boxes are the only containers that still carry the name of this defunct brand. Businesses and farmers came to rely on gaylord boxes for transporting products and fresh produce. This style, which fits on a pallet and usually includes a lid, is still used for these purposes today. The cartons are also referred to by generic terms, including bulk boxes or bulk bins, as well as pallet, skid or tote boxes.

Really great chat. My first job at 15 was as a watercolour print colourist for the leading antique map business in the UK in the 70s. We would colour prints and maps removed from damaged antique books which were then mounted and framed and sold all over the World. Happy times and probably set me on the road to being an online seller too.

And they were sold worldwide without benefit of the internet! I knew someone who did this map colouring for a bit, it was for a dealer in London’s Kings Road area I seem to remember, but more 1980s era. Don’t know if it was the same business you speak of.

@@vintagevic4593 The business was P J Redford based in Denmead Hampshire. He was considered to be an expert in the field. He lived in a pretty thatched cottage and we worked in a converted pig sty which was actually quite nice. The books were stored in a lovely old barn in the grounds. He wrote several books about antique maps as well. The business moved to Sheffield Park in Sussex.

This was a fabulous interview - I learned so much! I sell many things, including books, and I do love non barcode books. My parents were going through my grandfathers old storage yesterday and it's chock full of books. They were sending me pictures of some of the books and they were surprised at what I was saying yes or no to. No to the generic history books, but then they told me about a book about graveyards in Rhode Island - I knew that book was going to be good. When I Googled it, the few that were out there sell for over $100. I love finding the books that are on a very specific topic...

He is a great example of what I've been doing, but, he is a success; I am just in my infancy and began to wonder if there was a market there for the kind of books I list, as my sales are so low. I tend to grab the old books without bar codes that the scanners leave behind, using my knowledge, rather than my phone. Thanks for this video, as it is inspiring to see someone who is so successful in this niche.
