As someone who's done winter training in the Norwegian army; there's no exception to the "no sweat" theory. In - 35c when moving we would dress down to just our netting underneath our uniforms. As long as there's no heavy downfall or heavy winds you could basically move around with just your baselayer. Just a tip.

I have spent 5 years over seas -- 3 years in Afghanistan and 2 years in South Sudan Africa -- I was honestly BURNED OUT of " "ROUGHING IT" But in the last few days I have watched you and others camping and I am regained some motivation to plan a trip. The bad thing for me is I cant simply just go hiking up a mountain -- I live in Indiana and where I live I will have to take a day trip of driving to get to a decent location to start my trek. Love watching -- thanks for sharing.

I definitely believe that, if you go out into a blizzard and it being so cold you should have good skills in knowing what your doing. I think it also goes for camping in extreme heat.

At first I thought rocks in lieu of pegs wouldn’t work in that wind. Obviously worked well, and with all that ice and snow the next morning, handling rocks would be preferable to handling pegs!! Great idea!

Fun video. Great quality editing and filming. Small Note: The eating snow aspect; the reason people say you should not is for 2 reasons 1) older snow can carry bacteria (new snow is generally okay) and 2) it will harm your mouth *over extended use*, you can't live off it long term (for a water supply), it will *eventually* cause damage. But its okay for use now and then. Also... don't eat it when trying to stay warm, it will lower your core temp. But its great for hiking and work. - I live and work outside in Northern Canada.

You have a warm, likeable personality, intelligent sensibility, down to earth good common sense and a clean sense of humor. Just wanted to tell you, how you are helping people know how to have a safe and good outdoor experience. Thanks, Strength & Honor!

It’s important to know the limits of your gear. Many companies “fib” or stretch the truth of their claims. Not knowing your physical limits or your gear limits can result in injury or a life threatening situation.

Nothing to do but relax and eat and maybe a nice nap..:)...At least I would..I'm older and love naps...!!!..Also lower profile 3 or 4 season tents can withstand almost any weather..I toured out west for 35 years on motorcycles and camped out 95% of the time..I have seen it all weather wise..The main thing I learned is to stay dry and pack plenty of food..That way if you get stuck somewhere you can manage..Sometimes i would camp up at mountain passes and this was well before cell phones so sometimes you would get stuck in a storm for a day or two..I accepted everything Mother Nature through at me and never had an issue..I loved every minute of those challenges..:).

Me and two of my buddies used to go up to the Adirondacks High Peaks in Keene Vally NY every winter to ice climb. We'd camp out, MH Trango 2 tents, -20 bags, double pads and Lowe Alpine Contour 4 packs in sleds and Lowe Alpine Alpine Attack 60 packs on our backs. We'd go up and in for a week to ten days. Some of the best times I've ever had. Nights dipped down to -15 but we were ready and comfortable. We're talking double plastic boots, crampons or snow shoes, three layer Gortex or Triple Point Ceramic jackets and pants plus Patagonia Capaliene or Reactor base and mid layers. We loved it. I miss it now but I'm 63 and know better than to try and push the envelope anymore.

Luke, I'm an old hand at camping in New England. In my youth I've been out in some truly nasty storms. (I'm heading back up there in a couple of years.) That being said, a couple of recommendations. Wear some Sunglasses. Wrap arounds are better but anything is better than nothing. Not only do they keep the snow out of your Eyes but they cut down on Snow Glare. (No you don't need Snow Goggles.) Spikes for the Boots, They don't cost much and they will save your butt. Trekking Poles or a Walking Stick. The Stove is great even though I prefer the "Old School Svea 123". Make sure you have enough Fuel. Food, the Freeze Dried Foods are great but pack along something else. Tuna in Oil is Great as is Bully Beef or Tinned Corned Beef. (All are high in Fat so great for emergency Foods.) Anything high in Fat is great for Cold Weather. The Camp Site. Man did that look nice but I would have set up somewhere below the Wood Line. There I would have been able to get a Fire Going as well as being out of the worst of the Wind. Then again that's just me and my approach to Camping. Ed

We had issued to us as part of our winter gear in the Canadian Armed Forces, good quality ski masks. Essential for any winter outdoors work, as they keep your eyes warm in temps below -20c, free from being pelted with snow and ice, and with interchangeable lenses you prevent snow blindness. You should seriously consider a pair for winter camping. Snow blindness is a serious issue, and it can strike so fast you would be amazed. Secondly, we were also issued slip on spikes for our boots. You can buy a pair for under $40.00 from nearly all outdoors suppliers or from Amazon. Very lite, they pack small, and when on an ice laced trail, they will work wonders. Again, you should consider a pair. Heck, you could get several and do a comparison!

Loved your video Luke . I can tell you what a nice feeling hearing that wind and snow outside and being all nice and comfy inside . I just love it. Great tent . As for the snow after being in the forces I was letter carrier for 35 yrs . Out here in Canada I really hated Fall rain that froze your hands . Or freezing ... rain Not much you can do with rain except wool or polar fleece gloves/ mits still helped a bit even wet. Now for the snow walking for miles in knee high at sometimes -40c was a killer. No one was out... not even dogs running trying to bite your ass . After work sometimes you just lied down in bed completely drained. You didn't even feel like having something to eat. Now for the podcast you must listen to The Liviathan chronicles . You will be hooked. Let me know if you like it too . Thanks for the adventure : )

hi luke, love the vids... a trick i use while hiking in cold weather, in to wear my shell directly over my skin, keeps the wind off, and you vent as needed to evaporate the moisture. the sweat and body oils don't foul your absorbent layers. at camp, i simply add under layers as i cool down. ps, you can add a fleece over your shell for extra warmth if needed. again it wont be absorbing sweat. rob

I have a small, 10 acre plot @ 7500' in the southern region of the Sangre de Cristos. A walking stick & crampons "Make Sense" ......in terrain such as you find yourself, Luke. I love your vids, sense of adventure, and positive take in general! I'm closer to 70 than I am to 60, so priorities and abilities have changed but my love for winter camping never will.

The closer to a road you are, the more likely that the campsite will be used for people out to party more than backpackers.

If you're not going to pack out someone else's beer cans, don't burn them. That way someone else can pack it out. The Forestry and National Park services don't want trash being left or burned. Campsites accessible by vehicle tend to be the trashiest which is ironic in that it's easier to pack your trash out when your vehicle is there.

Most trips of only a night or two, I bring a trash bag and pack out as much as I feel like carrying. The trails need as many volunteers as they can get. And the lids on cans operate in both directions.

This is right now my favorite episode. For a couple of reasons. One, the music almost sounds like the guitar riffs on this rock song. It would be nice if I knew the title lol. All I know is that superman is in the verse. Number 2 is because of nor only the conditions and scenery which was just gorgeous with the snow but Luke's joyful. excited, happy demeanor was so infectious. This was a great video. Absolutely gorgeous. Also, it was pretty cool that those people recognized him. It was probably a really cool experience for him.

I had 2 trips to Yosemite as a kid One time it rained and the other was in the snow. No back packing no camping ever again until I was 30. I hiked into Big Sur solo with all brand new cheap gear that must have weighed 55 lbs for an overnighter in the summer. I was in good shape and made over the multiple climbs and made 9 miles. I was so blown away by the riparian corridor, redwoods and steep cliffs I have been doing ever since.

Winter camping is my favorite. Love it! My last camping trip was a winter trip near Copper Harbor in the UP. -10f highs, -20f lows. It's all about being prepared. Sleep system, layering, and a shelter you can count on (Hilleberg, Exped, etc). Trekking poles are great for the slippery trails. Just sayin'.

Luke would love to hear more stories of how you learned how to survive in blizzards and especially some of the things that went wrong!! For educational purposes of course. You always learn lessons when things go wrong.

Myself and a friend were out on a 4wheel drive / camping trip, we left late at night by time we got to the mountain we found ourselves in the clouds could barley see a few feet in front of us but rolling slow we managed to make it to a roadside Ranger station, mother nature was calling, stepped out of the truck stepped a few feet away answer the call of nature spun around and realized we couldn't find the truck, it was one of those moments of stick your arms out in front of you and walk slowly forward till you hit something, took us an hour but we finally found the truck and back on our way we went, by the time we hit the first camp site on the trail we shut it down and was done until sunup. We were probably never farther then just a few feet away from the truck the whole time we couldn't find the truck, that's how easy it is to become lost in the clouds in the mountains.
