I just dug up a tiny sycamore seedling this morning and can’t wait to try to make my second attempt at a bonsai with it!

I have a few Sycamore bonsai myself but be aware that only the European Sycamore is part of the Acer family of trees so the leaf size may not reduce much.. I plan on making my a larger type bonsai. The American Sycamore has that Beautiful white peeling bark and leaves sometimes the size of dinner plates.. but the Catalpa tree has even larger leaves but I've gotten it to reduce the size of silver dollars so don't give up

I just realised this is the first video on your channel I watched. I was a bit confused at first until I learnt what bonsai was and it's inspired me to start my own collection of bonsai.

Cheers. Hopefully you’ve got a few trees on the go now. :)

That sycamore is a remarkable grower! Great idea to do the bud pinching. I also have one in a big bucket-size pot, too long internodes but I'm just fattening it up for now. Apparently you can tell the British sycamore because they have red leaf stems all year. Great video!! 🍺👍🏻
@BackGardenBonsai4 жыл бұрын
They are aggressive growers! I find the internodes get long too. I guess that's why it's on so many peoples hated list lol. I'm sure we will both tame that one day. Also good tip about the red stems. i'll have to keep my eyes out for any fakers.

@@BackGardenBonsai I tried googling sycamore red leaf stem and couldn't find any information on it. admit I didn't try very hard though lol. A friend here who started a tree nursery a few years ago gave me this sycamore (as an exchange for some red oak seedlings that I didn't want) and he told me about the red leaf stems, saying it made it unusual for here. Since then I just accepted what he said without doing any more research... could be complete ballony! But it's true the sycamores in the streets here have green leaf stems so who knows.
@BackGardenBonsai4 жыл бұрын
well, the ones here have red stems. So if hes talking jive, its some weird coincidence. i'm gonna believe him. I like the idea of it lol

This is awesome man! I love how you film the progression of the tree over the whole year! That's gonna be a lovely wee tree in 5 years time!

I've roppotted a 3ft tree like this from my front garden which was just a shoot when I moved in then in the new pot I've got a small new tree growing which I think is the same species so Im going to repot it next year and try to bonsai it 👌
@BackGardenBonsai2 жыл бұрын
yeah do it! they are terrible for bonsai, but still a lot of fun! :)

What a healthy seedling, I really like the colour and texture of the new growth. 👌

yeah the leaves are cool. They get a bad rep as they can get a bit big, but when small they look lovely :)

Broski...the pruners you used had me laughing...what a cool species. I love speedy growers. Cheers 😎🍺🍺

I must have been pruning something else before hand and only had these with me. I’m way to lazy to just go back inside and get some smaller scissors lol.

"I'm here to oppress, not impress" 😂 Brilliant! We all have that one rabid growing tree in our collection that we have to beat into submission. Gonna say this line every time I give mine a hard prune.

Why not let it grow unchecked for the season to thicken the trunk, then, cut it way back?
@BackGardenBonsai4 жыл бұрын
I could do that, but I've loads of other trees I'm doing that technique with. So why not test to see what happens when I abuse a tree like this lol. It's also a ridiculously course grower, long internodes, big leaves... all the stuff you dont really want. So I'm seeing what will happen if I try and avoid letting all those bad bits develop. Its a free tree that isnt ideal, so I dont mind wasting my time seeing what happens.

@Back Garden Bonsai (I know this is 2 years old.. ) I've 3 seedling from conkers.. They have just started sprouting there second leaves.. I'm going to try different methods on them. 😊

@Back Garden Bonsai I've been watching Heron bonsia with Peter 😊 He is sharing All his knowledge.. Watching him pot a sapling from 2/3 years growth He just lopped off all the leaves to just a stick with couple buds at the top! 😱 brutal to watch but that's what you gotta do to encourage a thicker trunk.. Thank you for your vids.. I'm learning 😊👍

Those sycamores are pretty vigorous. I have several in the ground that I’ve been hedging all year, can send you some pics. I think I may have hedged them one too many times though cuz at some point the leaves got a little stunted and yellowed. Yours looks better than mine do now.
@BackGardenBonsai4 жыл бұрын
They are pretty hardcore, both in growth rate and ability to take a kicking. have you got the American sycamore or a good ol' British one? lol. i defo want to see what you've got my man!
@BostonBonsaiIdiot4 жыл бұрын
Back Garden Bonsai I think it’s the British one...it looks just like what you have in the video. No sooner did I send that did I realize that I don’t have any way to send you pics. Do you have an email associated with your KZbin? Do I, for that matter??
