Backpacking the Buffalo River Trail: Part One - Big Hills and Big Bluff

On April 12-16 I hiked the 37 mile long Buffalo River Trail spanning from Boxley (Highway 21) to Pruitt (Highway 7) at Buffalo National River in Newton County, Arkansas. The hike is challenging, going thru rough, rocky terrain and up several sizable hills. This was my third time hiking the trail tho and for the most park knew what to expect.
This video is for the first two days of the hike where I go from Boxley to the Slatey Place (just a few miles before Kyle's Landing). I hope you enjoy the watching the trail as it goes through some of the highlights of the Ponca Wilderness of the Buffalo River.

I love that trail, it's the first backpacking trip I ever did and I ended up hiking it a couple more times before leaving the Ozarks. I miss the Buffalo River, especially this time of year

It's definitely convenient and somewhat comfortable. While I often try to camp in areas with fire rings or rock chairs like that I don't build them myself and discourage other hikers from building them as well as they are not Leave No Trace. Thanks for watching!

Wow thanks!!! When i was artist in residence at BNR fall '99 it was there in a horse ranch house the park owned that i stayed, just out of sight in the foreground from your high view of the valley.. The husband and wife park rangers lived in the other house there Stewart West was amazing photographer and ranger! There used to be a pay phone in the middle of the that lawn lol.. Every day i hiked a different direction from that valley but found main trails i mostly relied on and deer trails i got to know.. The sunset magic hour made the bluffs look like ghosts.. Milky way was so intense there.. Love it!!!

I plan on hiking from steel creek to Kyle’s landing here soon, how long would you estimate that to take

Depends how fast you want to hike. It can be done in a day or as an easy overnight hike if you want to camp. Trails usually get a bit more overgrown come May, we don't live in the Ozarks anymore so I don't know the conditions but ticks will definitely be out so check often.
