As someone who's done winter training in the Norwegian army; there's no exception to the "no sweat" theory. In - 35c when moving we would dress down to just our netting underneath our uniforms. As long as there's no heavy downfall or heavy winds you could basically move around with just your baselayer. Just a tip.

I have spent 5 years over seas -- 3 years in Afghanistan and 2 years in South Sudan Africa -- I was honestly BURNED OUT of " "ROUGHING IT" But in the last few days I have watched you and others camping and I am regained some motivation to plan a trip. The bad thing for me is I cant simply just go hiking up a mountain -- I live in Indiana and where I live I will have to take a day trip of driving to get to a decent location to start my trek. Love watching -- thanks for sharing.

Hello, Luke! I enjoy watching TOGR. You’re knowledge is wisdom . You’re the real deal. You and your wife, Susie, are not just “fair weather outdoor enthusiasts”. That is what I first noticed. You have a warm, likeable personality, intelligent sensibility, down to earth good common sense and a clean sense of humor. Just wanted to tell you, how you are helping people know how to have a safe and good outdoor experience. Thanks, Strength & Honor!

Nothing to do but relax and eat and maybe a nice nap..:)...At least I would..I'm older and love naps...!!!..Also lower profile 3 or 4 season tents can withstand almost any weather..I toured out west for 35 years on motorcycles and camped out 95% of the time..I have seen it all weather wise..The main thing I learned is to stay dry and pack plenty of food..That way if you get stuck somewhere you can manage..Sometimes i would camp up at mountain passes and this was well before cell phones so sometimes you would get stuck in a storm for a day or two..I accepted everything Mother Nature through at me and never had an issue..I loved every minute of those challenges..:).

Fun video. Great quality editing and filming. Small Note: The eating snow aspect; the reason people say you should not is for 2 reasons 1) older snow can carry bacteria (new snow is generally okay) and 2) it will harm your mouth *over extended use*, you can't live off it long term (for a water supply), it will *eventually* cause damage. But its okay for use now and then. Also... don't eat it when trying to stay warm, it will lower your core temp. But its great for hiking and work. - I live and work outside in Northern Canada.

Me and two of my buddies used to go up to the Adirondacks High Peaks in Keene Vally NY every winter to ice climb. We'd camp out, MH Trango 2 tents, -20 bags, double pads and Lowe Alpine Contour 4 packs in sleds and Lowe Alpine Alpine Attack 60 packs on our backs. We'd go up and in for a week to ten days. Some of the best times I've ever had. Nights dipped down to -15 but we were ready and comfortable. We're talking double plastic boots, crampons or snow shoes, three layer Gortex or Triple Point Ceramic jackets and pants plus Patagonia Capaliene or Reactor base and mid layers. We loved it. I miss it now but I'm 63 and know better than to try and push the envelope anymore.

Loved your video Luke . I can tell you what a nice feeling hearing that wind and snow outside and being all nice and comfy inside . I just love it. Great tent . As for the snow after being in the forces I was letter carrier for 35 yrs . Out here in Canada I really hated Fall rain that froze your hands . Or freezing ... rain Not much you can do with rain except wool or polar fleece gloves/ mits still helped a bit even wet. Now for the snow walking for miles in knee high at sometimes -40c was a killer. No one was out... not even dogs running trying to bite your ass . After work sometimes you just lied down in bed completely drained. You didn't even feel like having something to eat. Now for the podcast you must listen to The Liviathan chronicles . You will be hooked. Let me know if you like it too . Thanks for the adventure : )

We had issued to us as part of our winter gear in the Canadian Armed Forces, good quality ski masks. Essential for any winter outdoors work, as they keep your eyes warm in temps below -20c, free from being pelted with snow and ice, and with interchangeable lenses you prevent snow blindness. You should seriously consider a pair for winter camping. Snow blindness is a serious issue, and it can strike so fast you would be amazed. Secondly, we were also issued slip on spikes for our boots. You can buy a pair for under $40.00 from nearly all outdoors suppliers or from Amazon. Very lite, they pack small, and when on an ice laced trail, they will work wonders. Again, you should consider a pair. Heck, you could get several and do a comparison!

To prevent that danger that you speak of of freezing to death from an injury such as a broken or sprained ankle, because of hiking in snow covered rocks boulders and roots one might use micro spikes to prevent this from happening. It will make walking through snow and ice much faster and safer

Luke, I'm an old hand at camping in New England. In my youth I've been out in some truly nasty storms. (I'm heading back up there in a couple of years.) That being said, a couple of recommendations. Wear some Sunglasses. Wrap arounds are better but anything is better than nothing. Not only do they keep the snow out of your Eyes but they cut down on Snow Glare. (No you don't need Snow Goggles.) Spikes for the Boots, They don't cost much and they will save your butt. Trekking Poles or a Walking Stick. The Stove is great even though I prefer the "Old School Svea 123". Make sure you have enough Fuel. Food, the Freeze Dried Foods are great but pack along something else. Tuna in Oil is Great as is Bully Beef or Tinned Corned Beef. (All are high in Fat so great for emergency Foods.) Anything high in Fat is great for Cold Weather. The Camp Site. Man did that look nice but I would have set up somewhere below the Wood Line. There I would have been able to get a Fire Going as well as being out of the worst of the Wind. Then again that's just me and my approach to Camping. Ed

My grandsons want to camp also so I have gotten them to watching your channel to learn all they can . Our first time out will be in about a month. I am going to break them in easy as we are going to camp in the yard of my lake cabin and fish during the day. I am getting some Mountain House meals and even though we may have a campfire they are going to learn to boil water over a little Solo Titan twig stove. It may not be quite as adventurous as what you do but it is a start and if I can instill in them a love for the out doors then one day they can tell me about the adventures they go on. Thanks again Luke.

Winter camping is my favorite. Love it! My last camping trip was a winter trip near Copper Harbor in the UP. -10f highs, -20f lows. It's all about being prepared. Sleep system, layering, and a shelter you can count on (Hilleberg, Exped, etc). Trekking poles are great for the slippery trails. Just sayin'.
