Discover the Book of Galatians in a new way with our animated Bible video! Gain a deeper understanding of Galatians through its historical background, and apply its message to your life and Bible study today. Knowing the historical setting of the close yet complex differences between the early Christian community and a group called the Judaizers - specifically on the issue of Gentile conversion - is essential to understanding the message of Galatians. Justification comes through faith in Christ and not through works of the law!
Join us on this journey to better understand the Bible, its history, and its impact on our lives, through understanding both the literary context and historical context. This is an essential part of interpretation in inductive Bible study, and will help you to think biblically and live biblically. Our Bible videos are perfect for all ages and levels of Biblical literacy. Enhance your personal and small group Bible studies with our animated videos.

APPLICATION QUESTIONS: 1) Are there areas in our lives where we compromise and conform our beliefs to the world around us? 2) Are there areas where I feel I must earn my salvation, or righteousness before God? Do I feel that God’s acceptance of me is conditional? 3) What does living in the freedom in Christ (as spoken of in Galatians) look like in our lives today? I've just fully accepted Jesus Christ as my lord and saviour and I'm no longer Luke warm! My next step is to be baptized!! I have the bible but struggle to read it ! I've asked father God in the name of Jesus Christ to help me understand and I think he brought me to this video! So thank you for this! God bless you all.

❤❤The best news we can ever hear is when people fully accept Jesus as Lord and Savior. This brings a smile to my face! We are honored that God would use our videos to help you understand the Bible better. We will continue to release more background videos for each book of the Bible, helping to shed light on their historical context. Meanwhile, the best advice that I can give you is to keep pressing into reading the Bible, and join with a group of Christians who can help you along the way. Blessings James!

Yes but now no more water baptism needed. Upon salvation the holy Spirit baptizes us 🙌
@TheBibleEffect
@TheBibleEffect 3 ай бұрын
@@nancylovelace6544 While the NT does affirm baptism with the Holy Spirit, it is also very clear that water baptism is an important step of obedience to Jesus. It is not only part of Christ's commission to His apostles (Matt 28:19), but we see extensively throughout the book of Acts that every new believer was water-baptized in accordance with Christ's command. Water baptism and its significance is also affirmed in some of the epistles, including in Romans 6:1-12. Paul also speaks of baptism of the Corinthian believers in 1 Corinthians 1:11ff. Because nothing has changed in this regard since the NT church, water baptism is still part of our obedience today.

The intent of Paul’s letter to the Galatians was to provide an understanding of the relationship between, The Law and Grace. Paul attempts to do this through an examination of what it means to accept Christ’s offer of redemption and enter into a New Covenant. However, Paul doesn’t stop there he also provides a thorough examination of the ramifications of returning back to the covenant from which they had been redeemed, whether that covenant was of legalism and The Law of Moses, or a covenant of liberalism and lawlessness. May you be blessed in your pursuit of truth.

This is really good. The question I have outstanding about Galatians regards the Jews in the Galatians churches and whether he was advising them also to not circumcise their children or continue to follow Jewish customs.
@TheBibleEffect
@TheBibleEffect 22 күн бұрын
That is a great question. Paul does not have anything against circumcision as a practice. He even had Timothy circumcised (Acts 16:3). However, he does have a problem when people claim that the act of circumcision is a necessary step of justification before God. Jews are free to continue to observe the practice of circumcision, and the Mosaic laws of kosher diet and the keeping of Sabbath/festivals. However, they must remember that observance of these does not put them (or anyone else) into any position of extra favor with God. I hope that helps!

This is a great question. The Talmud, which was written slightly later than Galatians, but recorded well-established Jewish practices and traditions from before the time of Galatians, speaks of the rites of Proselytes, including baptism (commonly translated as 'ablution'). One such place is in Yebamoth 46 a & b. I hope that helps!

This is such a great and helpful video. Thanks so much for your work! You particularly handle some of the early tension and interplay between Judaism and Christianity well. I have one big caution though. We must be extremely cautious about not painting these tensions as Christian vs. Jewish! Paul still views himself a fully Jewish, his relationship to the law and grace does not replace this. Authors like E. P. Sanders in the 70's shed CRITICALLY important light on centuries of misrepresentation of what the law is to Jews and what that means for our understanding of the book of Galatians. For Paul, proper Jewish adherence to the law was NOT about earning God's grace. Following the law comes out of a faithful response of Holiness and worship in recognition of God's grace which is already present. The problem IS actually following the law as a means of works, but this is anathema to both Christianity AND Judaism according to Paul. It was only a small subset of teachers, who carried a different (Christian) Gospel, this was an early believer problem not a Jewish problem. It's a subtle but crucial difference. Peace, and thanks again for the work.

THERE IS A VERSE ABOUT THE CELEBRATION ABOUT months and festivals about their former celtic/druid religion, the witch craft and idol worship that I wish to see were included. Galatians 4 and 5
@TheBibleEffect
@TheBibleEffect 2 жыл бұрын
I'm guessing that you are referring to Gal 4:10. While there may be some scholars who relate that to their former pagan practices, many scholars see this in light of what Paul is addressing throughout the letter, which is the Jewish laws being imposed on Gentiles by the Judaizers. If that is the case, it would seem that this verse is addressing the practicing of Old Covenant Sabbaths, feasts, and festivals as a rite of holiness. In either case, under the New Covenant we are not made righteous through legalistic observation of 'holy days', rather we are only made righteous through Christ. Blessings!

@@TheBibleEffect Hi Im not sure about that because in GaLATIANS 5:19 IT SAYS: 19 The acts of the flesh are obvious: sexual immorality,(A) impurity and debauchery; 20 idolatry and witchcraft; hatred, discord, jealousy, fits of rage, selfish ambition, dissensions, factions 21 and envy; drunkenness, orgies, and the like.(B) I warn you, as I did before, that those who live like this will not inherit the kingdom of God.(C) I checked the history of Galatians and what they follow. Their religion was Caktic and they practise the Druid custom and Celts. Which are Idol worshipping, Samhain custom, witchcraft, bonfire and orgies. So Galatians 4: 8 onwards don't refer to Sabbaths but the Galatians old ways of worshipping "gods" idols : 8 Formerly, when you did not know God,(N) you were slaves(O) to those who by nature are not gods.(P) 9 But now that you know God-or rather are known by God(Q)-how is it that you are turning back to those weak and miserable forces[d]? Do you wish to be enslaved(R) by them all over again?(S) 10 You are observing special days and months and seasons and years!(T) 11 I fear for you, that somehow I have wasted my efforts on you.(U), Paul said. The Galatians worshipped Phrygian sky god Sabazios and Cybele which is the origin of Mothering Sunday. Anyway, thank yo u so much! God bless! Shalom!

You mean like Revelation 12:17 and 14:12 says "those who keep the commandments and have the testimony of Yeshua" (Jesus) are the remnant. Like even Paul said do we then nullify the law GOD FORBID we uphold the law.... John the writer of Revelation explains in 1 John 3:4 that the definition of sin is transgression of the law. Yeshua said in Matthew 5 "think NOT that I have come to abolish the law.....

You are absolutely right. As Jesus says in Matthew 5 that He has not come to abolish the law, but to fulfill it (5:17). The response of His followers is to be obedience through faith in Christ, as as you referenced in Romans 4:31. As followers of Jesus we no longer have to keep such laws as the ceremonial laws of the Old Covenant. Rather in faith we rely on the atoning sacrifice of Christ for our justification, and seek to walk in full obedience to Him. Blessings!

I'm from Kerala, southern part of India. Can you please advise what Galatians 3:1 talking about. Also in 3:19, it make some confusion.
@TheBibleEffect
@TheBibleEffect 3 жыл бұрын
Good questions Jeswin. I'm guessing in 3:1 you are referring to Paul saying, 'it was before your eyes that Jesus Christ was publicly portrayed as crucified'. Of course, the Galatian Christians (who were mostly Gentile) were not eyewitnesses to the events surrounding the crucifixion of Jesus, so that isn't what Paul would be referring to. Some scholars understand that Paul is saying that he came to them and presented the Gospel message of the cross very clearly to the Galatians. Others understand that Paul is referring to his own sufferings that he endured (such as Acts 14:19-20) as a testimony to the sufferings of Jesus and the power of the Gospel message. When Christ's people suffer, He also suffers (see Acts 9:4). In any case, the main emphasis of Paul is that when he was with them they did clearly have the Truth of the Gospel message displayed to them, and yet are now being deceived, or as he says, 'bewitched'. As for 3:19, Paul is saying that the law was needed because of the sinfulness of mankind. The law did not take away sin, as only Jesus is the one who does that (John 1:29). One of the functions of the law was it showed people how sinful they really are, and their need for God's mercy and a Savior (see Romans 5:19-20). This is similar to what Paul says in Romans 7:7-25. It acted as a guardian, as Paul will begin to talk about in 3:23ff. It functioned in this way until the promised Son (Greek: 'Seed') would come (reference to God's covenant with Abraham in Gen 17:7), who is Jesus. As for the comment that the law was ordained through angels, this is possibly referring to the Jewish belief that God used an angelic mediator to give the law and guide the Israelites, as seems to be suggested by Exodus 23:20 and Stephen's account in Acts 7:53. I hope that helps. Please let me know if you have any other questions. Blessings!

May I offer my understanding in love of this book? Jesus became the high priest upon his resurrection and sits on the right hand of the father interceding on our behalf for all eternity. If this is difficult to understand read the entire book of Hebrews. It explains quite successfully that the old covenant (run by the levitical priesthood had become corrupt) was replaced by a better one and that is the new covenant. I the lord do not change. This means we are still to act in the same behaviors of our creator and his son. Jesus even said himself that he did not come to abolish the law but to fulfill it. If you believe you are not under the law then how will you be judged? If you believe you’re not under the law then do you lie, cheat, steal, commit adultery? Of course not because you’re a Christian! Well then way don’t you do those things because you know they aren’t right. Why? Because of Gods beautiful law! His burden is easy and his yoke is light. Gods law is perfect just like him. His law shows us how fair and compassionate he is towards his creation. Judaism then (as practiced by the Pharisees had a ton of their made up traditions that were never in God’s law) rejected Gods law. That why Jesus wrecked them all the time as being broods of vipers and hypocrites! They still reject his law! Jesus even told them who he was and they killed him for it. But why was Jesus resurrected? Because of Gods law. The wages of sin is death. That is the law. Since Jesus had no sin God had to raise him back to life because he DID NOT DESERVE TO DIE. Gods law is righteous. It can not be overturned. When he returned he went as the eternal high priest that can never be replaced because he was perfect and that’s why he can deliver us from death and raise us back up! It’s awesome how wonderful God is. He knew the end from the beginning. God bless.

Please explain to me what is considered fruitless works or works or doing the works of the law or jewish laws of conversion or circumcision. Do any of these mean sin?
@TheBibleEffect
@TheBibleEffect 9 ай бұрын
Good question, Maria. In the Bible, anything that stems from the works of the flesh is considered fruitless. These works do not produce the fruit that God desires, and thus is considered fruitless. In Galatians 5:16-26, Paul contrasts the desires of the flesh with the desires of the Spirit. He then lists the works of the flesh that result from its desires, which is a list of sins. He holds this in contrast to the fruit that comes from the Spirit beginning in 5:22. In the same way, mere obedience to rituals with the expectation that they produce righteousness is also fruitless, as righteousness is not a fruit (end result) of these works. Paul expands on this in Romans 7, saying that in some cases the law aroused our sinful passions, which bear fruit for death (Rom 7:4-5). This is what Jesus encountered in his visit to the Jerusalem temple in Matthew 21:1-22. Jesus entered Jerusalem and then the temple, but He did not find the fruit that produces righteousness inside. After this he left and cursed the fig tree, as - like the temple - he found no fruit in its branches. He goes on to say that He is looking for people who produce fruits of the kingdom (Matt 21:43). Said another way, Jesus says in John 6:63, "It is the Spirit who gives life; the flesh is no help at all." I hope that helps. Blessings!

Hi Vlind... please understand that the message of Paul was NOT that we are to follow the laws of the Old Covenant, including circumcision and the food laws. His message, and the message of the New Testament is that Jesus has set us free from the burden of following these laws. As followers of Jesus, we are justified through faith in Him, and not in any of these works, as no righteousness is imputed from them. So, what you thought originally with just the one thing (if that one thing is Jesus) was correct.

Great question. Galatia being an area that was composed of different cities, meant that there was likely some diversity in their beliefs before Jesus. However, aside from a small Jewish population that became followers of Jesus, most of the converts were Gentiles. With that, they had belief in Greco-Roman deities as did most of the Roman Empire at the time (Zeus/Jupiter, Hermes/Mercury, Artemis, etc.). Along with this, being in Asia there would have also been influence from Asian Mysticism to some degree as well (see our Colossians video: kzbin.info/www/bejne/n2O4iGlspKd4qaM), though that doesn't seem to have been an influence of concern for Paul in Galatians. I hope that helps. Blessings!

Galatians 4:9 But now, after that ye have known God, or rather are known of God, how turn ye again to the weak and beggarly elements, whereunto ye desire again to be in bondage? How can this verse be speaking of the law, if the gentile converts were never keeping the law? How can they turn back to something they were never keeping?
@TheBibleEffect
@TheBibleEffect 3 жыл бұрын
This is a good question, and one that might become a little clearer when reading one of the more modern translations than the KJV. Paul is not comparing their former lives of living under the law, but is rather comparing their former lives before God, to their new life after God. He is saying that going to a works-based Gospel is going back to a life of bondage, just like the one that they left. I hope that helps! Blessings!

@@TheBibleEffect So you believe he is calling the law weak and beggarly elements, or their former lives, or saying they both are?
@TheBibleEffect
@TheBibleEffect 3 жыл бұрын
@@brandonvonbo9708 Paul never calls the law weak. As he says in Romans 8:3, that the law was weakened by the flesh (i.e. humans). He also says in Romans 7:12 that the law is holy, and in 1 Timothy 1:8 he says that the law is good, if it is used legitimately. However, relying on the law to make one righteous is fruitless, and results in slavery to the law. In the same way, their former lives were spent in slavery, not to the law but to those that by nature are not gods. As for the 'beggarly elements', the Greek remains somewhat unclear, exactly what Paul meant. This could be elemental, as in rudimentary principles (which seems to be the leaning of the ESV), or it could be elemental spirits, as in supernatural forces (which seems to be the leaning of the NRSV). In either case, Paul's message is clear: relying on anything other than Christ to provide righteousness is slavery.
@brandonvonbo9708
@brandonvonbo9708 3 жыл бұрын
@@TheBibleEffect In the Hebrew mindset, slavery was not viewed in the same way as say we would today in America. It was not ideal, but a natural way. Slaves had many rights in the Roman era, they could sue their masters in court. So in Gal 4:1 when the child is like a servant being taught by tutors, is it not the tutors responsibility to teach the child all the proper ways to live before becoming a man and getting his father’s inheritance? Is it not comparing the law as the tutor? When you come of age you are now free to use what you have been taught, hopefully in the manner that honors the father. Does that mean we throw out aspects of the law we don’t like?
@TheBibleEffect
@TheBibleEffect 3 жыл бұрын
@@brandonvonbo9708 The New Testament in no place suggests that we can pick and choose what aspects of the law we don't like, and ignore them. Paul gives a good explanation of this in Romans 3. There he says that in living by faith we don't overthrow the law, but rather 'we uphold the law' (3:31). Christians have some differing views about which laws of the old covenant are still binding on us today, and which ones are not, but no current expressions in the body of Christ would argue that you can pick and choose. Most would agree that moral laws are still binding, while ceremonial laws have been fulfilled by Christ and are not. There are some who would define it further and say that today we are under the Law of Christ (Gal 6:2). They would look at what laws does Christ re-affirm or re-define, and obey those, while viewing the laws that Christ repeals or does not command, as non-binding. In any case, let's not forget Paul's message in Galatians, that we are justified by faith in Christ, and not by works. Blessings!

who do I listen to Jesus or Paul?
@TheBibleEffect
@TheBibleEffect 4 жыл бұрын
This is a good question. It is not a matter of listening to one or the other, as both are in harmony. When Jesus speaks, we are hearing directly from God. The apostles (including Paul) had a special anointing from Jesus to speak on His behalf. When Paul writes, he writes under the divine inspiration and authority of Jesus. In that sense then, we listen to both Jesus and Paul (along with the other New Testament writers), who are in harmony in their message.

@@TheBibleEffect what about Matthew ch. 5; more specifically 5:17-18?
@TheBibleEffect
@TheBibleEffect 4 жыл бұрын
@@walkingtheway3238 This is another good question, and one that many Christians have today as well. In Matthew 5:17, Jesus says that He did not come to abolish the law or the prophets, but he came to fulfill. In other words, He came to fulfill, or complete the requirements of the law. This is also what Paul is saying in Romans 10:4, where he says that "Christ is the end of the law so that there may be righteousness for everyone who believes." The Greek word for 'fulfill' in Matthew 5:17 has a connotation of finishing a task. The Old Covenant law required a continual task, but Jesus put an end to that task, not through abolishing it, but fulfilling/satisfying its requirements. This is what the author of Hebrews (likely not Paul) is also talking about in Hebrews 10:11-18, "And every priest stands day after day at his service, offering again and again the same sacrifices that can never take away sins. But when Christ had offered for all time a single sacrifice for sins, 'he sat down at the right hand of God'... For by a single offering he has perfected for all time those who are sanctified... Where there is forgiveness of these, there is no longer any offering for sin." I hope that helps to answer your question. Blessings!
