If it had been three and a half years (which they were trying to prove Daniels seven year prophecy of the tribulations had already happened) it gives a lot of silent dead periods where he seems to be doing nothing and not going up to the feasts like every male is commanded to do a few times a year.

John 6:4 was added by Eusebius in Rome to make way for the pope to have his pretend authority over the scriptures and the church. His ministry was one year. From one Passover to the Passover he became the sacrificial lamb.

While there are some who might argue for John 6:4 being an insertion, or even just the word 'passover' being a scribal insertion, most scholars do not see the evidence very convincing. For this reason the vast majority of scholars today suggest about a three-year ministry for Jesus. However, if Jesus had only a one-year ministry rather than three-years, it would not change anything in the way any of us view His Messiahship, nor would it change much in how we read or understand the Gospels.
